Regulator drops requirement for social workers to report gender identity

Social Work England will instead ask practitioners to voluntarily provide details of their sex and whether they have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment

The changes come into force on 1 September 2025, alongside another change to Social Work England’s registration rules that will tighten up English language requirements for practitioners applying to register from overseas.

The decision follows a consultation on the two measures earlier this year, which received 58 responses.

It sounds as though they're swapping a woolly notion for accurate information which is needed in such an important profession.

I wasn't sure when I posted this whether this is new, or has only just been made public.

But seems a small step in the right direction.
