Growing up by the seaside, there were several lovely looking convalescent homes, some on the seafront and others set in beautiful grounds. I’ve no idea how they were funded, from the age of the buildings most would have been prewar and only for the more affluent invalids I suppose. After a dear friend of the family, an unmarried URC minister, had an operation, she recovered in one of the remaining homes which was attached to a convent, staffed by kindly nuns.

I'm sure we already have a San, I remember checking in early spring to my hermetically sealed, definitely no pollen ever, room.

I think it should be next to the snug. On the side nearer the toilets, I think. That has a lovely view of the meadow, the woods on the flanks of Peak Woo and the stream. The invalid can shuffle into the snug if they feel strong enough (the dress code is very relaxed, no problem with dressing gown and slippers) or, when the weather improves, they can sit outside. Either out in the sun or under the willow trees by the stream. There are tribbles cushions, steamer chairs, even hammocks. The cats will pop by. They're always happy to curl up with someone who's running a temperature. Obviously, we know several of the quokkas have a copious dressing up box some sort of medical training, the gerbil pharmacy is nearby or you can chew on some willow twigs. I think the hospitality gerbils that work in the snug would be gagging to delighted to stretch their attentive, but discrete, services to a nearby area.

I assume the Staunch Ally also has some sort of rehab facilities, I could do with booking DH in for appropriate care and physio, his back problem hasn’t resolved yet though it’s a bit better. He had a phone physio assessment this morning, they should be arranging some hands on sessions for him.

A friend just sent me this - knitting is good for the brain.

www.nationalgeographic.com/health/article/grannycore-knitting-hobbies-brain-health

That's really interesting, Deano. I've always been impressed by the incredible range of skills needed to knit, and more importantly the integration of them all - learning the code used in patterns, working out the pattern, learning the stitches, having the dexterity to do the stitches, having the patience to stick at it - a whole universe of skills, both mental and physical.

So it's nice to see there's science behind it!

When I see children's shoes with their velcro touch-fastening, I know they are very convenient and all that, but the tying of shoelaces is such a complex brain/hand/eye task that I'm sure has a value beyond just keeping your shoes from falling off, I'm sure it stimulates and develops parts of the brain that a velcro touch-fastener doesn't.

Imagine writing a programme to teach a robot how to tie a shoelace!
I wonder how well a robot could learn by observing a human tying a shoelace, and would it be quicker to use code....🤔

The Staunch Ally is packed with the most gorgeous young physios. I've tried to get in there, but they won't give me an appointment. Looks like Mr Dragon got one, though. Life's so unfair.

Hopefully they also run clinics at the Lux Inn.

After lengthy discussions with ChatGPT and verifying the information, it seems I am a victim of different kinds of pain which cannot be resolved except through patience.

The deep bone pain of the surgery is actually reasonably well-managed with OTC cocodamol and the walking boot. It doesn't hurt to be on crutches and the ankle is mostly fine.

However, I have significant bruising, particularly on the top of the foot, caused by the incisions and soft tissue damage that comes with surgery in general and this particular operation. This is usually managed by NSAIDs like ibuprofen which will significantly reduce the swelling. Unfortunately the swelling is necessary to get the fusion to take, and I am not allowed to take NSAIDs for 6-8 weeks.

This explains why I'm in a lot of pain that I wouldn't usually have - when I broke my leg/ankle, I was on ibuprofen as well.

The only cure is time and rest, but knowing that I'm not going mad and that the pain would usually be managed is sort of helpful, even if it's not helping the pain.

MarieDeGournay · 19/08/2025 17:49

It's just occurred to me that as far as I can see it's been a while since Inkymoose popped in to the Bluestocking - am I right? You haven't namechanged or anything, have you Moose? All OK?

Patience, time and rest? That's pretty frustrating.

I know what you mean about knowing what to expect makes it a bit better but ugh the tedium of having to be patient. I hope you have lots of trashy distractions to help you through it.

Magpiecomplex · 19/08/2025 17:58

That's sort-of good news Myrtle, and it always helps to just know what's happening.

I've seen Inky on the Woolly Hugs thread, so she's still around. Maybe she's spending a few days on the wagon - even though the Stocking alcohol is hangover-proof and thoroughly wholesome.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2025 18:01

@MyrtleLionFlowers sorry about the pain, but yes if you know there’s a reason and it’s related to the necessary healing process it makes sense that would help a bit.

Me too! In fact it was a bit of a disappointment that it was only half of her babies' grape not all of it - wait, what? her babies only have one grape between them?

I didn't read it, so I don't know if the chihuahua [I don't think I've ever written that word before, thought I have been to the Chihuahua Desert - so called, I assume, because there aren't, as I observed, any chihuahuas there😁] only ate half because it was being nice and sharing, or because the poster intervened with a rolled-up newspaper or a frying-pan or something....

pain is the pits.

I have found Arnica works well for the bruising. I've also found rubbing in tiger balm helps alleviate the pain around the bruising as well.

@MyrtleLion , time and rest. Was that explained to you properly, before you had to resort to the t'tinternet for help? I guess not.

Nonetheless, I hope it helps to have a proper explanation of what's going on - especially as you'll have to spend so much time now just sitting and looking at your damaged lower portion.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/08/2025 19:01

@MyrtleLion - would a TENS machine help? Maybe you could hire one.
