Father Christmas is actually 6.2cm in his boots and hat! So... there might be a population of suitably sized women in white maxi dresses, who could be persuaded to dump their companions and quit cakedom for the Grand Opening.

MarieDeGournay · 18/08/2025 21:35

I don't know where to turn! On the one hand - the poems of Patrick Kavanagh. On the other hand - scale model humans....😕
And if I had a third hand, I'd be extending it in greeting to TropaeolumAreTremendous is new to the Bluestocking - I'm sure I'd have remembered that name if you'd been here before! So welcome, make yourself at home and order the tipple of your choice from a passing gerbilSmile
Unless you're a namechanger in which case - hello again, and you'll already know the gerbil drill.

As far as making little figures is concerned - although I made lots of miniature furniture for the Bluestocking, I know I could never make figures realistic enough to stand beside the commercially-produced ones I already have.
Your Father Christmas makes me think that I should look at cake-topper figures as a possibility..
Thank you for looking for them - Android too - isn't it shocking how pornographic representations of women are just the norm in the miniature world, at every scale, right up to Action Man size, and they are toys. I had the misfortune to look for clothes for female action figures [to go with a model motorbike] and found more 1:6 scale sexy lingerie than anything else😡
Some men are very very weird...

Patrick Kavanagh deserves a post of his ownSmile

@ifIwerenotanandroid are you my DH? He won't use a smart phone - only has a flip phone - for exactly the sausage-finger reason.

There are so few things we can be certain of; but I'm certain I'm not your DH.😜

DeanElderberry · 18/08/2025 21:50

I think we had a poster called 'nasturtiums are under rated' or some such very correct sentiment and observation and suspect there may be a connection. Either that or lots of people appreciate colourful, sweet scented, edible and undemanding flowers.

BeLemonNow · 18/08/2025 21:58

Monet loved nasturtiums

MarieDeGournay · 18/08/2025 22:01

We are so lucky to have had both Heaney and Kavanagh in living memory - modern poetry loved by ordinary people, and in the case of Heaney, a poet loved by the people. Kavanagh on the other hand was a curmudgeonly oul fella, and finding such tenderness in poems like this one is like finding a diamond in a bogSmile
In Memory of my Mother
I do not think of you lying in the wet clay
Of a Monaghan graveyard; I see
You walking down a lane among the poplars
On your way to the station, or happily

Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday -
You meet me and you say:
‘Don’t forget to see about the cattle - ’
Among your earthiest words the angels stray.

And I think of you walking along a headland
Of green oats in June,
So full of repose, so rich with life -
And I see us meeting at the end of a town

On a fair day by accident, after
The bargains are all made and we can walk
Together through the shops and stalls and markets
Free in the oriental streets of thought.

O you are not lying in the wet clay,
For it is a harvest evening now and we
Are piling up the ricks against the moonlight
And you smile up at us - eternally.

Sitting at the end of the bar for a while, listening to the chat feeling my whit has left me

depressed for some unknown reason.

Magpiecomplex · 18/08/2025 22:10

@MarieDeGournay I had to study Heaney (repeatedly , and it always seemed to be the same poems) at school and I'm afraid that permanently removed any ability to appreciate his work. The only good thing I can say about it is that it's considerably less depressing than Thomas Hardy's poetry.

There isn't always a reason. Sometimes you are just sad. You have to either embrace it and watch a really sad film or try and shake it off. At this point though I'd say a cup of tea and then to bed in the hope you wake up in a better mood tomorrow.

Bannedontherun · 18/08/2025 22:49

Just realised ‘twas the day 10 years ago. i walked away from my job in the women's right sector, as I could not take the sucking up to the patriarchy for one more moment.

I was a whistle blower

I wont go in to any detail but the laugh a minute was i looked for a lawyer and was referred to an employment solicitor called Julia who was a bloke in a dress.

😯

MarieDeGournay · 18/08/2025 22:51

Sorry you are feeling sad, Banned - where these shadows come from, we don't always know. We also don't know when they'll leave, but they do leave, and I hope they leave you very soon and tomorrow feels brighterSmile

I've been looking online for 1:43 [that is the scale of the figures I already have] figures, and in the midst of the gravity-defying norkage and sacro-iliac-endangering leg positions, look what I found- isn't it sweet? I don't care if it's not exactly the right size, I love it anyway so I've ordered it.

It seems to be taking ages for the photo to appear - is it guilt by association, I wonder, given the style of most of the others in the collection??😁

I should be a much bigger fan of Heaney than I actually am. I couldn't quite get round to his rendering of Beowulf after Private Eye did Eminem's Beowulf:

Big fuckin monster givin everybody shit
Along come Beowulf and he ain't takin it

Which I think the Anglo-Saxons would have liked.

But when I feel the need for a poem to lift my spirits, I often return to the Bard of Bangor:

I'm glad you like it too - I love the way the child is squirming away from Mam's kiss, but also smiling so happily at being kissed by MamSmile

I'm determined to get offline before midnight, so it's goodnight from me.
