This is brilliant news.

Well done Sarah x

IwantToRetire · 28/07/2025 17:06

I was so excited by the thread title that I didn't read the sub stack.

So this in fact is a double win.

Not only has "sarah" been acknowledged as having had her right to single sex services not met, but she has worked with the SN so that they will now provide a single sex service in the future.

And double respect for doing this whilst being messed around by the legal system.

Flowers Flowers

The survivors network X account has been deleted today for an unknown reason and as such hasn't uploaded the joint statement. I wonder why🤔

Probably knowing they will be bombarded by the TRAs as being traitors and making TW the real victims.

IwantToRetire · 28/07/2025 17:14

Well as most people aren't on X they will have looked for information at SN web site.

They certainly aren't presenting it as a win for single sex services.

This is all about a trans inclusive service, very kindly condescending to create a little niche service

Great news for Sarah and for the women of Brighton. Well done Sarah- you have been incredibly brave and resilient. I hope you have a nice holiday or rest planned now!

Interesting additional statements on the Survivors Network website- looks like it was posted today. This phrase stood out:

Had this proceeded to court, the outcome could have threatened services for all the survivors we collectively support.’

Is it me, or does this sound a bit like ‘we didn’t want to have to do this but we had no choice’?

They also describe it as a ‘pilot scheme’.

Ah, crossed posts @IwantToRetire!

No worries. I was taken aback by their tone.

So even more respect for Sarah for working with them, for the benefit for other women.

TinselAngel · 28/07/2025 17:37

I’m confused as to what has been achieved here. One service in one place has been persuaded to reluctantly provide a single sex service (but still excluding trans identifying females) alongside its gendery ones, and it’s deliberately avoided going to court in case a precedent was set? I thought Sarah said here that the plan was that Survivors Network would refuse to run the service and that then another (presumably terfy) organisation would step in. I’m not sure how this is of benefit to women outside Brighton, or where all the money raised for the court case will go?

Hasn't it enshrined a single sex service as a reluctant add on alongside mixed sex provision?

DuchessofReality · 28/07/2025 17:42

I am utterly delighted about this. I agree that the statement is a lot more grudging than I would expect though. What happens at the end of the 12 month ‘pilot’?

QuornPlaster · 28/07/2025 17:44

What a mealy mouthed, obfuscating piece of prose. Let me translate.

”we have to (by law) have a biological women’s service & we’re pissed off about it. So, we’re not going to call it a women only service. We’ll call it anything but, because we don’t believe in biological women having any right to single sex provision.”

We’re an add on with no name. The very least they can get away with. An addendum. Footnote.

in a time of crisis, it’s not clear I’d be welcomed.

i wish Sarah the very best of luck in that hostile environment.

They say there’s no demand for it?

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 28/07/2025 17:51

Absolutely fantastic for Sarah!

I bet that stuck in SNs craw, having to issue that statement. Wonder how much gnashing of teeth and mad angry cries that has elicited? I wonder what their thoughts will be once women flock to the single sex provision and it's tumbleweed city at the other?

Because this is about how one woman has coped with what happened to her.

The fact that she hasn't had to go to court and has got, which as far as I know that area hasn't had for some years, a single sex service is totally brilliant.

If you think there should be national campaign put your self forward and start organising.

What a mean spiritied and negative response to the bravery of one woman.

Well, as it hasn't gone to court, I don't think it's enshrined anything, which is a good thing.
Good point about the money though; was money needed for the process of reaching a settlement? (excuse my ignorance but I don't know what that might be).

Faffertea · 28/07/2025 18:06

So pleased to read this!
An incredible achievement @iamsarah . You should never have had to fight for this but there will be many women in your area who are grateful you did.

ParmaVioletTea · 28/07/2025 18:10

Absolutely BRILLIANT news!

IwantToRetire · 28/07/2025 18:12

Honestly - talk about shit stirring.

You know perfectly well because Sarah has posted on FWR about how much legal work and time delaying has cost.

And those who gave moeny obviously thought it worth while.

And if you dont think it is a good use of money, as I said up thread, start your own campaign and give those who give money the opportunity to give to you.

No wonder Sarah hasn't come back to post on FWR with such snarky comments.

FayeRC · 28/07/2025 18:12

Amazing work @iamsarah I'm so pleased for this outcome and it has been a long journey for you. Thank you for taking this on, you were actually the only other case I knew about at the time.

Hasn’t the Supreme Court judgement done that job for us?

I cant believe you think that.

But am not going to let this celebratory thread be hijacked by someone's failure to understand the impact of the Supreme Court ruling.

There are multiple threads were you can go and read up on this.

Sorry for the derail Sarah. You have been brilliant.

You'd think so but in reality many employers and service providers now wait for the EHRC guidance, completely unnecessarily, given the SC ruling (or Eq Act since 2010!)

WarrenTofficier · 28/07/2025 18:21

Excellent news, well done Sarah. I'm so sorry that you had to go this far to get the service that you entitled to.

No they can run any service they want. They just cant run a service and say it is women only and include trans women.

The court ruling was in relation to the use of the work sex in the Equality Act.

Basically the ruling just says false advertising is not legal.

The crowdfunder site hasn't been updated yet, I'm sure it will!

She wasn't far off the court date so I expect a lot of the money has been paid to her legal team already. I may be misremembering but I think the crowdfunder site only allows money to go directly to her legal team and any leftovers have to be allocated to other legal cases on the same site.

Otherwise her own crowdfunder says "If I am awarded any compensation, I will donate it to a VAWG charity that supports single sex spaces. To me this case is about protecting women’s rights to safe spaces."
