I never got the point of an honorary doctorate what's the point in accepting something you did no work for

NeverOneBiscuit · 21/07/2025 23:14

Seems about right, a man who pretends to be a woman receives a pretend educational award. Now he can presumably also identify as a doctor. His high heels must have been trembling with the validation.

Crouton19 · 21/07/2025 23:16

Hmm, some FFS going on there.

Enough4me · 21/07/2025 23:19

Wolf in sheep's clothes is awarded fake award to celebrate his fakery.

NPET · 22/07/2025 00:06

I suppose referring to him as an actor & comedian is fair enough as long as we take the whole thing as a comic act. And at least they didn't call him an actress.

MarieDeGournay · 22/07/2025 00:22

I'd forgotten about Sussex Uni and their big fine - they were kicking up a fuss about it, but they seem to have gone quiet.
Did they just pay up and look cheerful in the end?

AnSolas · 22/07/2025 07:46

If they were clever and did the maths i expect they will pay.

Unless the Regulator was careless the basis it the fine would be rock solid. The first "big ticket" action is always likely to be challanged so should be stress tested on the basis of it going legal. The whine about how much was left out of the final report can be read as the Regulator opted to fine on this basis. (If not an new management team are needed.)

But O My Word the Uni Industry will have a collective heart attack when regulation rolls down to them on a personal level. Because that is where all of that is heading.

I've noticed that these days the only members of the acting profession who refer to themselves as actresses are those born male who now call themselves women.

The actual females now seem to always refer to themselves as actors, along with their male counterparts 🤷🏼‍♀️

BloominNora · 22/07/2025 08:16

Kind of ironic that they are accepting and award for all of those things under the name Suzy when they were all done under the name Eddie.

There is only one IMDB credit as Suzy and in a recent tour all the publicity was as Eddie.

Seems there's still more than a little 'boy mode' / 'girl mode' game playing going on.

I used to really like him but now he's just bleurggh

ErrolTheDragon · 22/07/2025 08:23

He’d already been given a few honorary doctorates over the years.🤷‍♀️

Eddie might have a few honorary doctorates but perhaps this is Suzy’s first?

J K Rowling received an Honorary Doctorate from St Andrews. Honorary Doctorates can bring many benefits to a university such as drawing in additional funding. If Sussex have strange choices, I consider they have thought about it and decided Izzard fits some criteria,

Arguing about every single thing involving someone who is trans, is not a good look for us. Let them get on with it. It's no biggie

I would imagine therefore that "he" would call "himself" an actress. All the better therefore that they don't!

I presume JKR received her Honorary Doctorate as... JKR, same as she's always been, and as a woman, which she has always been. So nothing to see there...

But there are two things that make Izzard's doctorate comment-worthy - not a 'biggie', but comment-worthy:

  1. that he is presenting as a woman although he is a man
  2. that it is Sussex Uni, which got into lots of trouble for their unfairly pro-trans policies and practices.
Enough4me · 22/07/2025 23:22

I wonder how much pressure actors are under to conform to remain popular?
It could explain why he went from a non conforming funny man, to the man we see today on the gender bandwagon.
He can jump off and admit he's male whenever he wishes so it's win-win kerching!

Excellent summary

What’s in the water at the university of Sussex?
