Bristol council on its ongoing mission to fuck over women

“Bristol City Council is committed to providing and promoting inclusive services for everyone in Bristol, including trans and gender-diverse people.
“Our ambition is to create a fair, safe, accessible and inclusive city where everyone feels they belong and has a voice and an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive.”
however everyone having a voice clearly doesn’t include women as some cllrs walked out when Wendy Stephenson said: “I present this statement on the third anniversary of a silver motion that stated the council resolves to recognise that trans men are men and trans women are women.
“Following the Supreme Court judgement, the council must withdraw the motion and its trans-inclusion and gender identity policy.
“The negative impact of the council’s position has been felt by women across Bristol”

unfortunately given that it’s Bristol, the Brighton of the south west, I’m not remotely surprised

Politicians walk out of meeting as pleas made for council to reverse support for trans people

Identify as living in Bristol, they love to wang on about how inclusive they are so surely they must be inclusive of transresidents?

Love it!

Well if you've walked out of the room presumably you no longer get to participate in the vote. So good?

I’m going to bang my local drum - Brighton is the instigator and patient zero of all this.

Or "Mordor" as it is sometimes known.

Yes, and it has been that way, along with East Sussex and, for some reason, Gloucestershire, since at least 2000.

The Government place great faith in their guidance which was issued in 2000 to allay concerns about the repeal of Section 28. Having read the guidance, there is much which is ambiguous and unclear.

David Blunkett was Secretary of State at the time of the last debate on Section 28. There was particular concern around that time about a resource entitled, Beyond A Phase, produced by Avon Health Promotion Service, an NHS body. In January 2000, this hit the headlines. The Sunday Times carried a full-page spread about this teachers' pack and video and widespread coverage followed, including ITV's "Tonight with Trevor McDonald".

Of particular concern was the advice from one contributor—Karl—to the video, that children should, Try experimenting with other boys and girls and see who you feel most comfortable with". David Blunkett said on the BBC that this particular resource was inappropriate for schools. He proposed tightening up the law to address the issue of health authority materials. Yet, over two years after his guidance, Beyond A Phase has been recommended by at least three local authorities. They are Brighton and Hove—no surprise—East Sussex and Gloucestershire.

This resource pack includes an infamous series of "role plays" for pupils to act out. The roles include a married man who was "done" for cottaging, an out lesbian mother, a gay teenager, a married woman who had a "one night stand" with another woman, a bisexual granny, a sado-masochistic heterosexual woman, and a transvestite cabaret artist. Your Lordships, this is for children.

In being all things to all men, the guidance failed to stop local authorities peddling inappropriate materials. The guidance has not stopped the use of Beyond A Phase. It has not stopped Brighton and Hove and East Sussex strongly recommending appalling materials. On the contrary, those authorities say that their advice to teachers complies with the guidance.

she’s hard of thinking if she actually believes transwomen are women and trans men are men.

And you’re hard of comprehension skills! Try again 👌🏻

PruthePrune · 11/09/2025 05:06

The greens deserve electoral annihilation.

Brainworm · 11/09/2025 06:11

I think we are entering the bananarama era whereby councils are going to be doing a lot of - yes, we know about the SC ruling and our obligations and when the thumb screws are placed on the table we will comply, and we know that what you are saying aligns with the law and can’t be classified as hate BUT the way you are saying it is morally unacceptable.

I think the standard response to the should be ‘sad times’! Perhaps a more constructive one would be to encourage the councillors to work with the trans community to help them participate in ways that don’t impact on single sex provision.

Sausagenbacon · 11/09/2025 06:25

As a Bristolian, where the Council is dealing with financial shortfalls, it is infuriating to see the council place itself in the path of substantial fines from the EHRC

I wonder if the councillors had to pay the fines themselves whether they'd be so keen to walk out. Personally, I think if they are refusing to implement or even discuss the law then the fine should go to the individuals not the Council as a whole.

Bristol and Brighton have always been a little more... englightened than the rest of the country. Unsurprising, really

potpourree · 11/09/2025 07:35

Not sure what is so enlightened about denying female rape survivors single sex support, telling them to set up and fund their own groups, and then trying to stop them from even doing that.

Not interrupting in slightest; rather, a direct - albeit it condensed - assertion that the two named places are noted for their progressive views that go beyond the reactionary attitudes of the rest of the country and that, further, the progressive nature of those views lend legitimacy to the actions of the council in this case.

So, what you said was "I don't like this view so post a quick image in the hopes of shutting it down rather than engaging in a meaningful, intelligent way, la la la".
What you meant was "that's an interesting assertion, but I find myself not wholly in agreement. Let me explain why so a grown up conversation can ensue"

I honestly thought you were being ironic. Please tell me that you were.

Igneococcus · 11/09/2025 08:00

Does progressivism have an endpoint? Almost by definition it doesn't, it always has to move forward, no system/society will ever be good enough. Does nobody who claims to be progressive realize that at some point they might get left behind and look like the old fuddyduddies that they so despise?

It has been eye-opening to see the values of the people that use progressive politics to enforce their regressive views (eg "feminine men aren't really men") and how taken in some actual left-wingers are by them.

As a lefty it's disappointing to see how uncritical some of my peers are to the point that they deny sexism and homophobia. Or at least can't even bring themselves to talk about it because they might have to analyse their own views.

I am perfectly happy to disagree with someone and have them think I'm horrible if they can clearly articulate their position.

I'm sure this thread will demonstrate that many fail in the second part of this.

"Progressive" genderists want us to believe that a man pretending to be a woman and having sex with another man is heterosexual and that a man pretending to be a woman and having sex with a woman is a lesbian.

Do you really believe that this view is "progressive", or do you agree that it is homophobic?

What exactly do you believe is progressive about men going into women's changing rooms?

What do you believe is progressive about men competing in women's sports?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 11/09/2025 08:13

Ah enlightened Bristol where the Bristol's women's voice includes men https://www.bristolwomensvoice.org.uk/trans-inclusion-position/

and enlightened Brighton totally happy with women not having single sex rape support services

so much enlightenment

There's no point trying to engage with someone who felt that a snide drive-by and fake quoting is a worthwhile contribution to this thread.

Could we not let them derail the discussing we were having please?

I agree re Brighton and their disgusting lack of rape support - thanks to Sarah Summers and her long dedicated battle to change this.
