Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Great news! Sanity gradually returning.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 05/07/2025 08:52

Wonderlijk as they say in the Netherlands (according to google at least).

Meanwhile the UK government is pressing ahead regardless, I suppose if it won't listen to it's own citizens, it's unlike to learn from the example of other countries. 🤬

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/07/2025 08:52

Fantastic news! Well done the Dutch! 🎉

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2025 08:55

Ooo that is interesting.

Why could that possibly be?

The ever-so 'tolerant and progressive Dutch' don't have quite as much public support as previously thought about this, coupled with the Dutch protocol being shown up to be homophobic bullshit that's harming kids?

Oh dear.

Helleofabore · 05/07/2025 09:00

Thanks Arabella. That is very interesting.

Seainasive · 05/07/2025 09:06

😀 it’s probably the first time that the word “sanity” has been applied to the Dutch government this year.

heathspeedwell · 05/07/2025 09:07

That is good news.

TheKeatingFive · 05/07/2025 09:08

Great news

They're not though - the UK doesn't have self-ID and probably never will. The SC affirmed that the law on single sex spaces means just that, single sex. The government have given no indication that they wish to change the relevant law, in fact they have said they stand by the SC decision.

It's just that it's a novel idea to many that women have rights. It will take time for organisations to catch up with the law but I'm sure they'll get there in the end.

SumUp · 05/07/2025 09:20

Common sense.

The concept of self ID, whilst well intentioned, is open to abuse, and has caused a lot of problems.

Very interesting

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/07/2025 09:34

Good

deciding to identify as a member of the opposite sex and the state then taking that seriously?

It was always fucking madness

There should be no circumstances under which the state treats a complete break with material reality with any seriousness at all. GRCs need to go next

Boiledbeetle · 05/07/2025 09:40

"The official withdrawal consists of several steps and could be completed around August, the government expects, according to the Reformatorisch Dagblad.

In doing so, the caretaker government is responding to repeated calls from the House of Representatives to withdraw the bill. If a law is withdrawn, a subsequent government, which still wishes to introduce the law, has to start the whole legislative process from scratch again. Rapid introduction of self-identification is then out of the question."

Excellent news

musicalfrog · 05/07/2025 09:46

Brilliant 👏

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2025 09:50

Want to bet there will be cries of hoards of transwomen being persecuted and having to flee to Germany?

Or do we think this one will quietly slip under the radar because it raises too many questions...

It's all Self ID, even the legal route is Self ID, and they're just recruited a senior civil servant to oversee the implementation of the Supreme Court's ruling on single-sex spaces which will also help make it easier for people to legally change their gender, which is Self ID anyway.

As the Supreme Court became aware of, anyone trying to square the circle of sex and gender will soon come unstuck. Trying to shoehorn gender into any laws will ultimately result in brain melt

Get Out No GIF

But so what if someone legally changes their "gender"? Our single sex spaces are based on just that, sex. The Government, organisations, service providers etc may have to be dragged to this conclusion kicking and screaming (though imo it is of the Willy Wonka "stop, don't, come back" variety). But we are getting there.

Edited

We know where the path of good intentions leads - and we have nearly reached the gates. Mercifully the SC put on the brakes and started turning us back.

Namitynamename · 05/07/2025 14:32

The hard right will mark this as a victory for them. In reality, there was a lot of work out in by people from across the political spectrum to point out the inherent problems in a reasonable way to others who hadn't thought about the issues. Old fashioned boring consensus building. And boring old feminists taking a lot of flack. But still, in the long run old fashioned things like democracy, freedom of speech, the rule of law won out.

mrshoho · 05/07/2025 15:01

Fantastic news!

The mighty ship is turning. I'm sure The Netherlands having seen the debacle of Spain and other nation's selfid (love how my autocorrect tried to change this to selfish!) laws and thought fuck that!

Brilliant news! Now if the rest of the EU could just follow suit that would be great.
