no idea why ppl link to articles that you need a subscription to read, pointless. we have no idea what your post is about op.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 03/07/2025 10:57

If you could post an archive link. It does look interesting. I do think historically a lot of women have been willing to take justice into their own hands. I think women supplying each other with poison to discreetly knock off men has been a thing for centuries, until autopsies of course.

Patriarchal society where women are considered property, marital rape and men who beat their wives with impunity creates a situation where the way out is to kill him. In all honesty I’m surprised more men weren’t offed regularly.

Often someone comes along who knows how to archive and produces a link that everyone can read - especially if you ask nicely 😉

Often it's already been archived so all you need do is go to archive.ph & post the URL in the box labelled "I want to search the archive for saved snapshots" then if the page is available you will find the archive URL. Quite often there will be multiple versions of the same page saved at different times.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 03/07/2025 11:08

Thank you for the link. I read the article and it confirmed what I thought, aggressive, lazy men who beat their wives get poisoned. My sympathy is all for the women to be honest. Also that tragic case where a woman poisoned her own infant so he’d go quickly rather than starving. I think people forget quite how brutal life was not do very long ago.

YourOnMute · 03/07/2025 11:19

BBC history extra had a podcast on this: an interview with a woman who wrote a book about it.

My gg (g?) grandfather drank a bowl of rat poison that his wife had "accidentally" left out - he was drunk and didn't realise.

If happened a lot I'd say

Sorry .not sure how to do that.

Go to archive.ph & copy the URL into the red box labelled "My url is alive and I want to archive its content" & it will archive the page & provide a link for you.

This case is one of the stories in a rather delightful illustrated book my son got me for me birthday - The League Of Lady Poisoners.

The history of women helping the wives in their communities to kill abusive husbands is fascinating. The “Angel Makers Of Nagyrév” weren’t the only ones. Sally Bassett of Bermuda was another interesting one.

Igneococcus · 03/07/2025 12:12

Also Guilia Tofana in Rome in the 17th century.

Surely no more than once each?

DeanElderberry · 07/07/2025 08:17

I understand that people in terrible situations do terrible things, but find it hard to celebrate mass poisoning.

or do I mean

Men, stop building societies and legal systems that oppress women.

Quite likely they were. One problem, however, in a society with no safety net was that the widow might find herself penniless and on the streets.

DeanElderberry · 07/07/2025 12:23

I wonder how it would work out in Afghanistan or Iran? Would a widow just pass into the control of her husband's male relatives?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 12/07/2025 18:04

I think she'd pass back to her own male relatives, if available (with the husband's family keeping any dowry), rather than the husband's family supporting her.
