When charities go wrong Mermaids

Just listened to this absolute white wash of a podcast.

No mention of massive data breach, no mention of nonce apologist trustees, no mention of employees engaging in the creation and distribution of extreme porn, no mention of how harmful binders are.

Just a bit of an internal scuffle over inclusivity, and lots of whingeing about how long the commission enquiry took.

I think I saw Mermaids advertising for a new COO yesterday but now can't find the ad...

It was awful. The first two episodes were quite good I thought, although I'm now wonder if they were biased as well. It was so unbalanced. They had two trans-identifying young people, a couple of clips from someone from the Charity Commission, and all the rest of the talking was done by the CEO from Mermaids. Mermaids problems all seemed to be attributed to anti-trans activists going after their reputation, which impacted their funding. No mention of the Cass Review or the changing scientific consensus on why so many young people were questioning their gender identity.

The presenter also said that LGB Alliance represents LGB people and excludes gender non-conforming people 😐

I'm surprised Mermaids is still going TBH.

I've always found it an odd choice of name - a) mermaids don't exist
b) in the original Little Mermaid story she kills herself at the end
c) makes me think of the fake 'mermaids' made by Victorians - fish skeletons and animal parts sewn together, very odd fake looking things. Much in common with the outcomes of genital surgery I suspect

According to the CEO on the podcast, their funding is starting to recover. But the whole thing seemed like a PR exercise, so who knows.

i.e. heterosexuals 🧐

Have you got a link to the podcast, please?

Well not necessarily.

You could easily be a gender non conforming lesbian or gay man, but not identify as the opposite sex.

LGB alliance is for same sex attracted people. They only 'exclude' trans people in the same way as cats protection exclude dogs - that's not the target audience for the charity.

(Obvs I'm not equating gay or trans people with dogs! Or cats!).

I think LBG Alliance would support a tw who was attracted to men (a gay man in other words) and a lesbian who called herself nb or a transman. I'm not 100% certain though.

I guess it's this:

Or you can find it on a podcast platform by searching for its title.

RiotAndAlarum · 21/06/2025 13:02

Thank you!

It depends what you mean by 'support'. They wouldn't suggest they were kicked out of groups or organisations for gay men.

But they wouldn't support that person insisting that they were a woman.

They're not 'anti trans' , they are campaigning for acceptance and services for same sex attracted people.

The T makes that impossible in the same way as it makes women's rights and spaces impossible - if you call a straight man with a 'female gender identity' a lesbian, that prevents lesbians being able to define their own experience and have their own spaces.
