Sabrina Carpenter’s new album cover

I don’t want to post the photo as it is risqué…

For those who don’t know, Sabrina Carpenter is a sexy young pop singer. Her new album cover was shared this week and it depicts her being held down at a man’s crotch by her hair.

To be honest, the image did shock me. Sabrina’s music is poppy and fun, so to go with such an aggressive image seems off-brand. Moreover, her fans are mostly young girls…

What do others think?

It reminded me of the spoof album cover 'Sniff the glove' in the mockumentary 'This is spinal tap'. Whether anyone agrees/disagrees with the image, it's caused enough controversy to get people talking about the album and, as a result, a lot of free publicity.

As I say, Spinal Tap didn't get that from nowhere...

But Scorpions' key audience was never 12 year old girls. 15 year old boys, possibly, which is a whole other can of worms.

I do know it’s 2025, where online porn has taught a generation of men that what women like is being choked, slapped, spat on and otherwise sexually demeaned, and young women are under a lot of pressure to be cool and go along with it or be damned as vanilla.

Fair comment, I have one son who is definitely not cool, and has no desire to be. I can only imagine (3 boy mum) that for the majority of later age teens Sabrina is cringe. I think maybe I’m naive in my assumption she’s empowering because she uses her sexuality
but I’m a 53 year old woman who has spent her whole adult life seeking male attention as validation. I’m not the best judge of this

That is not what feminism is, but I’ve seen it trotted out several times over this album cover.

Why is it not feminism? I’ve always felt judged for being very sexual, dressing provocatively, liking male company, liking to do my own DIY/ Garden/ bins/ loving football
why shouldn’t I use my own sexuality and looks? As a ‘feminist’ I can chose to be whoever I want. I can be lots of things, all of them my own choice, which is liberating

Boys and young men don’t need to pretend to enjoy being sexually demeaned to be cool, though. (Though some may feel under pressure to perform in this way.)

From the sexual revolution onwards, it’s women who have been expected to perform in so-called liberating, progressive ways that do little to liberate them from the shackles of men. And I think this has only got worse over the last 20 years. It’s as though the second wave feminism of the 70s never happened.

”choice” feminism is very often beneficial to men rather than women.
Look, fellas, the girls are getting their tits out for the lads only now it’s their choice, which is a great get out of jail free card for us, amirite?!?!?

Ditto women are choosing to cover themselves from head to foot in a burka. Or are they?

Just because a woman makes a choice doesn’t make it a feminist choice.

I'm unsure what you mean ?

If you can’t work out why a woman being held by her hair to a man’s crotch in mainstream music art is generally negative for women then there’s not much more I can help you with.

Yep.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 14/06/2025 20:56

She thinks she's being clever and subversive... all she's done is provide wanking material for creeps.

She isn’t doing anything new, is she? So many before her have used sex to sell. I don’t know why people are so bothered about someone doing something that’s been happening for decades already.

It’s not the using sex to sell, it’s the blade normalization of porn tropes that are generally violent and demeaning to women - hair pulling, spitting, choking…

I will agree to disagree. Feeling that you can chose who you are is empowering as a human being. My younger sons hated the loos at school because of the macho porn/ bravado/ drugs/ clique. They chose not to be that kind of man. I believe nobody coerced me in to be being the woman I am

peanutbuttertoasty · 14/06/2025 21:00

She’s the definition of pick me. Entirely male gaze. Stupid girl. Nothing clever about her whatsoever.

Nobody is stopping you. But when you become famous, if you could avoid glamorising sexual violence on your album covers then that would be fab. You could totally put yourself doing DIY or watching football on the cover though 😄

That’s what we’re hoping for all women. It generally helps the cause to not make an own goal by putting yourself being held by your hair to a man’s crotch. I hope she did make that decision for herself though and wasn’t coerced by the very male led and unforgiving music industry.

She doesn’t need to play pick me, she is HUGELY successful
what is stupid about exploiting that?

DipsyDee · 14/06/2025 21:04

Is this what young women have been reduced to to sell their music? What happened to talent?

You don’t have to look very far to see what looks like extremely successful women in the music business being exploited. Take a look at Britney Spears for example, there are so many more.

She is talented. I took my 13 year old niece to see her, she was fabulous. Shes also a normal, curvy, beautiful woman
my niece is quite capable of understanding it’s entertainment

Ah condescension perfect way to communicate with other women trying to understand a point. Keep that up it must get you far.

Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were being purposely naïve. I genuinely couldn’t understand why you would see this as sex positive without explaining further. Fair enough though

My point exactly - her target audience is teenagers so she maybe should hold back on the 50 Shades of Gray imagery.

MaryTheTurtle · 14/06/2025 21:19

She’s at the level of his crotch and he’s pulling her hair up
snd look at wheat happening she’s being talked about
same as the shit show that was the Brits

hellotomrw · 14/06/2025 21:20

Her songs are definitely not for young girls you need to read the lyrics. Maybe this is good as it makes people realise she isn’t made for children!
