The Bluestocking - where the laugh emoji is sorely missed.

Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms!

The company is always sparkling, the drinks are always sublime, and the cakes are mysteriously free from gluten, sugar, calories, and troublesome booze… not that you’d ever notice. 😏

Our enthusiastic team of gerbil waitstaff is ably supported by capybaras, quokkas, and other charming creatures who excel at their jobs while looking outrageously adorable.

You will find many things to laugh at - usually out loud - so take care not to spit out your tea. We are considering a petition for the return of the laugh emoji - just as soon as the AI gerbils learn how to spell.

New Bluestockingers are always welcome. Men can pop along to The Staunch Ally nearby.

Currently also knitting a Woolly Hug blanket for Bluestockinger Swashbuckled. Details here if you can knit or crochet a square before the 18 July.

Afternoon all! Bar gerbil, I'd like a long, cold drink and someone to rant at, please.

Go for it!

So, management, eh? What are they like?

Is that you, @ifIwerenotanandroid, or one of your cousins? Either way, thanks!

No, it's a dedicated Rant-o-Bot. The gerbils ordered one for the Bluey. I don't think we're related.

The gerbils are always anticipating the need, aren't they? Excellent planning on their part!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 26/06/2025 18:06

Rant-o-Bot: So, what are you going to do? Is the inappropriate teaching an add-on or a substitution? How do you feel about that?

User manual: The Rant-o-Bot is fitted with a soft but reinforced posterior so that a well-aimed kick there is extremely satisfying to the kicker & allows a therapeutic expression of pent-up emotions. Simply ask your Rant-o-Bot to turn round & it will comply & assume the correct position for maximum efficiency.

Fairly high order idiocy... Of the sort that says "Hey, you can teach something completely unrelated to your speciality, can't you?". Imagine an art teacher being asked to teach biology for a year because that's the easiest way to make the spreadsheet balance.

I hear you.

I actually was an art teacher and I taught maths, RE, motor vehicle engineering and SEN English.

It's not good. I lasted 1.5 terms.

Magpiecomplex · 26/06/2025 18:21

Oops. I might have been a bit keen to start with the kicking.

I should think after that lot, Fuzzy, you needed a Rant-o-Bot.

I could do with one. I regularly rant about stupidity. I gather from my DC that it is one of my defining traits.

Well done for lasting that long!

But I see that Magpie has knocked it for six....

Oh, grrr, grrr and thrice grrr.

I’m a very experienced teacher but not of art nor science but I could no more teach art than fly. I imagine I might make a stab at teaching biology, given sufficient time to prepare and younger students but it would all fall down when one of them asked me a question about something I hadn’t prepared for: I wouldn’t be able to link ideas nor understand the whole foundations of the subject so I wouldn’t be teaching it well.

While appreciating this isn’t your exact situation, has the person who asked you to do whatever it is ever taught anyone at all? Are they the sort of person who thinks all teachers need to do is just stay one chapter ahead of the students, and that doesn’t take long?

Magpiecomplex · 26/06/2025 18:35

@JuneShellChangeHerTune they've been out of teaching for several years now, and they haven't the faintest idea about what we teach anyway (we're very niche).

Is the Rant-o-Bot singing 'Daisy....Daisy...' very v e r y s l o w l y?

I'm imagining Sinatra singing 'Give me one for my baby, and one more for the road' to a robot.

Hang on. Filthy lucre changing hands in the Bluestocking? Surely not! What happened to just signing chitties that vanish at midnight?

I'll happily lose a tea cake to that vicious creature if it helps keep me from its clutches.

I reckon JKR got it shipped in as she was loathe to give me my super yacht back. She was only supposed to be borrowing it for a publicity photo (The cigar one) but has since done a runner with the engine keys and the first mate.

😂
Because they took away the laugh button.

I finally discover AI as a means to start writing coherent letters to my MP, and what's the first thing I do? Start fantasy terf wars.

P,S. I don't believe a word you say.

Surely the Bluestocking supplies all patrons with a limitless supply of specially designed tavern tokens?

It might be a bit of Irish history so obscure they can't figure out if it's real or code for something else

DeanElderberry · 26/06/2025 20:00

Or so scary they dare not let it be revealed, like the fairy badger of Rath?

DeanElderberry · 26/06/2025 20:08

Am I bad person for finding this hilarious?

While hoping the gerbils saw through the scam and stuck with Barry's.
