Schools to convert gender-neutral toilets to single-sex

Only in Scotland, mind. And only "at least 18" so far.

Don't know what the situation is like elsewhere in the UK.

I hope Nicola Sturgeon is having a 💩 day.

A generic photo of a ladies' toilet sign on a wall outside a toilet. The sign has a white lady symbol on a red background. The doorway has pale cream tiles.

Scottish schools to convert gender-neutral toilets to single-sex

At least 18 schools are making changes after a court ruling on the provision of gender-neutral bathroom facilities.

I just read that too.

DragonRunor · 13/06/2025 12:29

I think a lot of (most?) people have gone along with this stuff rather than wholeheartedly believing. Few are really committed enough to risk breaking the law. It’s grimly satisfying to read that on the bbc!

Keeptoiletssafe · 13/06/2025 18:44

Good. I hope incidents that happened made them reflect and realise how dangerous they are. It shouldn’t have ever got to that stage though.

A few years back my child's secondary school opened some gender neutral, apparently none of the kids liked using them (too embarrassing , there might be girls in there, according to my son who was yr 7 at the time) and would walk further to find single sex alternatives so in the end they became single sex too.

Apparently they're going to create separate bathrooms, does this mean they'll be adding baths too?

DuesToTheDirt · 13/06/2025 19:22

Excellent news.

But what a waste of money, making all their toilets gender neutral (against all common sense) and having to put them back to single-sex. Firstly, it's public money - our money. And secondly, schools are strapped for cash, and there are much better things to spend it on.

Its quite normal in Scotland to use the word bathroom meaning the room with a toilet.

Ah. Is that where the American usage of bathroom comes from? It sounds rather strange in English English.

Interesting, even for outside of the home? All my in-laws are Scottish and never heard them say this.

Yep - I need the bathroom, or I'm just going to the bathroom. Normal usage outwith the home.
Maybe its a west coast thing.

I'm in the North East and would either use or understand the use of 'bathroom' to mean 'toilet'.

Just as I understand 'stay' to mean 'live'. Easter Smile

This is going to end up being very expensive for the new build schools that only have "unisex" toilets...

Oldfashioneddinosaur · 14/06/2025 07:35

I stand corrected!
Sorry, didn't mean to derail.
