This child was on the autistic spectrum and had serious mental health issues, including anorexia. She had experienced sexual abuse from an older boy when she was 5. At puberty her distress about her changing body triggered anorexia. She later declared herself non-binary and male and was affirmed by school and social services without question. Her parents knew it was part of her mental struggles. They tried to limit internet access. She left home. Social Services and other agencies which were supposed to be looking after her seem to have failed completely to grasp how serious her ED was and didn't limit her internet access. She died. Inquest pending. Desperately sad.

Teenager starves to death alone in emergency accommodation

The 17-year-old's parents say multiple agencies failed their child.

I was in tears reading this today.

I noticed it was on the front page of Stuff. I hope it gets further media coverage.

Horrifying that this was allowed to happen. My thoughts are with Vanessa's parents. They and their daughter were badly let down.

Eughhhh. This is desperately sad. Rest in peace Vanessa.

From the article:

At the scene, the Police corrected us when we used Vanessa's name and insisted on using a male name and pronouns," remembers Catherine. "I was so distressed by this."

Vanessa's parents believe the teenager's death was the result of the removal of the protections of the Compulsory Treatment Order nine months previously.

Catherine said it appeared there was "wilful blindness" on the part of those professionals, who were so focused on affirming Vanessa's gender identity, but did not pay the same attention to the eating disorder which would kill her.

I am in NZ and have read the article from Stuff. Its incredibly sad and everyone has lost something out of it. It evident this person was harmed as a child and was just trying desperately to control everything around them to the point of obsession.

I have known families who have had anorexic teens and it really takes a toll on people. The anorexia turns them into monsters, and its exhausting all time walking on eggshells.

So terribly sad and pointless suffering.

It's incredible sad, she was massively failed by CHAMS and SS

but I also don't really think it's fair they're trying to place some blame on the motel worker- they are not medical or support people in anyway shape or form.. anyone that's been in supported living in NZ knows the absolute weirdos that can be in their, and there's all sorts of bizarre requests.

Vanessa’s parents have put out a press release in response to criticism of them by one of NZ’s resident alpha brocialists, Louis Theroux wannabe David Farrier and his aspiring to be Jolyon Maugham women’s existence denier sidekick, Paul Thistoll. You can read it here. The parents are incredibly brave people who went through hell trying to help their daughter while the state agencies which encourage her estrangement from them because they insisted they could do better, in fact, left her to die. Here is the press release: https://x.com/aniobrien/status/1934823350502871132 you can also find it on Substack if you search for Resist Gender Education Vanessa Press Release - I’m just scared to link because I’m not sure if the link will reveal my user name there.
