Laila Mickelwait has been working to shut down Pornhub and hold its executives accountable for aiding trafficking and child abuse for years and now she’s nearly there. I’ll be embroidering this incredible women’s name on Jean Hatchet’s Terf dress.

Are we going to have crass journalists asking her if she feels sad for depriving so many of a resource that they enjoyed?

Yes, I am riffing off the SC coverage.

Brava to this splendid woman, her endurance and achievements.

ArabellaScott · 08/06/2025 13:36

She should be given some kind of award or recognition.

lcakethereforeIam · 08/06/2025 15:00

Brilliant.

Jean Hatchet has a terf dress?

Barearse · 08/06/2025 20:24

Yes @lcakethereforeIam In response to the National Trust’s shameful reaction to the JKR sewing over and subsequent unpicking by Jean, she’s planned a new dress!

’I’m going to make a dress and tour it round and you can all add the names of any (female) TERF you’d like to honour. None of the names will be crossed out - whoever has beef with whoever else. Get them all on there. Famous, not famous, bit of an arsehole/heroine. I’ll make it this week. We can keep it somewhere TERFY for history purposes.

#TerfsDidThis’

There’s a list of towns and cities it’ll be touring and women (no men allowed for this one) are invited to sew their fave turf’s name on it!

I misunderstood at first and thought it was for terfs to sew their fave feminists name on it but I’m counting on Laila Mickelwait being a bit of a terf too.

What a shame I can’t embroider. Loads of names I’d like to add

Xiaoxiong · 09/06/2025 16:16

I can't believe that her Wikipedia entry:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laila_Mickelwait

Says:

"Mickelwait's Traffickinghub petition to "shut down Pornhub and hold its executives accountable for aiding trafficking" has garnered over 2 million signatures from 192 countries and has played an important role in her fight for accountability. Mickelwait's activism and leadership of the Traffickinghub movement played a pivotal role[14][18] in Visa, Mastercard and Discover cutting all ties with Pornhub[19][20][21] and Pornhub removing over 80 percent of the site's content, totaling over 30 million images and 10 million videos[22][23][24][25] in what Financial Times called "probably the biggest takedown of content in internet history."[26]

Then, at the top it says:

"This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. "

Then if you go to the talk page to find out how to improve the article it says "This article is rated Stub-class on Wikipedia's content assessment scale.
It is of interest to the following WikiProjects: Pornography ("low-importance")

If you click in to see what has been rated high importance, it includes the "top 50 porn stars" and medium importance includes "mid-importance performers are required to have multiple, non-trivial articles written about them outside adult industry journals, multiple important pornography awards (e.g. AVN Awards), or an induction into a notable Hall of Fame (e.g. AVN Hall of Fame)."

It quickly becomes clear that the Pornography Project is all about deciding which porn stars deserve to have a wikipedia page to themselves, rather than a woman who has fought for accountability, legality and safety, and is responsible for he biggest takedown of content in internet history.

Infuriating.

Ashamed to say I hadn't heard of her. But this is great news and a major achievement. Thank you Laila.

WinterTrees · 09/06/2025 17:44

Thank you for posting this. I wasn't aware of her either and the avalanche of repulsive porn being constantly spewed into the internet and people's brains is one of the things that makes me feel genuine despair for the future of women and humanity. I feel overwhelmed by it and my response, I'm slightly ashamed to say, is to turn away. To discover that Laila has worked so tirelessly from the same starting point and made such an astonishing impact is humbling, inspiring and beyond impressive. Much gratitude and admiration from me.

shallishanti · 09/06/2025 19:56

wonderful woman

Christinapple · 09/06/2025 23:11

To clarify it's not "being shut down" it's removing unverified content again.

Hate to break it to you but there are thousands of streaming video porn sites online most don't have any verification in place at all. People just focus on Pornhub only as it's the most well known.

Barearse · 09/06/2025 23:18

Yeah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Oh right. Best not worry about the footage of sexual abuse on it then

So this means, what? We should sneer or dismiss this woman’s efforts? Honestly Christ, if you call yourself a feminist are you not happy to hear of this win however tiny and insignificant? Plus, who knows, maybe this is the tiny flame that starts a bigger flame. We can but hope.

So she's trimmed the hair on the head of one porn player. One hundred more will grow in its place. Don't you realise that there are thousands of other sites with the exact same content. Does anyone even use pornhub anymore? I prefer xvideos or redtube.

gosh, imagine you being deprived of images of child abuse. Your jubilation that you can continue to find these elsewhere on the internet is just super

I know - really weird - I've never come across anyone who announced to a room full of strangers what their favourite porn sites are - social skills really are tanking

Is that where all the child rape videos are hosted now then?

I thought Pornhub's viewing numbers would drop after they removed a large number of videos back in 2020 I think, but they're still massively popular in France at least. Fun fact- France blocked Pornhub recently and in the space of 30 mins ProtonVPN's membership there increased by 1,000% (according to ProtonVPN see tweet below). I guess because PH is the most talked about and gets so much free advertising that's the first choice for many.

https://x.com/ProtonVPN/status/1930338080332099663

And I understand this is also about continuing to remove unverified videos just because they are unverified without any evidence there is abuse or trafficking happening? This would seem unlikely now and in recent years since PH has very strict rules in place including users to verify their ID to upload anything new and to state exactly who is depicted in the video, I believe the other big name porn sites like xvideos are slowly starting to follow suit.

There has also been misinformation about PH- for example Julie Bindel lied about PH having a "war r*pe category".

If you have came across any videos of the sense you are describing I hope you have reported them to the police, the IWF and the porn site you have seen them on? Pornhub and others as mentioned now know the identify (because they verified, so tracking IPs isn't even needed) of everyone who has uploaded a video to their site and they will co-operate with LE.

I don't think Chris calls himself a feminist. He's just a bloke who hates women and loves porn. No idea why he posts on here.

BebeFitterLoco · 11/06/2025 05:38

Given the evidence and impact of it, why haven't the government intervened sooner? 🤔 There seem to be ridiculous laws and regulations for banal BS, but nowt for this sort of thing? Odd.

As I said earlier, governments could put an end to this if they wanted to. Why aren't we asking, why don't they want to?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 11/06/2025 07:30

all this anger because pornhub are being forced to remove videos that the uploader can’t prove are made by consenting adults only.

I mean that sounds like an unequivocally good thing to me.

oh, and this is a feminist board. You can fully type out the word ‘rape’ for heaven’s sake.

porn (even porn that might be created without the consent of the participants) = good

typing in full the word used to describe sex without consent = not ok, break out the asterisks!

myplace · 11/06/2025 07:37

Laila is a shero. She has raised awareness, driven up standards and expectations, and shifted the dialogue and direction of travel to protect the vulnerable.

Of course men will always make more, that’s the nature of the porn addled brain and a consumer society. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable and it doesn’t lessen her achievement.
