Rainy afternoon so flicking about on Netflix for a movie to watch while the dogs dry off in front of the fire.

Has one of my favourite actresses in (Lesley Manville) so gave it a go. It was really interesting to me as someone who was a young girl at the time of the film. I vaguely recall Miss World and the protests but the casual sexism and objectification of women wasn’t really on my radar as an eight year old. Interesting too the disagreements between women on how to go about things…

I do hope it won’t take 50 years to make a film about the amazing women of FWS. As it said at the end of this one “Attempts to bring down the patriarchy remain ongoing”.

It’s worth a watch. Anyone else already seen it?

Haven't seen it, but I saw a really good documentary on the contest & the protest:

Miss World 1970: Beauty Queens and Bedlam

Just watched and the onion fairy is flying about. Really good. Quite understated and I loved that they played Ride of the Valkaries at the theatre!

Saw it on telly and loved it! I recorded it and played back the climax so often that if it had been on video it would have worn out the tape.

The casual sexism was very much everyday life back then. I can still recall the wonderful unleashed feeling as Women’s Liberation took off.

And yes, can’t wait to see women’s struggle against today’s male supremacists immortalised on film. The political climate in the 60s and 70s was very much more supportive than now. We’ll have to wait a bit till the establishment finally gives in on trying to erase women as a sex class.

The film and the documentary are very good.
