Man admits being vile, here's how we can blame it on a woman.

It's Taylor's fault.

Not sure what's happened here, need more detail.

Raquelos · 01/06/2025 13:08

That first rule of misogyny just never goes away, does it?

Issue: Matty Healey is an over exposed, dislikable prick who likes to tug off to unpleasant porn.
Fault: Taylor Swift for ... reasons.

ffs

IwantmyReptv · 01/06/2025 13:09

Matty from The 1975 admitted to watching dreadful videos showing women being assaulted.

I'm not even sure when it happened and the link between the timescale of their relationship. It was a while ago.

DisappearingGirl · 01/06/2025 13:10

Well she wrote a whole (brilliant) album about what a knob he was so if she was in any way to blame (she wasn't), I think she's redeemed herself

DuesToTheDirt · 01/06/2025 13:46

Right, that's The 1975 in the bin. There are fewer and fewer still not in the bin.

Right, that's The 1975 in the bin. There are fewer and fewer still not in the bin.

The 1975 have always been a controversial band - a lot of what he says is part of a persona/character and plays into the trope of a wayward out of control rock star who’s pushing boundaries.

The masturbating to violent degrading porn alluded to was a quip on a podcast when he laughed as SOMEONE ELSE mentioned a porn site called Ghetto Gaggers. I don’t know if its a real site (not going to check) and clearly the whole convo went a bit ‘locker room’.

He’s since apologised and goes to great lengths to admit when he fucks up. He’s done it a lot!

But he’s grown up in a showbiz family with addiction issues, so of course he’s going to be a bit fucked up!

He’s absolutely not racist, sexist or homophobic, but he gets labelled as such all the time, despite championing female artists, having relationships with women of colour (and at the very least kissing other men). People just latch on to one stupid joke and think that represents the whole man.

Maybe instead of clutching at headlines, imagine for one moment that every stupid thing you ever said got published online. Sometimes people mess up. We’re all human.

And I love Taylor too, but we hear only her side of the story on TTPD, I’d love to hear his!

DisappearingGirl · 01/06/2025 17:12

*SnowflakeSmasher86 *true. I don't object to him that much really - no worse than any other rock star. Just objecting to people blaming a bloke using porn on a woman he dated briefly!

I agree it would be interesting to hear Matty's side!

Bbq1 · 01/06/2025 20:12

Matty Healy from The 1974, a rock star?! 😂That's like calling Chris Martin a rock star. They are pop stars.

I thought we were past the narrative now of 'playing up to a trope' and now know that when they demonstrate x, y and z, it is in fact because they are x, y and z.

its not a persona

(see Marilyn Manson)

Plasticwaste · 01/06/2025 20:23

It strikes me from visiting certain celeb gossip sites that some people absolutely loathe women who earn their wealth and power through their own merits and creativity. It is very marked in regards to Taylor Swift and JKR. They'll try anything to push them off the pedestals they placed them on.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 01/06/2025 23:07

Bbq1 · 01/06/2025 20:12

They’re actually very diverse in terms of their musical style. If you’ve only ever heard Chocolate or Oh Caroline you might pigeonhole them as pop, but they have punk pop roots, and take influences from rock, jazz, house, ambient psychedelic soundscapes, jungle, folk, spoken word poetry, gospel amongst other genres!

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 01/06/2025 23:10

"The smallest man who ever lived" is such an amazing take down, I don't think I could show my face in public if anyone wrote that about me.

SpunkySquid · 01/06/2025 23:11

This Matty Healy hardcore porn thing was a few years ago.

Zov · 01/06/2025 23:15

I really like the 1975. (It's not The 1974 @Bbq1 !)

But yeah @colourmystic YANBU. As someone said, No 1 in the rules of misogyny applies here. This is nothing to do with Taylor FGS! But hey, let's blame a woman for what a man does. I reckon Matt was just pissing about and trying to be radical and shocking. It backfired a bit though.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 01/06/2025 23:18

Think this one probably counts as rock?!

No it’s absolutely a persona. See the live stage show where he does push ups and eats ‘raw meat’ as a parody of toxic masculinity, stumbles around pretending to be drunk on the wine and hip flask he carries on stage, and then crawls into a TV set to illustrate that we’re not consuming media, its consuming us.

From a cynical perspective, its only legal to smoke on stage if you’re playing a character, which is why he said he wrote the show as he did.

Sorry for the derail, but as a fan it pisses me off to hear people taking the parody seriously as they take what the headlines say as gospel.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/06/2025 23:32

@colourmystic I thought this thread was going to be from two years ago

I also think you've taken the comment out of context

There were some crazed fans - see "but daddy I love him" lyrics for an explanation - who were thinking her choice of relationship was their business. and I think they made comments like "either she's nuts or he's not as bad as the press make him out to be."

But this was ages ago.

Funnily enough, I was going to start a thread about how great it is that she's got her masters back but I didn't think anyone here would care

Also, I think we have some very strange laws around creativity and intellectual property for her and many other artists to end up in this situation in the first place

But probably not a discussion for MN.

editing to add - I love the 1975. But I can't imagine Matty Healy can hold on to PR staff for very long. Talk about a nightmare client.

I do think the stuff from his shows gets misrepresented a lot. "like context in a modern debate, I just took it out" etc.

I hope he doesn't do anything stupid at Glastonbury. Such a great band, hopefully they'll just do a great performance.

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 01/06/2025 23:33

So are the porn comments parody too?

I know, it was a mistake! I don't rate them at all and thinks MH tries so hard to project a rock image when he's a pop artist. Same with McFly and Busted (both of whom I don't mind) who think they are rock stars!! C'mon lads, you're singing pop songs and take a look at your fan base.. You aren't Motorhead Sabbath or Iron Maiden!

Bit lost here

Are you linking up the behaviour to being a rock or a pop band?

I don't think they think of themselves as being rock. They're quite proud of all the synth aren't they? The 1975 I mean.

Eh, no. This is the audio clip. He watched it, admitted to watching it and thought it was hilarious: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fauxmoi/comments/13es88l/back_in_february_matty_healy_admitted_to_watching/

No headline clutching here. If you wank to black women being utterly brutalised…and in fact think it’s hilarious, you are trash. I don’t care how many people you kiss.

PullTheBricksDown · 01/06/2025 23:49

There's no limit to what a successful woman, or indeed any woman, can be blamed for, is there? How Taylor Swift is supposed to be responsible for anything an ex says or does I don't know. Was she supposed to consult her crystal ball before even going out with him?

I think the argument is that she didn't need a crystal ball because it was already clear who Matty was. The interview is from before they were going out.

I was very surprised that they were dating but I don't believe that anyone's personal life is my business.

I'm not sure why this has been posted today. It's probably going to confuse a bunch of people. I suppose some people felt Taylor dating him was an endorsement of some of his behaviour.

I'm not someone who keeps up with this stuff. I'm a big fan of their music. At one point in time, I felt like a unicorn. Someone who loves Taylor and The 1975 😂

they will be the most listened to artists in my collection for the last 15 years.
