Are toilets still allowed to be cleaned by members of the opposite sex?

I see signs saying toilets may be cleaned by members of the opposite sex in a lot of places. Is this allowed after the supreme court ruling? If a male cleaner was in there it would be a mixed sex space.

Now, look here, Bernard, are you suggesting that saying 'Abracadabra' doesn't cure illnesses and diseases, and that 'I identify as a woman' doesn't change that person's sex?

Reality has a heart of stone-cold marble, doesn't it care about feelings?

I thought you were channelling Yes Minister for a moment there.

I am getting strong Sir Humphrey vibes from some posters.

The boys who are going to be going into the ladies loos with their mum/granma etc are going to under the age of 8. Possibly a few shy/nervous 9 and 10 yos. And some older kids with additional needs.
If you are concerned those kids are a risk to you then how do you manage to exist on a daily basis going about your life? You must be worried about so many things. Best stay in your bedroom forever more. You'll be safe then!

How is it you are apparently worried about the risk an 8yo boy might pose to you in the ladies but arent worried about the risk an adult man in a dress would be to you? How very odd you are.

Unless of course...... you are yourself an adult man who likes going into the ladies loos in dresses. In which case - best for us all that you do stay in your bedroom forever more. Excellent plan. Do that.

How is it you are apparently worried about the risk an 8yo boy might pose to you in the ladies but aren't worried about the risk an adult man in a dress would be to you? How very odd you are.

This ideology takes people to the strangest of places, doesn't it?

I think you’re exaggerating the judgement. It was very clear that it only clarified male and female for the Equality Act. Trans people can still get a GRC that changes their sex for other purposes.

It’s a legal fiction. Humans can’t change sex. Beavers used to be classed as fish so you could eat them on a Friday. They are not fish.

Are male cleaners and children the new "I have a gender neutral bathroom in my house"?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/05/2025 21:20

’I’m as GC as they come but I simply can’t understand the difference between an 8 year old boy with his Mum and an uninvited man in a frock’

MarieDeGournay · 27/05/2025 21:23

There's another thread running which also seems to be fuelled by the same sort of 'ah yes, but have you thought of THIS!' But what about THAT!' 'I put it to you THE OTHER!'.
I think it's the written-down version of the love of the sound of your own voice saying things that sound very very clever to your own ears🙄

Do you have any news articles from the UK about trans people attacking other in the loo?

Ooh yes…. Lots….. but in the words of the TRA, educate yourself, why make us do all the work. Google is your friend 😂😂😂😂

Toseland · 27/05/2025 21:25

I can remember when male toilet cleaners started to become common in cleaning women's toilets in the late 1980s. There was a lot of discussion amongst women as to whether this was acceptable.
I can also remember in large department stores and ballrooms in the early 70's that next to the toilets there was often a powder room with a female attendant, soft chairs, dressing tables and mirrors!

Yep!
The Stud magazine - an edition from decades ago. It talked about the male gaze and toilet door gaps in American public toilets. It was the source of inspiration for an American architect whose later article was referenced by a company reporting ‘evidence’ of why people with long term health conditions in the U.K. should have enclosed toilets. When I looked at the ‘evidence’ reference it was because transactivists had a preference for enclosed toilets in trendy New York nightclubs. Surprising, but true.

Also surprising was that the fact most of the long term health conditions weren’t even mentioned in this government commissioned report on toilet design, but non binary crotch heights were discussed! Unsurprisingly that the company got a Stonewall Award a year later in 2023.

I really didn’t not expect I would go to any of those places when I started looking at why the gaps had gone from toilet door design!

Are toilets still allowed to be cleaned by members of the opposite sex?

11 pages to say “Yes”.

I realize on Mumsnet, “No is a complete sentence,” but I think the same applies here!

And now I’m going to have to go through all the pages to see what all you clever and witty women have written.

viques · 27/05/2025 21:31

PoisedRubyLion · 27/05/2025 19:18

I think you’re assuming every woman has consented to male cleaners being in the space.

Plenty of us are happy to have trans women in the toilets with us, so why isn’t that enough?

“Plenty”. A very noncommittal way to enumerate. Personally I would use lots, or many, or most, or a majority, which would be as vague but probably more accurate.

See , it’s that language thing again, so important to recognise how easy it is to fudge things by using language.

Okiedokie123 · 27/05/2025 21:32

@TheKeatingFive It really does! It honestly baffles me that so many seemingly intelligent people are willing to debate obvious scientific fact.
Or not even bother to debate - just willingly accept nonsense.

Toseland · 27/05/2025 21:34

WhatNextCatsAsDoctors · 27/05/2025 17:25

I don’t understand why people on here wouldn’t be as concerned with male cleaners in toilets as they are trans women in toilets? The mantra for so long has been ‘no men in women’s spaces’. If you agree with the premise that men lurk in women’s bathrooms for cruel-intentioned reasons, surely it’s easier for a man to grab a ‘male cleaner present’ sign and a cleaner’s uniform than it is to go through the process of transitioning to be a woman.

Why are you so outraged at one, and not the other?

Intent and consent. Do male cleaners use women and children to get a thrill of entering a forbidden space to enhance their sexual jollies? Do male cleaners take selfies in sexual poses and underwear to post and brag about on the Internet?

nutmeg7 · 27/05/2025 21:43

PoisedRubyLion · 27/05/2025 19:22

I did! I don’t consent male cleaners, so does this mean it stops now?

By all means start a campaign to stop it.

viques · 27/05/2025 21:43

PoisedRubyLion · 27/05/2025 19:54

Because I disagree that trans women are men

But they aren’t women, apart from their “feelings” and I don’t know how you measure or calculate them.

Their pelvic bone formation alone means that pathologists and future archaeologists will know instantly that their sex is male. No need to discuss chromosomes, gametes, or DSDs. Doesn’t matter what surgery, implants, facial feminisation has been performed, no matter what hormones have been consumed . A male body that has lived life as a male is the body of a man.

It comes down to a conviction of mind, which does not really translate into reality.

Do you really think most TW are just using the toilet for a sexual thrill or to take a selfie?

OP posts:
Coatsoff42 · 27/05/2025 21:48

I don’t know why trans identifying men are not going in men’s toilets. Perhaps they could discuss that issue with men. It seems like a man’s problem.

PoisedRubyLion · 27/05/2025 21:45

Well if they just wanted to pee, they’d use the male toilets. Which presumably they will now do, as they only want to pee apparently.

The remaining ones that still insist on using the female loos - yes, it’s for nefarious reasons. Obviously.

Okiedokie123 · 27/05/2025 21:57

I went to a loo recently that was being cleaned when I arrived. By a male cleaner. As soon as I went in he said "Would you like me to leave? I wont mind if you say yes"

What a hero. Doing his job and doing so in a totally respectful way.

Trans"women" dont do that though do they @PoisedRubyLion

And yes I do think that they are mostly in there cos they get a thrill out of it. If all they wanted to do was wee........they'd be asking for gender neutral facilities. But they arent.

In sport.......if all troons wanted was to compete in sport they'd happily accept a gender neutral/mixed competition. But they dont want that. Hence when its been an option........ they've had barely any competitors.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/05/2025 21:58

To be fair, when I see a man in the ladies loos without a good reason (like being there to clean, or being an 8 year old boy with his mum), then yeah, I assume they’re up to no good
