They’ve closed the comments, but as you can see it wasn’t going well for them…

They claimed that they don’t need permission as they are the ones who give permission for such flags? Does anyone know if this is correct?

They then claim it was a private decision (despite being Tweeted from the official account!)

The posts on the (official) Newcastle City Council account sound like they were written by a petulant teenager.

Who's betting that there will be an 'Our social media intern regrettably made some unwise posts over the weekend and we are dealing with the matter' post on Monday?

But then again, maybe not....

I do enjoy it when gay people are lectured for pointing out the homophobia in the 'LGBTQ+ friendly' stuff, and told that Other and Better Gay People (the right sort) don't want nasty things like sex reality in their lives and said it was Fine.

But it's good to see that more and more people are wise to that particular bit of confidence trickery.

I came on here to see if there was a thread about this. The replies from the council are terrible and very antagonistic.

I doubt it. I've spent a lot of time in the North East. I worked there for a while and have good friends still. Yes there's the friendly Toon good time party side, but there's another side to Geordie culture which is judgemental and sanctimonious.

You are so very right. I'm a Geordie and have always hated this about Newcastle, it's not as bad as it was but still let's us all down.

I dont have time to google it, but Im sure Ive seen here and elsewhere that Flags on Council Buildings are specifically restricted, I think I saw something like this before.

Clingfilm · 18/05/2025 19:29

Wow, that is not how a professional organisation like that is supposed to reply! In fact you just don't, you leave the comments alone... They're not an online clothes company, they're a fucking council! Either they have some blue haired kid working for them or they have a councillor (that'll be a man) who's putting pressure on.

Is this that Reform run councils are restricting flying of flags to Union Jack, St George and county flags? https://news.sky.com/story/reform-pledges-to-ban-all-flags-except-union-jack-and-st-georges-cross-on-public-buildings-13362235 Newcastle did not have county council elections this year but in 2026 1/3 of their seats will be up for election. In a recent by election the county council gained a reform member. Perhaps this sort of action will push the electorate to bring in more to support her next May?

Reform pledges to ban all flags except Union Jack, St George's Cross and county flags on public buildings

Labour have raised concerns about the Ukrainian flag being banned from flying, while Conservatives have highlighted the initial announcement's exclusion of county flags. Reform says the latter will be allowed due to national heritage.

That has 100% either been hacked, or commandeered by someone very young who is going to get their arse handed to them on a plate tomorrow by their boss.

Unbelievably, the thread is still up and open, replies and all! I thought it would be zapped first thing this morning.

I don’t get this as new Tory councillor Doc Annand is likely to be against it
