It’s been a while since I last saw everyone!

Welcome to everyone, regulars, lurkers, newly ventured in.

A place for women to discuss whatever takes their fancy, where the bar staff are attentive gerbils, Rosy the Red Panda is available for cuddles and all sweet things have no calories and all alcohol leaves the drinker slightly merry and hangover-free.

The Bluestocking Women's Pub, where brains can exist in a single state | Mumsnet

Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nons...

That's my cat IRL! I thought he was in the garden but he's obviously strayed. Will someone point him in the right direction & send him on his way, please?

Btw, just discovered some lovely pet food. Today's the last day of 15% off & free posting.

Sheringham (which you’d think is on the east coast, in Norfolk) is completely wrong. When you look out to sea the sun sets on your left.
As can be seen from the maps, Sheringham sits on the north Norfolk coast so the sun does indeed set in the west to the left.
I believe that there are only two places in the UK where the sun both rises and sets over the sea on the same day: Cromer and Lowestoft. Cromer is a few miles east of Sheringham and Lowestoft is the furthest point east in the UK. If you travelled directly north from both places, you would not hit land and would end up at the North Pole.
My DM was persuaded to see a magnificent sunrise in Israel many years ago and grumbled that she had to get up far too early and she’d seen better on the Norfolk coast.

Hunstanton looks even wronger. I’ve never been to the north Norfolk coast - maybe next year, DD has suggested we do the southern Broads together, and then having got out that way (Norfolk takes about as long to get to as Fort William from here I think) DH and I would stay and explore. One of the things we want to gradually do is walk the nice parts of the coast paths.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/05/2025 19:36

Meanwhile, we got home today, I’ve been gardening most of the time since then - so much growth in just over a week, but one or two deaths because of the dryness?

briefly spotted an eagle just before turning into the Green Welly Stop (anyone who has been to the top left of Scotland probably knows where that is).

Hunstanton is very commercial. Burger vans, slot machines, ice cream on the concrete path above the beach. There is no beach when the tide comes in and it's pretty ugly.

Sheringham is nicer than Cromer, though both have faded grandeur.

Wells-next-the-Sea is very middle class with naice shops. A mile from the town is the beach. Massive, sandy and lovely and there's a lovely little bit where the water is shallow enough for young kids and surrounded by sand bars. However, the tide can come in very quickly and cut you off and it comes very close to the shore.

Re weight loss - we did Zoe about 18 months ago, found it quite useful and have altered our eating somewhat. DH is now also focussing on low inflammatory eating because of his eye issues, which has quite a lot in common. Lots of veg (preferably organic) and fruit, fermented foods, omega 3 - salmon features a lot. Barely any refined carbs. A square or two of 85% chocolate. We also log with nutracheck (not when on holiday!) - I’m short so it’s really easy to eat more than I need. But I don’t find it onerous and enjoy what we’re eating - really don’t miss very sweet stuff. Gradually got down to just within healthy bmi range (before the hols!) - and I think now I’m in my 60s the upper end is better than attempting much lower.

Holme-next-the-sea is beautiful and wild, but beware the sea.

There’s a good bus route on parts of the North Norfolk coast, £3 for a single journey, £12 for the day or, if you’re old (like me), it’s all free after 9:30am. Just being on the bus is interesting enough, with lots of sea and village views and sharp right turns which makes me glad I’m not the one driving a long vehicle. You can also get the bus one way and then walk back along the coastal path to where you’re staying.

Hi,

This might be a bit of a post and run, for now. You’ll understand.

I live with my son, who is in his early twenties. We are extremely close. I have a daughter, who lives in the far north, who’s just finishing uni.

Yesterday morning the police came to the house. My son had been walking back to the village after staying with a friend. There was a RTC and he suffered extensive head/brain injuries. They drove me to the hospital in the nearest city.

He is in an induced coma but they said he won’t survive the injuries. My daughter came down. We came home from the hospital last night. We’re going again this morning, after ward round, and they envisage they will be switching off the life support either today or tomorrow.

I don’t know how to end this post. But wanted to tell you. I’m writing this sitting up in his bed. I think I might need the Blue Stocking more than ever as things settle, if they ever do.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2025 07:01

I’m so, so sorry. There’s no words that are adequate but we’re here for whatever small comfort we can offer.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/05/2025 07:04

Swashy, I am so terribly, terribly sorry. You have a safe place here, and Bluestocking love is with you and your son. X

Magpiecomplex · 19/05/2025 07:09

Oh Swashy. I'm thinking of you, and your family. Sending you love, and the traditional non-Mumsnetty hugs.

FarriersGirl · 19/05/2025 07:13

Oh my word Swashy I am so sorry. My thoughts will be with you today.

MyrtleLion · 19/05/2025 07:16

I an so sorry. What a terrible thing to have happened.

It feels a little trivial, but all of the gerbils, quokkas and Rosy, as well as the Giant Wombat will be available around the clock for support if you need it.

Sending love ❤️
