It’s been a while since I last saw everyone!

Welcome to everyone, regulars, lurkers, newly ventured in.

A place for women to discuss whatever takes their fancy, where the bar staff are attentive gerbils, Rosy the Red Panda is available for cuddles and all sweet things have no calories and all alcohol leaves the drinker slightly merry and hangover-free.

Hellooo everybody!!! Just returned from my daughters, absolute mayhem serious levels of sleep deprivation for all of us, baby balling on and of and toddler also lacking sleep and being unreasonable.

Went out for the day on a walk, husband decides to do one of them challenges, a row of logs you are supposed to hurdle over. As you can probably guess he fell at the last hurdle and hurt himself. What a twat, i could barely look, as he was doing it.

Daughter’s husband returned from three days locum, earning extra pennies to keep them afloat, has worked 14 days straight.

I managed to tidy up a bit , and he picked up the rope as soon as he walked through the door despite doing night shifts, what a star.

So back at home caught up on all the posts, and now doing an impression of a vegetable.

What a joy to be able to post when it takes my fancy.

Probably only Marie, and maybe Foxy, will understand this, but this evening's event, arranged weeks ago, is partly outdoors and we have Weather so I'm calling in last minute emergency help:

Yep, Deano, receiving you loud and clearSmile Hope 'The Child' does the trick!

Aaages ago -this thread moves so quickly! - you posted about two theme tunes- The Foxhunt played by Willie Clancy for Sionnach and The Minstrel Boy for ..somebody, plus a bonus points quiz question which I didn't have a clue about.

So I didn't get around to asking if I could have a bonus point for actually owning a copy of that Willie Clancy LP, and knowing all the words to The Minstrel BoyGrin

I think it's sad that I was probably the last generation of Irish kids to grow up 'absorbing' the words to Moore's Melodies - we never actually learnt them, it was osmosis or something. We had all that rich store of songs and music and shared references - Believe me if, The Moon Hath, Avenging and, Oft in the Stilly.. you didn't even need to finish the full titleSmile

AsWithGlad · 26/05/2025 19:02

@DeanElderberry , Child of Prague? St Medard? I hope the Weather is kind for you tonight.

@Magpiecomplex , do you have to mark work which arrives late without a good reason?

@inkymoose , all the best for your operation this week. I hope your recovery is swift and straightforward.

I had an MRI last week, which I was dreading for several reasons. Much detail omitted, but it was absolutely fine, everyone was very kind, and I even had my choice of music to listen to - Classic FM. As it was finishing the Parry anthem, “I Was Glad,” began.

Let’s hope inky’s hospital visit is blessed with many similar encouraging happinesses.

FuzzyPuffling · 26/05/2025 19:07

Aw, my DD1 had " I Was Glad" at her wedding. ( St M in the F, Trafalgar Square) . Beautiful piece.

Magpiecomplex · 26/05/2025 19:07

@AsWithGlad yes, I do, unfortunately. It's all assessed coursework so it counts towards their final grade. But if it's late without good reason they can only get a pass so the marking is doubly annoying because I have to pretend it wasn't late and then in the comments say "well, if you'd got your finger out or come up with a believable excuse you would have got a much better grade, but because you're lazy you have no one but yourself to blame". I'm paraphrasing, obviously 😂

MarieDeGournay · 26/05/2025 19:08

That's a lovely uplifting post, AsWith, I'm so glad you had good results from your MRISmile
Yes the statue is the Child of Prague, an image of the young Jesus dressed as royalty, brought to Prague by...some Spanish princess or another, sorry I've run out of historical facts.

For some reason in Ireland a tradition has grown up that if you want good weather - typically for a wedding - you place your statue of the Child of Prague under a hedge or a bush the night before, and you'll have good weather for your event. AllegedlyWink

Magpiecomplex · 26/05/2025 19:14

What sort of vegetable are you pretending to be, @Bannedontherun?

Bannedontherun · 26/05/2025 19:18

@Magpiecomplex a potato obvs😂

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2025 19:24

DD and I had a game where she had to impersonate various types of bean - baked, runner and jumping are obvious, I’ve forgotten what else and how they were depicted.

Myrtle my DH has a thing about hospitals too (was really happy when I opted to have a home birth with my youngest as a result).

He has no feeling in one of his thumbs as a result of not returning after stitching it up so has nerve damage (we were building/wiring up a dolls house for DD back in her girlie days). He is also walking around with a black thumb 9other hand) that he trapped in a door at work on Thursday, ignored because he was about to chair a meeting and currently cannot bend it properly. His argument is that he has broken most of his fingers and thumbs over the years playing cricket and he just taped it and carried on then too… 🤦🏽‍♀️

ETA, my DD only has to get a splinter and she is hysterical and fretting whether she needs to go to A&E/get antibiotics for a week afterwards…

Edited

I have just stuck a pin in the side of my finger, by the nail, where I had a whitlow. My poor finger was all red and hot and swollen, and now it is starting to feel better since I incised and drained the infection.

It’s one of the benefits of being a nurse - I live doing things like this, and I know how to do them safely and aseptically. I don’t actually do them aseptically, but I do know what I’m doing wrong.

Magpiecomplex · 26/05/2025 19:27

I'm wearing a frilly green skirt today, doing my best cabbage impression.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2025 19:35

This thread has given me a ‘Minstrel Boy’ earworm. It’s a bit annoying, I probably knew the words when I was a child (we used to sing around the piano, this was in a book with a charming pre-raphaelite style illustration of the boy) but can’t remember them all now.
One of Deano’s quiz answers must surely have been Miles O’Brien.

it is a very good earworm.

The Minstrel-boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you’ll find him;
His father’s sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him

“Land of song!” said the warrior-bard,
“Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!”

The Minstrel fell!—but the foeman’s chain
Could not bring his proud soul under;
The harp he loved ne’er spoke again,
For he tore its cords asunder;

And said, “No chains shall gully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the brave and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!”

Thomas Moore

I think @CautiousLurker01 husband probably has a break and an X-ray and a splint etc would put it right. This is why men die early! Fear of doctors, not bashed thumbs.

I like having the confidence to treat myself as well, but hopefully also the knowledge to go to the doctor when necessary. The nurse said the doctor might opt for steroids so as I have a tube of Dermovate, I’m using that tonight before I email the surgery tomorrow.

I’m also due at the minor injuries hospital tomorrow at 10.30 for a pre-assess clinic for my ankle fusion, but I still don’t have a date for the actual operation. And DSD’s blood pressure measurements and pulse have been sent in. She’s reduced her diastolic by eliminating the Pepsi Max, but she has enduring tachycardia, so I suspect I’ll also be driving her to the GP for an ECG.

An excellent game by the sound of it!
Broad, cannellini, kidney, butter, French, dwarf, green, navy, soya, Flageolet, Lima .... any more anymore?

Gosh there are a lot of injuries going on here this evening😦
I hope everybody recovers their full use of limbs/thumbs etc ASAP.

The Minstrel Boy is very stirring, isn't it Errol and Inky?
'Errol and Inky', that sounds good'Smile

That reminds me of a Jack and the Beanstalk joke.

Jack - What do you eat?
Giant - Man, ah eats beans
Jack - What sort of beans? Broad beans, runner beans, green beans….
Giant - Hooman beans!

AsWithGlad · 26/05/2025 20:52

@Magpiecomplex , don’t you wish you had a rubber stamp with a diplomatic version of
“well, if you'd got your finger out or come up with a believable excuse you would have got a much better grade, but because you're lazy you have no one but yourself to blame"
to save you writing it out over and over?

Now I wait for the report on the MRI, which I was initially told would probably take longer than the wait for the scan. 😮‍💨

Which prompts me to post another hopeless joke:

If a broad bean is a double-decker bus and a runner bean is a single-decker bus, what is a pea?

A relief.

EdithStourton · 26/05/2025 21:01

I've never known mine crack. He'd rather moan and whinge. Though he had some dental work recently and was given a painkiller, which seems to have <cough> worked. For him. And his special biology.

Inky, good luck for the OP.
And Glad, I hope the MRI results speed their way to you and are helpful.
