It’s been a while since I last saw everyone!

Welcome to everyone, regulars, lurkers, newly ventured in.

A place for women to discuss whatever takes their fancy, where the bar staff are attentive gerbils, Rosy the Red Panda is available for cuddles and all sweet things have no calories and all alcohol leaves the drinker slightly merry and hangover-free.

The Bluestocking Women's Pub, where brains can exist in a single state | Mumsnet

Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nons...

There is the Tell Us Once service, where you tell the government once and they inform everyone else.
When you register his death, the registrar will help you:
https://www.gov.uk/after-a-death/organisations-you-need-to-contact-and-tell-us-once

There is also the Death Notification Service which tries to do the same for commercial companies:
https://www.deathnotificationservice.co.uk/
Not everyone is signed up but it can help.
Apple are very good at closing accounts but you might want to appoint someone as a legacy contact so you don't lose stored photos and information in iCloud. They should help you.

If you can get a bank statement from his bank, that will help you find out regular payments. My brother spent a lot of money on lotteries so we were able to close his accounts and get some money back. Any payments like direct debits should not be taken from today because he is unable to authorise them, and should be refunded.
The "sadmin" is horrible part of it, though sometimes focusing on the routine helped stave off the overwhelming feelings.
Thinking of you x

What to do after someone dies

The steps you must take when someone dies - register a death, report a death with Tell Us Once, coroners, funerals and death abroad.

Oh Swash I'm crying for you. A friend went through this recently when her mum died. She said she'd heard all this described as 'sadmin'.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/05/2025 09:07

Sending you love Swashy. 💔

MarieDeGournay · 20/05/2025 09:13

Thank you for coming back to tell us the sad sad news of your dear son's passing. We were holding you in our thoughts, knowing that you were going to have to face that tragedy at some point during the day.

Sending you love and strength to get through these immediate awful days.
We'll be here long after, when the blur of loss and sorrow and admin is over and the painful finality settles in. We'll be here for you through it all, dear Swash.
Love to you and your daughter.💙

This poem is a son's poem about his beloved mother, but I read it at all my family funerals - aunties, uncles, mother, father - they all knew and loved this poem, and they also all knew the poet, Patrick Kavanagh, from seeing him around town.

In Memory Of My Mother

I do not think of you lying in the wet clay
Of a Monaghan graveyard; I see
You walking down a lane among the poplars
On your way to the station, or happily

Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday -
You meet me and you say:
'Don't forget to see about the cattle - '
Among your earthiest words the angels stray.

And I think of you walking along a headland
Of green oats in June,
So full of repose, so rich with life -
And I see us meeting at the end of a town

On a fair day by accident, after
The bargains are all made and we can walk
Together through the shops and stalls and markets
Free in the oriental streets of thought.

O you are not lying in the wet clay,
For it is a harvest evening now and we
Are piling up the ricks against the moonlight
And you smile up at us - eternally.

I haven't been into the Bluestocking for ages because stuff.

I am so shocked and saddened at your news, @Swashbuckled. I can't imagine what you and your daughter are going through. All my sympathies.

Boiledbeetle · 20/05/2025 09:40

@Swashbuckled

I cannot even begin to imagine the pain you are experiencing right now. I can offer no words of wisdom or platitudes of sorrow that would ever ease the suffering of even one solitary tear. So I shall just say I hope you find a peace in the memories, friends and things your beautiful son leaves behind.

Boiled xx

I am so, so sorry, @Swashbuckled - I wish there was more I could say or do. My heart is broken for you and your family.

Magpiecomplex · 20/05/2025 12:43

I hope no-one minds me sharing some good news today. Firstly, our garden at the famous garden show in London got a Silver Gilt medal! And secondly, I've got a new job!

lcakethereforeIam · 20/05/2025 12:48

Congratulations and congratulations 🎊 I'm so pleased for you. Especially about the job.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2025 12:49

Congratulations for both lots of good news, @Magpiecomplex!

Chersfrozenface · 20/05/2025 12:52

Congratulations on both counts, @Magpiecomplex!

Good news is exactly what we need, Magpie, so thank you for sharing yours. Congrats about 'your' garden [I suspect it's not 'yours' as in the patch of greenery out the back of your house, but hey that's what anonymous usernames are for and well done, anywaySmile].
But the new job is Pure Gold Medal news, ✨well done you✨
Our spirits are lifted, and our glasses are raised - congratulations, MagpieSmile
🍷

AsWithGlad · 20/05/2025 14:13

@Magpiecomplex , so pleased to hear about the new job, and the award-winning garden.

I do hope you will be very happy in both.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/05/2025 14:54

To our lovely Swashy, gentle hugs. My only advice would be to go with whatever your feelings are. Grieving is a very individual thing, so there's no wrong way to do it, and it's best not to keep things bottled up.

I'm so glad you have people around you who also knew and loved your wonderful son.

Fantastic news, Magpie, so proud of you! 🏅🏆

MarieDeGournay · 20/05/2025 16:49

I must remember to say this before your post disappears backwards into previous pages, Cher - it's nice to have you around again, though the timing is full of sadness for Swash.

I hope the 'stuff' that kept you away for a bit has resolved itself in whatever way it was best for it to be resolved!Smile

MyrtleLion · 20/05/2025 17:17

Wonderful news, @Magpiecomplex ! I’m so pleased you have a new job xx

Lovely to see you @Chersfrozenface , even under difficult circumstances.

I’ve been waiting nearly a month for a new book nook and it hasn’t arrived 😔 but
my current one is nearly finished.

This, apparently, is Myrtle drumming her fingers & surrounded by book nooks. At least she's female in this version.

There's an interesting BBC Sounds series looking at aspects of AI here:

if anyone needs a bit of distraction.

Two more hydrangea heads made this afternoon - assembling two takes me over 2.5 hours - 9 still to go. But I did listen to a very interesting programme about D H Lawrence, on Radio 4.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/05/2025 18:25

Well if you can't make a book nook you might as well spend your time learning a percussion instrument or two.

Magpie you're a star!. Of course, we knew that already.

Chersfrozenface · 20/05/2025 19:03

Thank you, @MyrtleLion and @MarieDeGournay. Stuff is still rumbling on but a bit more muted than it was.

However, I am still in the sort of mood where I've told a (real life) acquaintance on Facebook that I've had it with the gender bollocks he keeps spouting. I can't even be bothered to nuke unfriend, block him, whatever it is you do. Simply not worth the effort. (And breathe...)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2025 19:26

{{{hugs}}} @Chersfrozenface - that sort of thing is very stressful.

LarkLaneAgain · 20/05/2025 19:45

I'm so very sorry to read of the loss of your beautiful son @Swashbuckled
I'm thinking of you, and sending love. xxxx

LarkLaneAgain · 20/05/2025 19:50

@Chersfrozenface So sorry to see that you've been having an awful time of things, sending you a hug and love also. xxxx
