Yikes!

Gender Doesn’t Matter

This is a brilliantly written piece. Still reading it, but my goodness Naomi is incredible.

Wow, Naomi Cunningham absolutely eviscerated him. Brutal and brilliant.

Side note: I fancy a spare set of legs; anyone know where we can get them? The ones I have don’t work properly.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 15/05/2025 11:18

I read Norrie's piece (linked from NC's). I then read NC's response, and was pleased to see that she picked up on the things that nearly caused me to explode. My favourite was his "innumeracy" as NC called it - the idea that the chances of anyone meeting a certificated person is the ratio of certificated people to uncertificated people, as if we don't each meet thousands of people.

What a poorly argued article from Norrie. If you can become a Professor (emeritus) with such poor reasoning skills, why are most of us not highly regarded academics? Did I miss my school's explanation of the best pathway to success?

Well done Strathclyde for letting both sides speak. Although you've earned an eyeroll for 'don't hurt me' disclaimer at the start. It's almost certainly not people labelled GC whose wrath they're fearful of.

This bit

Norrie’s use of the words “chutzpah” and “shame” is disquieting. A tiny grassroots women’s pressure group took on the whole might of the Scottish Government (backed by a great weight of confident legal expertise) in defence of women’s basic rights, and won. “Courage” and “pride” would be more apt.

❤️

Sally Hines is a professor.

Damn she’s good. ❤️❤️❤️ Naomi

If you are using an internet browser, the url (web address) should show in the top bar of your browser.
You just copy and paste that.
What browser do you use ( chrome, firefox, edge etc)?

If you're on some app, it might be different.

sorry, yes i know that. I don't know if it's my settings or it's a new thing (I encounter it all the time) that you have to find a link.

If they give the link in the share option - all well and good. If there is no share option i don't have the faintest clue how to do it, since the link from the address bar turns into the headline of the article/webpage.

Sally Hines is a professor.

Yes, but there are limits to how far I would have been willing to embarrass myself in the interests of high academic status and bags of gold!

Mmmnotsure · 15/05/2025 11:40

From Naomi's piece:
If women would only be good and obedient, men wouldn’t have to get angry with them.

WithSilverBells · 15/05/2025 11:43

Superb. Thanks OP

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/05/2025 11:50

She's killed him stone dead!! 😂😂

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 15/05/2025 12:04

For the burn.

ladymalfoy45 · 15/05/2025 12:19

That was biblical.

MookieCat · 15/05/2025 12:24

I loved the very logical approach. You can see why she is such a great Barrister.

EmpressaurusKitty · 15/05/2025 12:24

I can’t believe Norrie used the line about everyone having gender neutral toilets in their homes.

LittleGreenDuck · 15/05/2025 12:28

Wonderful!

KnottyAuty · 15/05/2025 12:28

Who encouraged this chap to write a blog post on a subject for which he was entirely unqualified and ill equipped? Getting the PCs wrong for starters undermines his whole argument... It's one thing to be out of your depth but to go into print and reveal it to everyone... ouch... Emeritus Professor possibly for reasons obvious to see. I'm embarrassed for him.

For one awful nanosecond I thought you had written 'literally' eviscerated him!

Fortunately we don't use TRA-speak, where 'literally' means literally everything except 'literally.' Literally.

Sorry I have no legs to spare, I'd happily share with you if I had an extra pairSmile

MassiveWordSalad · 15/05/2025 12:46

Thank you to Naomi as always.

Her points make sense, they have always made sense, but women matter so little that it has been possible to overlook the law and the truth in the name of ideology. I’m just having one of those moments again where I think “is this really happening??” 😟 I was watching the Handmaid’s Tale recently and thinking - again - that Gilead is not a far-fetched idea.

HermioneWeasley · 15/05/2025 12:49

She’s brilliant

Swashbuckled · 15/05/2025 12:56

”trans-identifying men who suffer the trauma of puzzled looks”

🤣

Margaret Atwood said when The Handmaid’s Tale was published that everything in the book was based on real life examples.

Taytoface · 15/05/2025 13:15

Fucking hell Naomi. She clearly had 3 shredded wheat the morning she wrote that

VeraWangTea · 15/05/2025 13:26

Fantastic writing, wish I could be this articulate when trying to put my views across.

I am puzzled why people don’t ’get it’.

And angered at those that do and either don’t care or want to use it to their advantage.

orangegato · 15/05/2025 13:29

This needs to be read in Parliament.

TheOtherRaven · 15/05/2025 13:39

Still reading but came across this gem and had to pick it out as one of the key things to keep repeating (and repeating, and repeating, possibly in our sleep)

the use of a space or service by one trans-identifying man will make it mixed-sex, and so deprive all actual or potential female users of genuinely single-sex provision — in other words all the relevant women’s privacy and dignity (and potentially safety) will have been violated usually for the benefit of one man

And this obviously fails any 'proportionality'.
