Connie Shaw is in touch with a Dundee uni student who must have run out of fucks.

having Maggie Chapman starting as rector would do that to you.

Can you post the thread for those not on X?

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 07/05/2025 18:39

(Sorry - should add, I’m very curious to see what they have to say. Poor Dundee is in the wars at the moment - having MC foisted on them is…well let’s say an interesting way to solve their problems.)

C&P from X:
The University of Dundee ignores the law and female student who wants her rights protected by her university An anonymous medical student at the University of Dundee has blown the whistle in response to the Dundee University Student’s Association’s appalling statement on the UKSC ruling. The letter was sent to the university and the medical school on 21 April.

The student explains she has been bullied and intimidated for her gender critical beliefs, which is why she is too afraid to put her name next to the complaint.

(Contd.)
The student explains how the DUSA’s statement is ideological and not representative of all students. She fears for her safety if she were to express her gender critical views on campus. Maggie Chapman MSP, who accused the UKSC of bigotry, is the newly elected rector of UoD. The student requested a public response from the University stating that they will not tolerate abused towards those with gender critical views.

(Contd.)
The student also requested the University states how it will uphold the law regarding single sex spaces for female students.

They will not make any policy changes until there is ‘updated statutory guidance’. It would seem they are getting advice from Stonewall who continue to lie about the law. They reaffirm their commitment to making sure trans people feel welcome at university. Nothing about women.

(Contd.)
Further support is offered to students who might be concerned about their ‘sex, gender reassignment or gender identity’. The letter is signed off by an ‘EDI’ specialist.

Except a student DID ask for the University to explain how it will uphold her right to single sex spaces and freedom to express her gender critical views. Either
@dundeeuni
has chosen to deliberately ignore this female student’s letter, further proving her point about the attitude towards gender critical views, or they do not believe women should have the right to ever be free from the presence of men, not even when they undress.

Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g!

Thanks for posting this OP.

It's actually quite a relief that there are still some students who can think for themselves and have the courage to stand up to the braying mob.

DD is at an age when she's considering whether to go to Uni a d at the moment my gut feeling is, stay away from those pits of stupidity abd group think.

Excellent comments on the Nitter thread.

FiveBarGate · 08/05/2025 08:11

While I applaud the student for calling this out, this is a statement from the students association rather than the university.

And they are always mad. I'm not saying this isn't still problematic but it is important to note that it's not coming from Dundee uni as a whole.

They operate separately and while they feed into policy, they don't set it.

It is positive to see students themselves challenging the body meant to represent them (sadly the students associations are usually very political and rarely represent the majority of students who just want to get on and study).

Noonehastheanswer · 08/05/2025 08:22

The reply is from the university though - saying they won’t change anything until they get further guidance and missing any expression of support for women. So I don’t think you can dismiss this as just the mad student union.

Dundee is the most financially exposed of the Scottish unis.

Crackerjacked · 08/05/2025 08:24

That’sa good point @FiveBarGate and yours too @Noonehastheanswer . What are the implications of Dundee being financially exposed?

Igmum · 09/05/2025 17:19

Well that was a great opportunity for whoever their (highly paid) VC is to earn their salary and stress that both women and trans people are supported. Opportunity missed in favour of painting a ‘please sue us we have no intention of following the law’ sign on themselves.

My admiration goes to that medical student who is facing a tough time.

Well Sussex university was fined £585k for failing to uphold free speech so if you’re financially constrained you wld think you’d be a bit careful about avoiding a similar fine. (Amongst the many things that are wrong/annoying about this whole debacle is the amount of public money that is squandered on it.)

Good grief, the sheer nerve and arrogance they display is shocking, isn't it? They have stated that they are going to continue breaking the actual law, along with the interim guidance as to what the law means, until the full guidance is published!

It's essentially a confession.
