You have to scroll down for it. You might not like her politics but she does have a degree, was an MP, education minister, and a deputy whip (mentioned much further down the article)!

It’s not been a good week for the Beeb, has it?! There’s more than of a whiff of petulance about their reporting recently.

MoltenLasagne · 02/05/2025 14:33

She worked at Greggs at 16 and has decades of other work since - this is clearly an intentionally low blow from the BBC. I wonder if they'd do the same to a male candidate, "former shelf stacker at Asda and amateur goalie"? I doubt it.

exactly.

The article mentions Greggs twice. I mean I enjoy a sausage, bean and cheese bake as much as the next woman but the writer comes over as borderline obsessed

and as for this, blimey. Someone is pretty disdainful of her aren’t they?

A former Greggs worker and Miss UK finalist, Dame Andrea will now control an annual budget of £24m and hold powers over skills, transport and economic development in the region.

SquirrelSoShiny · 02/05/2025 14:53

I hope she makes a formal complaint. The misogyny is dripping out of them. I really want to keep funding them but they're making it increasingly impossible.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 02/05/2025 14:54

I’m a former processed meat factory worker and failed clarinetist

does that mean any responsibility I have should be viewed with concern?

Pleasantsort · 02/05/2025 14:55

They are absolute misogynists.

IDareSay · 02/05/2025 16:30

Very pleased to see Rosie Duffield calling this out on X. Whatever your view of Dame Andrea, this is simply petty sexist piggery from the BBC.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/05/2025 16:46

That’s really shitty.

miraxxx · 02/05/2025 16:50

It is more class and political disdain than sexism. They would never do this to a poorly educated or qualified Labour candidate.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/05/2025 16:53

BBC are shocking

murasaki · 02/05/2025 16:54

I can't stand the woman but that is appalling misogyny.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/05/2025 16:56

James Cleverly has called it out on X too.

I don’t like her politics and I’d been fine if they’d challenged her on that but this is a cheap shot.

Childrenofthestones · 02/05/2025 17:06

When the handfull of female bbc presenters took the bbc to task over their wages not matching some of the men due to sexism and won, Stef McGovern pointed out they were mostly privately educated and then attended to top universities. She said the wage gap at the BBC was sexism, but was, is and always will be classism.
After this she was treated like a fart in a lift for some time .

Childrenofthestones · 02/05/2025 17:08

(wasn't sexism)

RawBloomers · 02/05/2025 17:31

I dont’ know if they’ve edited it since this was posted but I’m not outraged by it. They mention her being a Dame and an MP before they mention Greggs or the beauty contest and it’s in the context of her having risen from ordinary beginnings to become an MP who has a knack for winning against the odds.

I suspect this is taken from her own press notes - Reform appeals to many working class voters and she is playing up her credentials as being a no-nonsense northern woman who understands her constituents because she knows what it’s like to work normal jobs and isn’t a snob about things like beauty contests. It’s total on brand isn’t it?

They have deleted the post on X. There was absolutely no mention of her being a Dame or an MP in that post:

They've still got some tidying up to do:
