New petition wanting to remove protected beliefs

They’d like Parliament to override the judgement from Maya’s case 🙄.

(Unsurprising that most signatories are in Brighton).

I'm conflicted! This is patently a bonkers petition but I find myself wanting it to hit 10,000 just to see what the government respond with!

Can we not report these sorts of nonsense petitions when they are calling for things that are unlawful or are just a waste of everyone's time?

None from my area either. Student life was much simpler in my day - people stood outside the union with petitions to bring down the price of cider and black to 50p, and they got their responses that way.

I'm half tempted to sign it, just to get it debated

Its gloriously bonkers, that they don't seem to recognise how they are petitioning to restrict other people's freedom of thought and belief, is just the icing on the cake.

Another Marty McFly example of a paradox that erases your own interests, own identity and own protections.

Also one thats utterly impossible to legislate in the way they wish.

The protected characteristic they fall under is gender reassignment (inc those going through the process) - not gender identity. This matters.

If they can't get the basic wording right, they are doomed to fail. Thats fine by me.

D'you think Brighton will implode and disappear off the face of the earth when we all go there for the FiLIA conference?

We think removing the protection of the Equality Act for "gender critical beliefs" could better protect trans, non-binary and gender diverse people. It could support organisations to properly protect this marginalised community, whose rights we believe are currently being attacked and politicised.

They do realise that this is impossible under UK law without leaving the ECHR...

I thought we couldn't repeal the GRA for the same reason of not without leaving the ECHR - which at the time (admittedly five minutes ago) was bad?

What, people who want to take away freedom of conscience from others? Those sorts of people?

We can repeal the GRA - many of the reasons for it no longer exist.
We can put in mitigations for alternative solutions to any remaining issues if we wanted.

We can't ban beliefs though. Because they fall under Human Rights protected under the Human Rights Act and the ECHR. (The Human Rights Act is central to membership of the ECHR).

This is why when the Tories wanted to get rid of the Human Rights Act they hit a problem. It's encoded into our membership of the ECHR, Devolution of NI, Scotland and Wales, and ECHR membership is a pre requisite of EU trade deals.

So good luck with that one.
