Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
Proudtobeanortherner · 01/05/2025 07:31

Not again, why can’t they just accept that women’s right to safety is enshrined in law. I wish the government/newspapers would use their platforms to educate people about the laws that are already in place to protect (any) minority groups and specifically here, campaign for third spaces (toilets, changing rooms, etc), discuss options for sports, etc..
They all seem to be waiting for women to back down so that they can return to their old ways of misogynistic doing as they please at women’s expense 🥺🤷‍♀️😡

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/05/2025 07:34

I bet that not one of the signatories has actually read the judgment.

Nicola Coughlan in particular really needs to butt out, along with anyone else on that list who isn't British.

famous blokes wanting to give away womens single sex spaces that keep women safe.

famous blokes prioritising the safety of biological males who identify as trans women.

There are lots of women on that list too.

Have there ever been any other letters of denunciation against other writers like Gaiman? A cursory google of ‘Polanski petition’ piqued my interest, especially as signatories included woody Allen, told a Swinton and Martin Scorsese, but surprise surprise - it’s calling for his release after he was arrested for sexual abuse allegations.

Interesting perspective of Natalie Portman who regretted signing the letter in support of Polanski www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/natalie-portman-i-very-regret-signing-roman-polanski-petition-1086690/

heffalumpwoozle · 01/05/2025 07:37

I really wish that Harry Potter wasn't caught up in all this, from either side.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/05/2025 07:39

I just can't bear these overprivileged celebrities, who, whether they are a man or a woman, will never have to use a public toilet or a domestic violence shelter or a rape crisis service in their life, telling ordinary women where their boundaries should be. The male ones don't even have the incredibly remote risk of being sent to prison and having to share space with a convicted sex offender twice their size.

Fuck them in their ivory towers, telling ordinary and vulnerable women where their boundaries should be.

No, she’s saying he signed this petition.

I think it was a joke

How embarrassing for them.

Just makes it easier to avoid their work a nd any not buy any media they are in.

Actors always overestimate their own intelligence and importance...

Don't they just. They learn lines and get dressed up and suddenly they're Malala Yousafzai.

ChkChkBoom · 01/05/2025 07:21

The types who think social media reflects reality. The notion of looking beyond twitter trends, in order to inform themselves, is alien to them.

I agree; this is the root of the problem. Too many people assume that what’s on Facebook, Twitter, instagram and so on then it is all true. It’s no different from people assuming that if it’s written down in a newspaper, it must be fact.
I find it disrespectful to women and interesting, all at the same time, just how quiet the government is being. They’ve got the ruling so now they need to support it.

All aboard the 'We hate JKR bandwagon' if you need a bit of publicity, haven't done very well with an acting career or just need to get your name in the media. Who cares if the clarification will protect women and children, call it disgusting and get your pic in the paper as much as possible.

Yeah they hate her soooo much but they are still quite happy to allow her to pay their bills for them.

Of course they may all have chosen to give up any revenue that comes off the back of featuring in HP and made a donation equivalent to their original fee to a (presumably trans) charity of their choice, but I'm pretty sure we'd have heard about that by now.

Much like their grasp of biology, their principles are looking pretty sketchy too.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/05/2025 08:09

The choice of wording in the letter itself is quite revealing - “this is our opportunity to be on the right side of history” 🙄

TheaBrandt1 · 01/05/2025 10:06

The comment section on the daily Mail website is funny unanimous that they are pointless luvvies who haven’t got a clue. Whatever you may think of that paper its the view of the majority

James Norton and Eddie Redmayne haven’t done very well? Bit of a stretch.

It’s amazing what private school, Oxbridge, being white and male can do for a person. It would be more of a story if they hadn’t ‘done well’..

AlecTrevelyan006 · 01/05/2025 10:16

The worst thing about that list is that it’s not in alphabetical order. Or indeed, any kind of order. Makes it very hard to read.

Thought the same. They couldn’t do that could they, what with N and R being so far down an alphabetical list..

Yes, there are about five people on the list who anyone has heard of.

Lottapianos · 01/05/2025 10:23

The level of stupidity involved in the backlash against this judgement has been breathtaking, and this is just the latest example. My god it's exhausting. Its just so STUPID. Every one of these people should have 'I am a sheep' on a sign hung around their necks

This sprang irresistibly to mind.

…And yet, and yet, my actors stood
Waiting in serried ranks.
Thank God, I thought, that actors are
As thick as two short planks.

Hang on, I thought the correct title for someone acting is an actor? I thought the title actress was outdated? 🤯 Slight derail, sorry, but it seems gendered terms are ok when describing one's occupation.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/05/2025 10:57

Gendered terms came roaring back when trans became a thing.

"and Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan, who previously said she was “disgusted” by the ruling."

This one is really bothering me. What on earth is there to be disgusted about, they've simply confirmed that a woman is a woman? Confused

My mind is absolutely boggled by people with her attitude.

Another straight woman muscling in on a community that's nothing to do with her. Quite a lot of straight and non-trans people who cross the line from 'ally' into 'speaking for".

TeiTetua · 01/05/2025 15:36

Was there anyone among the crowd who when the call came, refused to step forward? It would be interesting if that happened, and what the rest of them did about it. Like the blackleg miner, maybe.

"Jo won’t care at all', MailOnline's source said when asked about Paapa’s decision to sign the letter.
‘She knows how powerful Harry Potter is and it’s bigger than its cast. She knows she’s going to come against criticism but she is now uncancelable.
‘For her it’s business as usual’, which is to ‘continue to build the Harry Potter brand’ while supporting women’s rights, the insider added.

A favourite bit

It came as trans activists turned on Paapa, accusing him of virtue-signalling because he has not quit the show inspired by the books of their bête noire, branding his stance 'plain hollow'.

Oh dear, what a shock - almost like nothing is ever enough for these people

JK Rowling 'doesn't care' about new Harry Potter star's defiance

Paapa Essiedu has signed a letter standing 'in solidarity' with members of the LGBT + community 'impacted' by the Supreme Court gender ruling.
