Lib Dem spokesperson for Women and Equalities. Guess she doesn’t care so much about the “women” part of that title, eh? 🙄

Please give examples, as I don't understand what you mean by this: 'the nature of the debate and triumphalism'.

Smiling, laughing, cheering, champagne, saying "we won", expressing relief that all the years of obliteration of women's rights, identity and language coming to an end?
Sisterhood, solidarity and speaking ?
Oh - and most of these?

No wonder I didn't understand it, what you have listed looks like perfectly reasonable reactions to me.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/04/2025 14:55

No it's 'vitriol' according to someone who thinks we aren't being kind enough.

Ah! American pie, good song that.

When Don Maclean was asked about the meaning of 'American Pie' he said "It means that I will never have to work again"😀

So we have progressed from 'no debate' to 'both sides' - and all the while, mammals could not change sex - and now the Supreme Court confirms that sex in the EA2010 means sex, not a certificate. Where is this 'unreasonable minority' in the sex realist side?

There are many perfectly reasonable views. One of which is the conclusion reached by the Supreme Court. The court ruled specifically on the definition of biological sex in legislation.

It's the surrounding polarised debate about how this could be implemented or what it actually means that is so damaging in the opinion of many of us. People have becomes so 'competitive' about rights and so lacking in compassion for 'others'.

Unless I have missed the posts, literally no one on these boards has any empathy or interest for how terrifying the current situation is for trans folks. I am a woman (and mum) but clearly not welcome here.

But I guess we will all continue in our echo chambers...

FlowchartRequired · 28/04/2025 15:06

You have missed the posts. There are also many parents and siblings of trans identified people on this board, and they most certainly do not hate their much-loved family members, and they are very unhappy about how the law has been misrepresented.

What is this polarised debate and why is it polarised? We say, follow the law and keep single spaces single sex, while making provision for those who should not use those spaces. That’s perfectly straightforward and quite easily resolved. Yes, it might cost money but surely we shouldn’t begrudge transpeople some extra funds to make them comfortable?

It’s the “other side” moaning and wailing and saying it’s so difficult. It isn’t.

Unfortunately for the Trans-folk and Trans-maidens, they were totally uninterested in listening to women never mind allowing us to even discuss our rights, they are now experiencing the consequences.

C’est la vie…

TheOtherRaven · 28/04/2025 15:16

How it could be implemented?

Well, men stay out. And they either use men's spaces (which they may perceive as mixed sex) just as they required women to do for years, or require other mixed sex spaces to be provided. They'll cope. It's not rocket science.

It's so damaging?

Well, not to women it isn't. And mixed sex spaces are not damaging either. If men are damaged by not being allowed to use women or have a law saying they are biological women, then unfortunately it's the time of therapeutic support, because women aren't resources for them to use. We tried it. It didn't work for women.Women aren't support animals for men and they don't and SHOULD NOT HAVE lesser rights in law than men.

Find solutions that do not involve harming women and commandeering them and their resources.

RhannionKPSS · 28/04/2025 15:17

Get over yourself, we women want our stuff back! My friends and I will celebrate how we want after the years & years of vitriol and abuse many of us women in Scotland have had to deal with !

Please can you explain exactly what is so terrifying about having it confirmed that all of us have the same sex based rights?

Surely this is what fairness looks like?

TheOtherRaven · 28/04/2025 15:18

If anyone's arguing that it's damaging for women to not be undressed in spaces with men btw, they'll be able to undress with men in the mixed sex spaces to their hearts content as they consent to.

And the women who don't consent will have equal access to a usable space without harassment and punishment.

I suspect it's the whole idea of women existing with a lack of harassment and punishment that is the part that's really choking many.

Parents need to take that up with Stonewall , LGBT Youth Scotland and all the other organizations who lied to the families

TheOtherRaven · 28/04/2025 15:19

I'd love some examples of the 'compassion' shown by the GI lobby and men in women's spaces towards women btw when they were being raped, assaulted, harassed, excluded, told to 'learn to cope', re traumatised etc.

Even one would surprise me. The faintest shadow of giving a fuck would surprise me. Why do you think women fought this for years through court?

They do indeed. My heart goes out to kids in particular who have now got to deal with being told that they are not in fact the sex they were told they were, and they can no longer use those spaces, because they were encouraged in this belief.

But I am more sorry for the girls, and would not deny those girls their rights, equality, privacy, dignity. They are entitled to these things regardless of how distressing it may be to boys.

Yes, funny how the Bad Women were emoting incorrectly, using non-approved words, gathering nefariously and discussing in poor tones, and are now being told off for insufficiently empathising.

And we're supposed to ignore/forget the years of harassment, bullying, threatening of jobs, violent physical and sexual threats, actual piss.

And yet pointing out that this looks an awful lot like there's one set of special real humans and one set of partially-sentient service bipeds is exhibiting "hatred" Hmm

What a load of vitriol and 'whataboutery' on Mumsnet today! I sincerely hope this does not represent everyone on here...

The problem that some women have with some men is undoubtedly real. But trans-folk in general are not the right target.

In fact even taking a 'women first' stance, this solves little, whilst it certainly makes life more terrifying for those decent trans men (biologically women) and trans women (biologically men) who you want to use toilets mismatched to their gender-presentation, for example, despite them perhaps up I til now being able to live without having to constantly 'out' themselves. When a male-identifying person comes in to your women-only space, you are no further forward in terms of being able to challenge (if that's what you want to do).

If the aim of law and legislation is to minimise harm, then the trans community needs protecting (and given the vitriol here we can see why). Anyone with trans friends will be aware of a litany of assaults, abuse and discrimination that trans people experience. Up until now trans folks have tended to use spaces where they 'pass' best where they can for very obvious reasons.

There is very little evidence that trans women (biological men) as a whole are disproportionately dangerous to women. Of course some are (as are other non-trans men and women). Whereas there is abundant evidence that non-trans women and men are abusive to trans folks, particularly trans women.

It is not a competition!!. Women's rights to safety are not in opposition to trans folks rights to safety. The triumphalism and hatred displayed in some of these mumsnet posts today seem to me to completely miss a human response, and fly in the face of evidence too.

Whether someone accepts or not the court's conclusion (that sex means biological sex) the priority now must be minimising harm for all, which requires much less demonising and rabble rousing.

Of course I expect that for me right now too....

“ Trans “ people have the same rights they always have, it’s not women who are the issue here, it’s the organizations like Stonewall, LGBT Youth Scotland etc who misled and lied. Women & children need our rights and safeguarding.

TheOtherRaven · 28/04/2025 15:28

Sorry for over posting, this absolutely infuriates me.... 'damaging'

It WAS damaging for women. IT HAS BEEN damaging for women. The purpose of getting this law clarified was to STOP THE DAMAGE TO WOMEN.

There are no extremists on our side of the debate. It's a bit like saying there are "extremists" who believe the earth is round. The worst you can say about us is that many of us are fed up with arguing with lunatics, and we may roll our eyes a bit.

Is it true that the Libs got £1.5 million from Ferring, puberty blocker manufacturers? If so, it would explain everything.

Trans women have the same offending rates as any men, and it is absurd to think that it is my job to shield them from male violence by giving up my rights.

It would be more useful to persuade men to be more accommodating but no that never happens.

And I'm not setting the bar at outright sexual assault. Dignity and privacy matter to women. I have encountered trans women in toilets and it causes me to feel deeply unsafe at a visceral level.

And there is no way women should have to put up with this. Men need to step up. We are not asked to shield autistic men, men with special needs disabled men. Only the trans ones somehow. It is not OK.
