No real surprises on there. The usual intellectual lightweights and luvvies.

Did you recognise many names? I only recognised a couple of comedians and the dr who writer. I was starting halfway through the list to think they'd just made up names on the spot.

Molto · 21/04/2025 16:41

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 21/04/2025 16:18

I am also 99% sure that at least a handful of names who I know quite vaguely on that list are highly, highly GC.

So why on earth have they signed it?

Book sales, album sales, contracts, not wanting to fall out with your trans child...

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 21/04/2025 16:42

Do we know who actually organised the letter?

QuietlyLurkingintheCorner · 21/04/2025 16:42

PriOn1 · 21/04/2025 16:14

Erin Hunter is on there! Erin Hunter doesn’t actually exist…🤔

Gillian Philip, one of the former Erin Hunters would undoubtedly not agree!

See also 'Holly Webb', 'author' of the Rainbow Magic series, my 7 year old daughter's favourite books. But it's a conglomerate of writers who come and go, so who put the name in? The publisher? Or did all the current writers get together and agree to sign as one? Bloody cheat either way.

Billy Bragg is identifying as a writer, now?

Not surprised at all Nicola is on it, Sister Michael would roll her eyes but not convinced about the actress who plays her would too.

You are correct, she is a fully fledged TRA.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 21/04/2025 16:46

DH and I spend a lot of money annually on books, especially at Christmas (probably thousands between us), and are very regular theatregoers.

Thanks for sharing this list - I will make sure we don’t contribute a penny to these misogynists.

Molto · 21/04/2025 16:49

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 21/04/2025 16:28

I'm disappointed to see Nikesh Shukla on that list. I have a copy of The Good Immigrant.

Surely, he can understand that a woman can no more identify out of sex-based oppression than someone visibly brown can identify out of racial oppression? And a man trying to pretend that he's a woman is as offensive to women as blackface is to Black people?

Some people in the arts industry do well because they are breathtakingly creative and hard-working with their immense talent. Other people do well because they work hard at making connections with social media figures with big follower numbers, then build a career off pleasing those followers.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 21/04/2025 16:53

Let’s not forget that some people in these industries are actors and storytellers. They’re good at playing the part and spinning a tale. They’re immersed in a world of fantasy.

Talkinpeace · 21/04/2025 16:54

a) Good Law Project have never actually won a case

b) Both Amnesty and the Scottish Government barristers spoke up for trans rights - but badly

c) Stonewall actively chose not to intervene

Apologies, my perimenopausal brain got Holly Webb muddled with Daisy Meadows. Holly Webb is indeed a person, so can take full responsibility for adding her name to the stupid letter 😄

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 21/04/2025 17:16

Didn't Holly Webb do those books about a girl who goes to live with her uncle in a magic pet shop with talking animals? If so we never got to the end of the series because DD found them boring.

Still on that train, Warrior? 🤣

I still seem to be time looping 😆

PurpleChrayn · 21/04/2025 17:25

Mostly no-marks. Quel surprise.

lcakethereforeIam · 21/04/2025 17:26

James Oswald is a Scottish author and farmer, ffs. I've read some of his books. Iirc there is a tw (wise, saintly, living quietly, of course, gets on great with the grizzled, damaged detective lead) who's a minor character.

I suspect some of these folx might have been put on the spot and felt unable to say no.

WarriorN · 21/04/2025 17:38

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 21/04/2025 16:42

My guess is someone in the first few names and perhaps has links to JM

yes I suspect so in some circumstances. Perhaps went round blue sky?

You’re thinking of Daisy Meadows. Holly Webb writes quite sweet books about animals - Chocolate Dog and the like. My DD loved them.

' The signatories of this letter attest to the fact that writers with a bioessentialist view of womanhood and a binary view of sex and gender are in the minority.'

That's some assertion.

Add the population of men in to that as well, and those TRA numbers will be so small as to not register.

JeremiahBullfrog · 21/04/2025 18:16

People are perfectly free to lobby Parliament for changes to the law. Trying to pressure judges to interpret the law the way you'd like it to be makes you look rather anti-democratic. Sadly this is how Americans do things nowadays and this lot absolutely worships any rubbish that comes out of the American left.

FrippEnos · 21/04/2025 18:28

Unfortunately there are some notable names that have been prevented from publishing and blacklisted as having GC leanings.

I wonder how many of these people truly believe what they have signed, or are signing to protect themselves?

Windscreenviper · 21/04/2025 19:01

AlexandraLeaving · 21/04/2025 13:38

Ageism, the one truly enduring acceptable -ism.

"We’re completely erased from the conversation and when we are invited to talk, it’s always framed as a ‘debate’. But when you frame trans rights as a debate, you’re starting from an anti-trans point of view,” said Gabriel."

I don't understand this statement. I think it's begging the question.

Anyway, I read the letter, and there were a few links incorporated, with one being about 186% increase in violent crimes against trans people in the last five years. Being interested to discover what this meant, I followed the link and it took me a Stonewall page where there was no information at all about what this meant. It didn't define what it meant by violent crime, and it didn't give examples.

I don't like the thought that there is a huge increase in violent crime against anybody. I dislike the idea that people are suffering violent crimes because of the way they look or the way they think. But if a statement such as that is going to be released then there needs to be information and analysis to enable proper understanding. Rhetoric just doesn't cut it.

Fordian · 21/04/2025 19:03

Actually, I’ve just about never heard of any of them!

Sorry to be a pedant but the "author" of Rainbow Magic is Daisy Meadows which is a conglomerate. Holly Webb is the author of many many many animal books such as The Lost Kitten etc and I think she might be a real person
