Why have the government not commented on the Supreme Court ruling yet?

The silence is deafening. What's going on?

You would have thought they'd have prepared statements for either eventuality, even just a holding statement.

It's making me nervous.

Easter break.

It's a complicated judgment, its consequences need careful thought and although others have rushed to draw conclusions it's not wise for the government itself to do so.

Shocked that the court never went along with gaslighting British women

The government has made themselves look like prize idiots over this fiasco. Allowing womens prisons to become mixed sex, allowing a dangerous ideology to infiltrate our schools and universities....the fact so many men in positions of power have stated trans women are women-it's just embarrassing for them. Heads should roll but they won't.

But surely even just a holding statement saying they note the ruling and are considering the implications is appropriate ?

John Swinney has commented.

They have commented - Bridget Phillipson who is lead Equalities Minister made a bland statement about their support for single-sex spaces.

If they are facing a substantial rebellion about proposed changes to disability benefits they may be temperature checking.

There are probably strategic decisions to be made about the number of fronts on which they can fight.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 19/04/2025 15:40

We were told yesterday that Keir Starmer has always supported women’s single-sex spaces. He may be keeping quiet today, hoping everyone’s forgotten about “99.7% of women don’t have penises” (or whatever the supposed number was).

But actually I don’t care. I welcome anyone on board who accepts reality and respects women’s rights.

Nice if the returners (de-misogynists?) admit it was all a male supremacist power play, or that they pretended to believe TWAW because they were scared of losing their jobs or their friends.

But even if they don’t, as long as they stop harassing women and and stealing our things (language, sports, privacy etc), I’m OK to work with them and possibly even vote for them.

We have, obviously, always been at war with Eurasia.

At least one minister has said on a TV interview (Thursday am, BBC) that they were working flat out with legal teams going through the guidance and the EHRC are doing the same, as they have to work out what this means and be clear on it. This could and should mean massive national policy change.

I'd think there's also a lot of headless chickening going on because they have been caught with their pants right down, and many MPs and Civil Servants were very happy with the status quo of a foggy incomprehensible law that permitted men to trample women while still being able to claim that the law said it worked for everyone. Frantic ways to wriggle out of it will be being sought.

JoanOgden · 19/04/2025 16:29

I actually think they'll do as little as possible. The EHRC will provide updated guidance and is the regulator, so the government will just refer any queries there.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/04/2025 16:38

They'll say as little as possible. Even Phillipson's statement about "always supported the protection of single sex spaces" was evidently a lie that was immediately challenged with repeated evidence to the contrary.
From the PM down, too many of them have beclowned themselves with all their nonsense trans witterings. Starmer couldn't even say "single sex", only able to mutter "safe spaces".
They'll keep quiet, meet in secret with all the lobby groups and once they think the storm has blown over will usher in a safeguarding busting conversion therapy bill.

Well as I feared the front page of the daily record claims that the government plan to defy the Supreme Court ruling. I'm furious.
