A thread to gather politicians' responses to yesterday's Supreme Court judgement.

  1. Stella Creasy. She's rather unhelpfully posted a pdf, (and turned off replies), so archive below.

Light and heat..... has anyone yet managed to pin down what a speaker actually means when they pop that one out?

It's the modern version of supercalifragalistic.

Hopefully we've seen the back of that one. How much more light can they want than a very through judgement delivered by five Supreme Court Justices?

Unless they're now waiting for the second coming and the ultimate pronouncement on whether God thinks women have a penis.

Joint Statement from the Political Committee of the Communist Party, the Central Committee of the Young Communist League, the CP & YCL Women’s Commissions on the UK Supreme Court ruling that "sex" means biological sex in the Equality Act 2010.

We welcome the Supreme Court's clarification that "sex" means biological sex in the Equality Act 2010 in the case For Women Scotland Ltd (Appellant) v The Scottish Ministers (Respondent) 16 April 2025. The Supreme Court judgement was decided on the basis that the only coherent legal interpretation of the provisions defined in the Equality Act relating to sex discrimination was by reference to biological sex, upholding women's legal right to single-sex provision in employment, education facilites, sports, prisons, etc This materialist outcome corroborates our view that “sex” must mean biological sex for the purposes of the Act and any other interpretations would negate its single sex statutory protections.

We reject any notion that the Supreme Court ruling was influenced by, or issued as a result of, a transphobic political climate and note Lord Hodge’s remark when delivering the judgement - that it should not be seen as victory of one side over another. We oppose misrepresentations of the ruling causing anxiety and division. Trans people continue to have protection against discrimination and harassment within the Equality Act and “In the light of case law interpreting the relevant provisions, a trans woman can claim sex discrimination because she is perceived to be a woman.”

We reiterate that efforts must be made to improve resourcing within the current system for trans people to access the health and welfare services they need across Britain and that the Communist Party will continue to call for these. For Women Scotland, in winning their case against the Scottish government, have provided legal clarification for women and girls in the fight to assert and defend single sex provision in Britain, and we commend them. ENDS.

Thanks for sharing @fromorbit. I'm gutted the Communist Party aren't standing in my local area, I'm really struggling on who to vote for, I'm generally quite left-leaning and they've always been on the side of material reality.

Thanks @fromorbit I love their statement. And thankful to be honest - I’m sick of having people, who should know me better (who like me actually are left wing) calling me a right wing Trump sympathiser and more.

An article that may irritate? - we need more warning than this

On the surface, “what is a woman?” seems like a very obvious question to answer, but when you actually try to define it, it becomes difficult. A woman has breasts and a womb. Does this mean that if a woman has a hysterectomy or a mastectomy she is no longer a woman? Women can reproduce – well, actually, not all can.

It's not that hard

The very concept of “women” is an umbrella term to include all kinds of women, including trans women. Ultimately, the only biological marker that defines sex is chromosomes.

The very concept of women is an umbrella term?

You cannot tell someone’s chromosomes just by looking at them. This is why we have the concept of gender. We gauge whether someone is male or female from a mixture of physical and social characteristics.

You'd like this to be true but it isn't.

And so it goes on....

How can you make rational decisions in government when your thinking is underpinned by such irrational ideas?

When Mhairi Black was first elected to parliament, I thought good for her, this will be interesting.

Then she opened her mouth.

john swinney cannot answer the question ‘do you still think trans women are women?’

Perhaps not as balanced as we might hope from someone who served as one of our elective representatives. Notably he ex colleagues have decided not to be as forthright with their opinions - but maybe they think the same as her based on past comments? Strange times - it will be difficult for me to trust that any politicians are sane after this.

But there is no shame. Just word salad. I'm not detecting a lot of squirming either. He blusters on without any hint of embarrassment. How can he stand there and say he wants everyone to feel welcome when the SNP snubbed FWS and ignored the GC views? No wonder they were happy to peddle lies to trans people - they have no shame at all.

I'd have more respect for him if he'd own up to the SNP/SG having got that wrong, I'd still not vote for them next year though.

I agree, it’s as bad as when Sturgeon wouldn’t answer the question about rapist Adam Graham, I genuinely can’t understand their thinking, if there is any thinking!

Do the Greens actually bother with environmental issues these days?

Well sterilising children and providing cross sex hormones and genital mutilation to adults is one way to reduce the birth rate - so maybe this is all a stealth Green plot to lower the population?

Or maybe they are just thick as mince grifting irrelevant misogynists.
Hard to tell really.
