Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Aren’t the front pages and headlines glorious!

I know there is a fair amount of bandwagon jumping, but it feels like the newspapers have finally read the room and realised that the SC ruling is welcomed by FAR more people than it disappoints. And so the front pages have smiling faces and headlines that would never have been published before.

Even, for example, the Metro which has had a pretty shocking record before has a pretty clear headline and a picture of smiling women.

Newspaper headlines: 'Victory for women' and 'equity policies in chaos'

Thursday's front pages lead on the Supreme Court's ruling that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

Of course, most media outlets have shamefully been quiet on the issue as it impacts women...and only focused on how it impacts those with trans identities. Many will simply double down in the face of the ruling.

The above video features quite a passable transwoman...and the inference is clear. The solution to the issue is third spaces. You cannot have a rule with some exceptions for passable trans people, because the rule then no longer holds..

Edited

I think many trans women are not going to be happy with a third space though are they? I actually find all this quite scary for women and girls. I’m worried that this ruling will actually just stoke the fire on the issue.

Agreed

And this is just a hunch, but I should imagine focus will be swiftly achieved after the first couple of £100,000 fines.

Exactly.

In answer to the OP, no. It’s horrible.

We need proper solutions based on a deeper and more nuanced understanding of gender/sex. Not rulings that leave a minority in the wilderness.

The minority is covered in the Equality Act. Time for campaigners to start working on trans sports events and leagues, prison provision for trans offenders, shelters for trans DV victims, etc - you know, just as women had to at the beginning of women’s rights.

Can’t you see how that shuts down discussion and is disrespectful to other people’s experience?

I’m afraid the view that sex is not binary and immutable really isn’t worthy of respect. It’s flat earth stuff.

There is no obligation to be respectful of nonsense views

If u watch the BBC or read the Guardian I feel sorry for you

😂😂😂
Is that all you have?

But I'll bite (because I'm bored). Which are the correct and acceptable media outlets?

I think any legal challenges will be on the basis of claiming that the single sex exemption has been incorrectly applied rather than on the basis that someone of the opposite sex should be able to use a single sex service

I agree!

Quite!

Joss Prior filmed himself in a women's toilet yesterday, just to show us......

Is there currently a legal ruling that companies and organisations must provide single sex toilets, I'm not sure? Is it just that this has been standard practice, rather than a legal ruling?

TheOtherRaven · 17/04/2025 16:33

Baroness Faulkner, today in the Irvine Times:

On other issues such as toilets, changing rooms and sports, Baroness Falkner echoed the Government in saying the ruling had brought “clarity” to providers on their duties under equality law around single-sex spaces. Asked if it was now simple that trans women cannot take part in women’s sport, she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Yes, it is.” On changing rooms and toilets, Baroness Falkner said: “Single-sex services like changing rooms must be based on biological sex.” She said there is no law against organisations providing a third space such as unisex toilets and suggested trans rights organisations “should be using their powers of advocacy to ask for those third spaces”.

British transport police have shifted today to an 'interim policy' that searches are done by an officer of the same sex only.

I think roughly, in schools and workplaces yes, they must (cf the Sandy Peggie case), otherwise, no, they can provide just unisex facilities?

I don't know if there is, but I think a case could be made for discrimination if they don't.

Unisex toilets disproportionately disadvantage women.

Plus they're deeply unpopular.

I really think this Pandora's box is going to get blown wide open.

You're going to see transwomen melting down on the telly because they don't want a third space.

And people will see all the nasty stuff come out

muddyford · 17/04/2025 16:45

I heard a trans woman on the BBC saying she can't pee in a bottle so needs to be in a women's ward in hospital...

I hope this means the WI will rethink its fawning on the issue, so I can rejoin after resigning six years ago.

The best part is it’s not our remit. Women are out.

We have clarity, good luck to the other sex class.

This judgment was on the meaning of sex and the words woman/man in the Equality Act. The minority you refer to all have a sex into which they were born, even if they wish they had been born into the other. They are protected as trans-identifying people under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment. Surely the vast majority of the population are entitled to their own protected characteristic of sex or do trans-identifying people expect to have more rights than anyone else?

It’s a hollow victory to be honest, the fact that this nonsense got so far shows that our government doesn’t represent us at all

Of all this decision has made clear, just how absolutely entrenched and enabled this nonsense has become is what stands out the most clearly of all.

It is shocking. Where are the apologies?

In workplaces it’s the law. In schools it’s the law. Not EA, different laws. Unless they provide single cubicles with washing facilities.

At Manchester Uni the only toilets that are single-sex are the Men’s – your choices are unisex or men’s. 🙈

Universities are workplaces but I am dubious about whether we will see them update their transgender policies for students.

I also still think it'll be a brave woman who tests the law in these workspaces.

I don't think anything will change at my institution, as I don't think they're likely to update the policy or else point out that they have done so.
