My broadband is rubbish and so my feed is more buffering circle than actual content, so I've given up, but the brief bit I caught mentioned the 197something act. Is their reasoning that the Equality Act is basically combining a bunch of anti-discrimination acts, and as it meant biological sex in the sex discrimination act, it follows it meant biological sex in the Equality Act too?

Motorina · 16/04/2025 10:08

Listening to the 9 points, they have really got all the issues. Lesbian clubs, single sex spaces, women’s sports….

Well done everyone involved.

snickersbarchild · 16/04/2025 10:08

They've covered absolutely everything. Bloody marvelous.

popehilarious · 16/04/2025 10:08

Clicked into the livestream just in time.
Just taking it all in and trying to hear this judge over the other talking...?! All very sensible findings from what I can hear

Edit - realised I had accidentally clicked one of the hearing videos from further down the page as well so was wondering why someone was talking over the Supreme Court at such an important moment!!! Grin

Thank-you WFS. You brave women!!!
Thanks 😊

Now how much would I want to be a fly.on the wall at NHS Fife???

I'm thinking the meme from the IT crowd leaving the board room?

tothesea · 16/04/2025 10:09

I can hardly believe it..has sanity been restored??!! Well done and thank you so much to FWS. I wear my FWS badge with pride but especially today. Hurrah!!

Certificated sex would undermine protections on sexuality and single sex services and single sex characteristic associationa (sport, equality duty etc).

Wow!!

littlbrowndog · 16/04/2025 10:09

It’s live on bbc

"Don't underestimate the influence of Mumsnet in all this. They've provied a platofrm that has continuously kept them going. They've had a LOT of inpact to end up where we find ourselves today."

desiringtoremainsane · 16/04/2025 10:09

Protections for women on the basis of sex do not undermine the protections of transgender women (then lists a bunch of protections that they have)

PoshCoffee · 16/04/2025 10:10

ArabellaScott · 16/04/2025 10:06

It's a 'gender' certificate. And gender is meaningless.

Gender may be meaningless but a law that allows people a certificate that gives them the right to change their sex marker in official documents is not meaningless. Not trying to be a party pooper because this is wonderful news, I’m just trying to get my head around it all and perhaps I should stop and let someone else do the hard work.
In the meantime 🍾🍾🍾🎉🥳🍾🍾🍾🍾

Waitwhat23 · 16/04/2025 10:10

I am again reminded how fucking blessed that up here, we have such powerhouses fighting for women's rights. FWS, MBM, SFN, SWRN, the list just goes on and on. I can't even bear to think where the situation here would be without them.

BettyBooper · 16/04/2025 10:10

The BBC newsreader sounds completely disappointed!

Puttinginthemiles · 16/04/2025 10:10

BlueBrush · 16/04/2025 10:03

Here's the quote

"The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex"

I read that online and thought no, they can't mean that, there's bound to be a bloody big 'but'. There isn't. Ecstatic here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart FWS.

Wonder what this will mean for Sandie's case? Surely NHS Fife are screwed.

Brainworm · 16/04/2025 10:10

Lovely footage of Naomi, Maya, Helen and Michael hugging when the panel leave

Mmmnotsure · 16/04/2025 10:10

THIS IS THE SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT.
Just saying.

HalfWomanHalfHobnob · 16/04/2025 10:10

When they all stood and Helen Joyce went in to hug Michael Foran 😭

CriticalCondition · 16/04/2025 10:10

Mia and Naomi hugged as the judges left. I'm in tears now

PersonIrresponsible · 16/04/2025 10:11

How beautiful to see Maya, Helen, Naomi et al hug after!

WELL DONE FWS!!!!!! You utter heroes.

LizzieSiddal · 16/04/2025 10:11

Mmmnotsure · 16/04/2025 10:10

THIS IS THE SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT.
Just saying.

Can anyone appeal against this?!

WandaSiri · 16/04/2025 10:11

PoshCoffee · 16/04/2025 10:03

Exactly my thinking. If this changes “gender for all purposes” but not sex in the Equality Act, what’s the point of the GRA?

It allows you to get your birth certificate and other documents changed. Yoo are deemed to be the other sex for specific legal purposes concerned only with your relationship to the state. Purposes specified in GRA. Can't remember what they all are, IANAL.

I mean, that is still bad and ridiculous but I think this judgement means that a GRC doesn't by default change your sex for purposes outside the GRA.

mrshoho · 16/04/2025 10:11

I'm crying tears. Yes 💖 finally . Still in shock but hurray

PoshCoffee · 16/04/2025 10:11

Surely NHS Fife are screwed

Lets fucking hope so!

LizzieSiddal · 16/04/2025 10:11

popehilarious · 16/04/2025 10:11
