I'm going to a friend's later to celebrate. She's Russian and I think it's a big deal there.

It is, my wife is from a former Soviet Republic, where it's nicknamed National Starvation Day, as the men are supposed to do the cooking!

As an aside, on another thread, someone asked if the Mumsnet M has changed. It's Suffragette colours.

Watching the Scottish news just there covering the IWD march in Edinburgh and the person at the front is holding a trans flag and a few other 'trans rights' placards being waved about. I'm hoping it was to support trans men 🙄.

The Irish Times is celebrating '25 Brilliant Irishwomen' today, which inevitably includes a biological male called Lydia Foy.
Because of course, there are only 24 brilliant women in Ireland, so they had to make up numbers somehow😡

It's a disgrace, truly.

I lived and worked for 10 years in eastern Germany (former GDR), and there 8 March also still is a thing. Our boss came round to all the women in the office, congratulated us on Women's Day and we got a flower bouquet. It was an IT company, so not something "state", but it was traditional.

International Women's Day is a public holiday in Berlin, but afaik not anywhere else in Germany. Certainly not where I am, but in my company some of the union representatives invited all women for coffee and cake on Wednesday next week.

On radio 2 today Romesh Ramganathan wished Sally Traffic Happy International Women's Day and she was NOT happy. In fact she was clearly put out and acted quite passive aggressive. I was squirming with embarrassment at her frustrated tone. She ended up by saying "well what am I supposed to say to that?" And he snapped back "you say thank you" and immediately played Alicia Keyes "this girl is on fire".

I suspect Sally isn't one for relating to international women....

Happy IWD! My workplace has an IWD event which is aimed at "all genders" and aims for a "50/50 gender split". I think somebody didn't think that through... how transphobic.

See I wouldn't be able to hold my tongue and post back saying why not save that person for trans day of visibility or pride month or all the other days that they are celebrated? Let IWD be for born women, the ones that birth all humans, the ones who have a strength that men will never know.
