Surprise at council gym

I have recently joined the local council run leisure centre. I was pleasantly surprised to see this sign outside both male and female dry changing rooms.

The alternative changing rooms the sign refers to is the changing village used for the swimming pools.

It’s sad that I was surprised by the sign, and makes me wonder what prompted it.

I am sad you were surprised. This should be the norm.

Lovelyview · 03/03/2025 15:26

That is a great sign. I'd write to the gym to express my appreciation.

Melroses · 03/03/2025 15:26

Oh that was a good surprise 😃

Great to see this. Nice clear wording, perfectly 'kind' too. No, this shouldn't be news but it is good to show how things can be managed sensitively; it doesn't need to be all 'fuck off if you're trans' as the TRAs would have us believe.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 03/03/2025 15:56

Good for the council. The sign is clear, courteous and sensible. And the facilities protect women’s and children’s rights without disadvantaging anyone. I wish this would catch on everywhere.

MotherAbigail · 03/03/2025 17:48

It’s all the more satisfying as it is in the same town where there is currently a high profile case involving nurses and changing rooms at the hospital

I like it because it’s saying that women who don’t want to change in mixed sex facilities are not the ones who have to use the alternative.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/03/2025 17:55

Unfortunately that sign is meaningless when TW say they are biologically female...

Sadly, given the sworn testimony of Dr Upton recently, that was my thought too. It really, really shouldn't be, though.

WallaceinAnderland · 03/03/2025 18:00

It gives women the right to challenge males in the female changing area. Fantastic!

EdithStourton · 03/03/2025 18:03

That's a step in the right direction.

Do you know how recent the sign is

I'd suggest it's clear enough to allow any woman encountering a male in the women's changing room to formally complain about voyeurism or indecent exposure. These are criminal acts and it's long overdue that men choosing to breach women's boundaries in this way are dealt with by our long established criminal laws.

Igmum · 03/03/2025 18:22

I like your council gym @MotherAbigail . Hope they are also spreading the good word to other councils.

RaininSummer · 03/03/2025 18:44

What a great sign.

DisappearingGirl · 03/03/2025 19:38

That's brilliant.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/03/2025 19:39

Oh, that is a well written sign.

Sorry no, I only joined the gym last week, so I don’t know how long it’s been there

That is a kind and well-written notice.

JanesLittleGirl · 03/03/2025 22:45

It is a beautifully written sign. It can only be wilfully misinterpreted which means that any transgressor can reasonably be ejected.

BodyKeepingScore · 03/03/2025 22:52

This is a wonderful sign. Not least because it will become abundantly clear that women do not want to share these spaces with men. And that the only people using the mixed spaces are unlikely to be women...

ChangingHistory · 03/03/2025 22:54

I love this. It won't stop men who (pretend to) believe they are female but at least women will be able to say something. Do email them to thank them for their inclusivity.

I do pity the staff who have to deal with an eventual 'Beth' though.

MaxCrisp · 03/03/2025 23:02

Such a sensible and straightforward way of wording it too. Hard to see how anyone could object.... although I'm sure they will.

eatfigs · 03/03/2025 23:15

This is excellent, well done to whoever commissioned these signs. My only nitpick is they could drop the unnecessary "inclusive".

i'm not sure. That is perhaps the way to state clearly that no-one is being excluded, there are changing rooms for all, etc, etc. Perhaps that spelling out is what is necessary.
