Columbine copycat in Edinburgh - what does 'transgender' mean in reporting?

The reporting on the BBC has been very clear that he is a boy, but also says that he is transgender. Is this a male who they are calling male, or an FTM?

A vulnerable and mentally disturbed girl pumped full of testosterone is my guess. The health professionals facilitating this should hang their heads in shame.

the report suggests this girl was showing symptoms of violence and intrusive thoughts.

Teachers are not psychiatrists - which is why affirmation in school is such a terrible idea. Mental illnesses are being missed, and that can be dangerous.

Not just teachers. HCPs are missing comorbidities at the mention of 'trans'. Mental health issues are going untreated.

True. I read the interview of Esther Ghey, why was her child’s issues not addressed? Why would anyone think an eating disorder or adhd would be managed with cross sex hormones?

it’s negligence and it’s criminal.

That is a heartbreaking article.

'Brett had so many issues, she says – body dysmorphia and dysphoria, asthma, ADHD, appalling eyesight, autism (then undiagnosed). There were times when he couldn’t face school and was a non-attender. At the age of 14, Brett explained that he wanted to transition. Ghey took it in her stride. In the book, she writes: “When the transition happened for Brianna it was perhaps one of the easiest parts of her short life.”'

It seems that 'transition' is presented as a cure-all to a variety of very difficult and complex issues.

I read it that way too.

any bereaved mother deserves grace, I was shocked by messages she must have seen.

It's a really good, truthful article.

A very moving piece.

I don't think it's clear from the article whether there was any clinical involvement, except for the eating disorder.

I agree. I plan to buy Esther Ghey’s book based on that article.

TRAs are not happy that Esther Ghey is campaigning for internet restrictions for children and for mindfulness in schools rather than using her (tragic) platform to promote sex changes for minors a la Susie Green.

I think female, purely because the BBC are saying "boy". Like Dues I was wondering what possible bearing a transgender identity should have on sentencing. If it's to make it more lenient everyone is going to want one.

I agree, the article is literally littered with the word 'boy' in a way that makes the writing style a bit odd.

PronounssheRa · 22/02/2025 16:58

Esther Ghey has been the model of dignity.

The inquest into Briannas death flagged all kinds of issues with on line activity including the risk of sexual exploitation. It strikes me that Esther sees the harms, she lived it.

This young woman didn't need testosterone and lies, she needed medical support to get well.

The times article (to me) seemed to indicate ASD, (at the least) but obviously a very troubled individual. Hope she gets the care and support she needs.
