We had a Khaki Campbell drake called Muggeridge because my mother rather mistakenly admired Malcolm of that name and he (the drake) was a deranged sex maniac who used to molest his duckling daughters and chase the bantam hen, a third his size, round the garden with malign intent. Fortunately she had a tighter turning circle than him and could, at a pinch, fly up into a tree.

I wrote a poem for her:

Cluck cluck cluck,
I'm not a duck,
I don't want to play.

Possibly misremembered one word there.

Foxes can be good neighbours, one of them saw old Muggsy off.

Marie de Gournay annseo a mhúinteoir!

Thank you for that info. If I'd known back in the 1600s that the [slightly] noble de Gournays would end up fishing off the coast of West Cork, well lookit, I'da been fierce surprised😄

Great things those revolutions.

I would pay my weight in Tunnocks to see that interpretive dance.

I think that was possibly the oddest thing I've ever asked AI to illustrate... Fortunately it appears Gemini is quite prudish!

oh Glynis

But that's the thing, she hears ONE word, misinterprets it and thinks 'oh I'm meant to have rumpy-pumpy on the safe where's George?'

She isn't the only one, either, and it's all communications, not just health advice. No wonder the food orders get so ODD at times. And the drinks orders.

Ah, now I know why I feel so at home here. My students do exactly the same thing! Although I haven't yet caught any of them getting their legs over on a safe, so I suppose thank goodness for small mercies.

You may remember I like making models, but I can't remember if you've seen my completed book nook. I'll post this image and then switch to a different screen to post the completed images.

Completed booknook which I loved doing. I bought a new one on Saturday expecting it to arrive next week and it came today.

I will wait a week before starting because I'm a bit achey from all the model making. I can get a bit obsessed...

@MyrtleLion

I had to google “booknooks”because I’d never heard of them…

They are all amazing, Myrtle. (And to think you have grappled with such detail with such large paws too…!)

I LOVE this one though; it looks so magical!

Read A Book GIF by Bill the Bear

Do you have two book nooks now then? If so, are they both the same model?

Thank you everyone!

Strictly speaking this is not a booknook because it doesn't look like a book (I'll post a picture of the new one so you can see the difference.)

It was really fiddly - glue a tiny gold bead to a tiny gold flower ring and stick them on a tiny plastic bead to make a potion bottle. I didn't think I would do another because I had to cut out paper and stick it to bits of wood. The wood is sometimes fragile and breaks and I made a lot of mistakes positioning the buildings - I have two floating bannister things as a result.

But the process was really absorbing, which is helpful to take my mind off job hunting disappointment. I loved working out the problems and it helps keep my inner perfectionist control freak at bay.

No, this is another magic one which I am mildly annoyed by. I thought I had bought a museum version.

This is a booknook. They are designed to look like books on a shelf but have little scenes inside. It's astonishing the amount of detail in making tiny items that are then not fully seen.

For example the stairs (see picture) took about 90 minutes to make and you can barely see them at the back of the shop (image of the shop, the stairs are at the back).

I can believe it was fiddly!

So sorry you’re still hitting disappointment on the job front; that sucks 😢.

They must not know of your creative precision….Glad it is helping.

Wow, that's incredible.

I find it really hard to enjoy doing fiddly tiny things. Not dextrous enough ... stiff awkward hands hooves.

Your job hunting will uncover something you really like/that's good for you to get stuck into in due course, I'm sure. Meanwhile you have absorbing, creative hobbies ❤️

<wanders in eating Tunnocks I've just won off a moose>

I always think I'll enjoy making tiny fiddly things. Then after half an hour my fingers are all glued together, some pieces have attached themselves to the cats tail, and so I stop for a break to wash the glue off. Three hours later I walk past the carnage, shove it all back in the box, stick the box in a cupboard and rediscover 10 years later.

Every time!

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2025 21:22

Myrtle those are fabulous. Really gorgeous, I'm in awe. But....
How do you dust them?

Chersfrozenface · 17/02/2025 21:23

I so admire dexterity, patience and perseverance, particularly in a lion.

I can't do fiddly things. Well, no fiddlier than rolling a hem on organza or sewing 24 darts by hand, anyway.

And every time, I suppose you think that you can just quickly glue the stuff together and you'll have some lovely… erm ... items?

You're all so kind ❤️

I had such severe anxiety last year that I could barely function. It was utterly unbearable. I found absorbing myself in computer games and books really helped. I couldn't make models even though one was sat on my desk for nearly a year. Making the models has been really great so I think it's a good sign that I can make them now - even though I'm a bit obsessed at the moment.

I had some feedback on an application today and they said I interviewed well with the recruiter. However some candidates had more of the required skills and experience than I did. He said, I could easily have done the job well, but so could all the shortlisted candidates who had worked for a similar organisation or had worked on this exact type of project.

It was very helpful and increased my confidence. I hope to hear about a couple of other applications soon and I have at least three more roles to apply for this week.

As for the fiddly things, I bought a set of electron tweezers which are really helpful. I also have dressmaking pins which are brilliant - I put down some glue, thread a tiny plastic bead on the pin, dip the bead in the glue, pick up the flower ring, dip in the glue then pick up the tiny gold bead, then push together and count for a minute for the glue to go off and set, then set it aside.

DH gave me a spare scalpel set (he has the weirdest tools!) and I bought a cutting mat and a metal ruler to cut out the tiny images and that has helped.

MyrtleLion · 17/02/2025 21:35

@Boiledbeetle I keep a bottle of hand sanitiser at my desk - it takes the glue off very easily then I wash my hands every time I make tea. Though sometimes I am.so absorbed I forget to drink the tea...

@FuzzyPuffling what is this dusting of which you speak? 🤔

@Chersfrozenface I couldn't do dressmaking because all the mistakes would be obvious. There are many mistakes in the models if you know where to look...
