Key Information about this research study:

The following is a short summary of this study to help you decide whether to be a part of this study. Information that is more detailed is explained later on in this form.

• The purpose of this study is to learn more about common questions and concerns related to autogynephilia, especially among gender critical persons who are not themselves autogynephilic.
• You will be asked to complete a survey.
• I expect that you will be in this research study for approximately 15 minutes.
• The primary potential risk of participation is risk of emotional/psychological discomfort from participating.
• There is no direct benefit to participants of being in this study.

Why am I being asked to take part in this research study?

I am asking you to take part in this research study because I am trying to learn more about common beliefs, questions, and concerns about autogynephilia, from persons without autogynephilia who may identify as gender critical, or who are otherwise interested in this topic .

How many people will be in this study?

I expect from 100 to 1,000 people will be in this research study.

What should I know about participating in a research study?

• Whether or not you take part is up to you.
• You can choose not to take part.
• You can agree to take part and later change your mind.
• Your decision will not be held against you.
• You can ask all the questions you want before you decide.
• You do not have to answer any question you do not want to answer.

What happens if I say, “Yes, I want to be in this research”?

You will complete an online survey at your own pace. The survey begins with a few questions about demographics (such as your sex, age, education, and political orientation). You will be asked about questions you have about autogynephilia, as well as your attitudes about autogynephilia. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes of your time.

Will being in this study help me in any way?

I cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research. However, possible benefits include the opportunity for you to raise questions that I will address in my research and future essays. You will also have access to deidentified survey results, so you will know how people generally respond to the same questions.

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?

Possible risks include:

Psychological discomfort thinking about issues including sexuality and gender dysphoria.

Loss of privacy and confidentiality, if someone reads your survey answers on your computer. To avoid this, I recommend that you take the survey in a place where others cannot view your computer screen, and that when you are finished, you immediately close your browser.

What happens if I do not want to be in this research, or I change my mind later?

Participation in research is voluntary. You can decide to participate or not to participate. If you do not want to be in this study or withdraw from the study at any point, your decision will not affect your relationship with Northwestern University. You can leave the research at any time and it will not be held against you.

How will the researchers protect my information?

This survey is anonymous. I will not request that you provide your name, and you should not provide it.

This survey is being hosted by Qualtrics and involves a secure connection with SSL data encryption. Terms of service addressing confidentiality may be viewed at http://www.qualtrics.com/research-suite/. You will be identified only by a unique subject number. All information will be kept on a password protected computer only accessible by the research team.

Data from the survey may be shared with other researchers, so that they can check our results or perform their own analyses.

The results of the research study will be published.

Who will have access to the information collected during this research study?

The information you provide does not include identifying information (such as your name, phone number, email address, or home address). Thus, no one will have access to your personal information. The anonymous information you provide will primarily be examined, along with information from other participants, by the Principal Investigator, J. Michael Bailey.

How might the information collected in this study be shared in the future?

The anonymous data may also be shared with other researchers, either directly, through data depositories, or in research publications.

Will I be paid or given anything for taking part in this study?

No, you will not receive financial compensation for participating.

Who can I talk to?
