Deadly border shootout linked to 6 deaths and a cabal of intellects into AI and transgenderism

I’ve come across this story in the last few days and it is both very strange and very worrying what this group of young people believe and were prepared to do in defence of their beliefs.

I thought I’d post it here because it has some similarities to recent killings in the US by young men (and women) who were feeling alienated from society and were being negatively affected by genderism.

Deadly border shootout linked to 6 deaths and a cabal of intellects into AI and transgenderism

An bizarre shootout that killed a U.S. Border Patrol agent and a suspect near the Canadian border is turning into a sprawling investigation.

Well, that is weird. I think Blocked and Reported might be prepping an episode on this.

WarriorN · 02/02/2025 18:00

An already bizarre shootout that killed a U.S. Border Patrol agent and a suspect on a highway near the Canadian border is unfurling into a sprawling investigation encompassing four other killings allegedly linked to an odd cabal of young math and computer whizzes sharing a passion for artificial intelligence, veganism, fringe philosophy and gender fluidity.

None of the attacks resulting in six deaths in three states have been against grand, ideologically chosen targets, as is often found with terror groups or radical cells, but rather seem to be small-minded, reactionary targets based on personal grievances.

It just sounds so very familiar, and also so very cult like.

WarriorN · 02/02/2025 18:01

With the arrival of the internet and the ability to have online communities, it may be that the definition of terrorism really does need to change.

Garlicworth · 02/02/2025 18:20

Wow. It's the perfect plot for a mini-series. How weird and scary! Agree with @WarriorN, this is a form of terrorism: ideologues taking 'cancellation' to a fatal conclusion.

I had read something about this and the author called this group the 'Zizian Cult' (described as the Manson Cult + T).

The story is being picked up in some parts of the media in the US:

Sneezeless · 02/02/2025 23:03

Awful for the victims. Because of the deranged ideology of these people, is inevitable that something like this was bound to happen. Hopefully it won't embolden others of their ilk; there are some truly psychotic TRAs out there.

That additional information is insane!! There is so much going on there and it’s verified information so why isn’t it being covered by national media in the US? A murderous cult is exactly the type of story that cable news loves cos they can spin it out for days. Why not this story??

Plus getting the faces of dangerous people out there will help track them down and warn the public of the danger they present.

I’m not sure which part of story is the most shocking but them stabbing an 82 year old man with swords (and him losing an eye) because he found these people squatting on his land AND after he got out of hospital they went back and killed him to stop him testifying against them in court - this is so cruel and disgusting.

This story has made wonder what is the noticeable fascination with swords among males in genderist groups?! Over the years, I’ve seen many selfies posted online of transID males holding swords threateningly in women’s public toilets or selfies of them with captions like 'TERF POV before she dies'. I thought they were posing as OTT threatening for social media kudos but now I’m rethinking the prevalence of these types of posts.

I’m in the SF Bay Area at the moment. The story has been on CBS, Fox and NBC. But the US is much bigger than the UK and crime generally isn’t as big a draw for national news. It’s been well covered on local channels - which many people get their news from - in the local area.

Also - as shocking as it is - it’s hardly the first time there’s been a murderous cult here or callous murders of individuals. It’s not normal, but I don’t think people see it as a threat to their own safety in the same way they might see bombings or even wild fires as a threat (without that being any judgement on how right people are to hold those view points). And I suspect a lot of people see it more as an extension of entitled libertarian tech bro-mindedness - for which they have the Musk story to look to - than TRA-mindedness.

The swords will come from gaming. As will the attitude of killing people off for slights and that you can adopt different identities.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/02/2025 10:28

This is a very accessible true crime podcast about the group. Only 55 mins, an easy watch and explains all the connections.

They are really losing their grasp on reality, aren't they?

Ray Kurzweil has been preaching the power of the Singularity to save us from death for decades and I remember thinking he was bonkers in the late 90s. It was also a common trope in hard scifi of the time - particularly with authors like Greg Egan and Charles Stross (although they did point out the negatives of having your mind uploaded to a computer).

I think it’s mad that the people in this group, and to a large extent lots of Silicon Valley types, believe in transhumanism but I didn’t realise it had become a cultish form of belief.

Very much pop psychology but… there’s something phallic about it- maybe a need to externally demonstrate the power of the phallus despite the effeminate dress. So many are shown wielding baseball bats, truncheons, guns, knives… either that or a handbag. 🤐

I hadn't considered that aspect of it...

It's very peculiar behaviour but then again a lot of behaviour from very online males is peculiar, to say the least.

And there's such a lot of strong anger aimed at women. It's almost as though these men hate and resent women for existing and that they consider women as having "power" over them because these men are sexually attracted to women. It's got a lot in common with Taliban attitudes towards women, scarily a lot in common.

OP posts:

In this particular case though, the object of hatred is people who are in their way- parents, landowner, law enforcement.
There doesn’t seem as obvious woman targeting as usual.

Also a good point, they seem to view murder as an acceptable way of dealing with people who have angered them or who prevent them from achieving what they want. Viewing other human beings in such a diminishing way is horrific. Are they psychopathic or brainwashed cultists?

I saw this on the news when it happened (in the US). I believe it was on the ABC nightly news but it could have been another channel. A quick Google reveals it was covered by several news orgs.

Agree. These people are the sort who probably spent thousands of hours in their formative years gaming and sneering at kids who had a life.

This is such an age old, and grim viewpoint. Aphra Behn was onto this back in the 1600s : when in The Rover, Willmore tries to rape Florinda, he says she wounded him first by looking at him. Chivalric poets often framed a lady's eyes as wounding but here it gets a violently misogynistic twist.
There's a really weird writer on Quillette, Marilyn Simon. She writes these v overblown essays about her sex life w her new hubby, & then generalises about sexuality. She's a Shakespeare prof & has a lot of interesting takes, some that are batshit & some downright offensive. In one she writes about how women have power through men being so keen to sleep w us after just a look. A few issues there, & then she quotes a male friend who says that if he sees a pic of a beautiful woman, he wants to bring her low bc it's unfair her beauty gives her power over him.
Her writing often feels like bad erotica (she's a fan of The Story of O, unsurprisingly...) but there was a disturbingly accurate point here imo, for some men, anyway.
