Very quietly and with no fanfare...

Green Party disaffiliate from stonewall

It's possible that the BBC might be waking up too, although that still remains to be seen:

Hm.

Today on BBC News main page.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c704pngr33yo

"Wah, doctors won't lop my breasts off!"

"I can't access trans-friendly underwear!"

On that second point, there are loads. Modibodi has an entire range.

I suppose it's possible that this shows the BBC getting desperate to elicit sympathy for the most oppressed evah.

Exit to apologise for digression.

Thingybob · 02/02/2025 10:11

It's from a motion put forward in 2023 which obviously never passed.

I don't think there is any official statement from the Green Party regarding their disaffiliation.

Please, don’t take away my hopes but I fear you may be right without there being an official GP acknowledgement.

Lots of advice on binders too 😠

Jay-Harley said being trans in a small town meant there were very few LGBTQ+ resources available locally.
"It's a love and hate war right now," he said. "There's not enough spaces out there where we can be ourselves, where we can feel safe and protected."
He said he has had to "put on a fake deeper voice and pretend to be a lad just to go to the shop, a restaurant, or pub".

'pretend to be a lad'!? Isn't that just it though?

Apologies from me too.

BonfireLady · 02/02/2025 12:39

FFS BBC. I've copied my and Chersfrozeface's comments over to this aptly named thread:

OP, I started the accidental derail so profuse apologies from me. This thread can now focus back on the Green Party's bat-shittery and its hopeful climb out of it!

Why would it be "pretending"? Trans men are men, no?

Bananaskeleton · 02/02/2025 12:45

I really wish Local Authorities would do this too. My Local Authority is in a terrible financial position yet still proudly proclaims itself a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

Rhaidimiddim · 02/02/2025 12:46

Too late.

I think what SA is saying is that he brought a motion to conference a while ago, and they have quietly disaffiliated without telling anyone (presumably he's saying he has knowledge of this). I agree the text he used in his tweet is the text of the unsuccessful motion.

Yes. This is it.

Disaffiliation hasn't been announced to members and TRAs still have the majority in 2 of the most powerful bodies in the Green Party - GPRC (Green Party Regional Council) and DC (Disciplinary Committee)

cariadlet · 02/02/2025 12:51

Membership was allowed to lapse for financial reasons rather than a decision to disafiliate made by Conference.

cariadlet · 02/02/2025 12:53

Shahrar Ali actually proposed disafiliation to Conference 4 times. Each time, either the motion wasn't heard (so much time is wasted that many of the motions on the agenda aren't heard) or it was defeated.

Interesting.

Because the GP now has so little money that it can't afford the subs?

Rather than using "not value for money" as a figleaf for disaffiliating as some public bodies have done?

cariadlet · 02/02/2025 13:00

I don't 100% know because the decision hasn't been shared publicly.

Par for the course with GPEW. The decision to join Stonewall was never announced publicly either - it was buried in the accounts.

anyolddinosaur · 02/02/2025 13:14
  1. They cant afford more court cases.
  2. Elections are coming up and they may - finally - be realising their batshit approach is a turn off

I wont consider voting for them again until the leadership changes.

zanahoria · 02/02/2025 13:28

Even if there was value in the 'training' Stonewall offer, it is hard to understand why anyone would want to permanently sign up to these schemes. Surely after a year or so everyone would be 'trained'? What more do they offer on top of that?

zanahoria · 02/02/2025 13:30

Stonewall selling training to organizations that they then give certificates to is the modern secular equivalent of the Roman Catholic Church selling indulgences.

Give us your money and be free of the sin of transphobia

Rhaidimiddim · 02/02/2025 12:46

Too late.

Too late forever, the fact they joined and were stupid enough to follow stonewall law means they cannot be trusted to not blindly follow the next big thing, with zero critical thinking. And even if I could get over the stupidity, there were many people (very brave people) telling them this wasnt right, there was more to it and women will be hurt by this, and they were ignored.

So stupid and ignorant doesnt make a political party I want to vote for.

All the same, baby steps ....

IdaGlossop · 02/02/2025 14:39

In recent years, I have voted Green in local elections. I consider them too immature organisationally to trust them with my national vote. However, I have been reluctant to vote for them even in local elections since they suspended our excellent parliamentary candidate for stating publicly that sex is biological and that there are two sexes. Then, instead of dealing with her case, she remained suspended for months, with no action taken. I explained this to two GP canvassers at the time of last year's local elections. Both of them looked really uncomfortable and remained silent. I felt for them, having stood silently on doorsteps as a Labour canvasser as people railed against Labour.

Hopefully, withdrawing from Stonewall will be the first of many steps to make the party more electable so there is a force on the left to provide a better balance with Reform on the right.

Fruityful · 02/02/2025 16:16

The Green Party got a lot of support from Muslims for their stance on Gaza and Israel. Muslims are not on board with LGBTQWTFBBQ politics. Seeing support and numbers for the Trans lobby slipping away, they're trading that in and gambling on becoming a big draw for Muslim voters.

Chersfrozenface · 02/02/2025 16:19

The Green Party is a prime example of Omnicause adherence.

vandel · 02/02/2025 16:26

Be great if Stonewall disassociated from itself.

Chewii · 02/02/2025 20:38

How do we know that the party has ACTUALLY disaffiliated?
