Mother of man convicted of abusing his partner before she took her own life is under police investigation

The mother and girlfriend of a man convicted of abusing his partner before she took her own life are both under police investigation for allegedly “coaching” him to give evidence.

Kiena Dawes, 23, had written a suicide note saying, “Ryan Wellings killed me”, before leaving their nine-month-old daughter with a friend and taking her own life on a railway line on July 22, 2022.

Wellings, 30, had denied manslaughter but became the first defendant to be tried before a jury accused of the unlawful killing of his partner after her suicide following domestic violence.

On Monday Wellings was found guilty of assault and prolonged domestic violence towards Ms Dawes, but cleared of her manslaughter.

I am so angry he wasn't convicted of manslaughter and now to hear this.

I appreciate at this stage the media may have got it wrong, but to think women would "coach" a male thug to help him escape justice is heart breaking.

RIP Kiena Dawes Flowers

I hope her daughter is with good people.

Unfortunately it's all to common for women to minimise and excuse the abuse of other women by "good men" who "just made a mistake", I've seen it myself from friends and family including my own mother who couldn't understand why I wanted to "ruin" my ex's life by having him jailed for breaking my arm, ribs, nose and cheekbone when he tried to kill me for leaving his abusive arse.
It's easier to blame the victims than accept that you were wrong about someone or that you raised an abuser. Also for many women like my mother who chose to stay with their abuser it can feel like a judgment on their choices when their children refuse to put up and shut up. DV is fucked up and causes so much intergenerational harm aa the cycle of abuse continues

It's shocking to contemplate just how many women are on the side of the patriarchy. Their internalised misogyny is writ large as they victim blame and "stand by their man".

So many mothers who believe they have bred the perfect man - they are so in love with their sons that they can do no wrong. Even when the evidence is right there in front of them.

Our police and justice system has no stomach for the reality of violence against women. Nor do women like this thug's mother and girlfriend.

We even have MPs currently sitting in the house of commons who have served jail time for violent assaults against women. I mean, what the fuck?

unfortunately she had tried to commit suicide before meeting him, hence a jury might see reasonable doubt about whether this abuse was the cause of her death. I hope he got he maximum possible sentence for the convictions he did get and that he is also prosecuted for perverting the cause of justice. The stupid current girlfriend really needs to wise up.

So sorry for those of you who have experienced male violence, and then to find that other women, even family put the man first and not you.

And sadly this happens to women who have been raped.

I haven't posted the link, but this total piece of scum actually posted a video on youtube showing him driving whilst drinking to celebrate the fact he wasn't going to be charged with manslaughter and calling Kiena Dawes all types of names.

In some strange way has the increased publicity around domestic violence now made some women think that in fact it is normal for women to be subjected to violence. ie it is normalised?

Let’s hope he doesn’t have access to his daughter but I don’t hold out hope @Hoardasurass sirfy to hear of your experience

It's safer to side with abusers at all levels from the low level of not wanting to face up to woman hatred and retain the false mental comfort of othering female victims (throwing them under the bus in the process) to actually trying to avoid being the next punchbag . At the end of the day, this is why women do this. Fucking enraging and depressing though.

I read an article about her the other day and it brought me to tears what she went through. Her poor baby left behind. She was let down by the system. Rest in peace Kiena. We need an uproar over abuse and it's disgusting how it's swept under the carpet. Thank you for your post and for bringing it to people's attention.
