Can we have a Julie Burchill appreciation thread?

For those who don't know, she's the author of "Sugar Rush" and has written many pro sex/ anti gender op-eds over the years.

She's just posted that she has an abscess on her spine. Flowers

I'm sending Julie warm wishes, in what must be a scary time.

She is the only reason I subscribed to the Spectator. Such a unique and electrifying writer. She makes me laugh and think. I hope she can write her way out of this discombobulating place she currently finds herself in.

As Julie is reading this I'm going to use this chance to thank her.

Julie, I've been reading your work since I was about 12, I thought 'The Boy Looked at Johnny' was the funniest thing ever when I read it, and I especially loved 'Married Alive', and your autobiography. Thank you so much for the laughs and insights you have given me - I particularly remember a column for The Guardian where you compared Brighton to a clitoris.

I almost approached you once to say thanks (well, to gush really) back when I lived in Brighton, but I was scared you might savage me then write a column about it. I wish I'd taken the opportunity now.

Thanks once again, I loved every word.

"She was sued by Ash Sarkar for libel"

Answer honestly: would you rather live in a world of Sarkars or Burchills?

JulieRaven · 14/01/2025 18:08

Thank you all so much! I love the discussions on here.

Ketzele · 14/01/2025 19:03

Best wishes to you, Julie. We met at a party in the olden days but you decided that accompanying Suzanne Moore to the toilet was a better option than my scintillating conversation. (That is my second best name-dropping party anecdote after the time Boy George got off with my boyfriend.)

scandista · 14/01/2025 19:10

Best to you Julie, I admire you for being completely fearless and true to yourself.

AzurePanda · 14/01/2025 19:15

@ExitViaGiftShop snap re the Spectator, adore her writing and always have

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 14/01/2025 19:21

All my very best wishes, Julie.

As a middle aged woman of a certain age, I find myself simultaneously appreciating the unique insights from your deftly crafted words and also laughing. Which frankly is a rarity, these days. Thank you so much. Keep on keeping on, absolutely love your writing.

Cocolapew · 14/01/2025 19:24

Best wishes to you Julie 💐

If you're looking for op-ed ideas Julie, I'd love to hear your commentary/ thoughts on Trump's inauguration/ the death of "woke" next Monday!

It's nice of you to come and say hello to us all, @JulieRaven you won't remember me but we met up on a GU talk meet and all went back to yours. You gave me a beautiful bottle of perfume because I liked the smell and gave things to others there as well because you're clearly a very generous person and much kinder than most people would ever guess. I'm sorry you're going through it but your piece was beautiful and summed up a lot of the things I was thinking last year when there were at least two separate occasions that I could/should have died. I annoyed myself some of the time because I was so fucking Pollyanna, but it got me through stuff and I'm pretty sure your way of looking at this totally shite thing that's happened to you will get you through it as well. I have no doubt you'll be less Pollyanna than I was and that's no bad thing. Seriously, way to bore yourself rigid. I hope you can walk again but if not may your wheelchair always be the most comfortable and your painkillers top rate.

ScribblingPixie · 14/01/2025 22:35

She's such a trooper. And her writing makes me laugh really loudly quite often. I absolutely wish her all the best.

MorrisZapp · 14/01/2025 22:40

I'm a Karen which I feel is Julie adjacent. Your words have reached so many women in so many wormholes, just when they most needed them. All the very best to you Julie xx

Startoftheyear2025 · 14/01/2025 22:44

I've always loved your writing. Koko.

VeryQuaintIrene · 14/01/2025 22:54

Julie Burchill's columns are the only reason I still subscribe to the Spectator and I wish her well - hopefully she will still be able to write stuff that cracks me up even as my Guardian reader side tries to disapprove.

JulieRaven · 15/01/2025 06:13

Wow, thank you all, I'm knocked out. I love Mumsnet and have been spying on you for years!

JulieRaven · 15/01/2025 06:18

She's the great campaigner and activist - I'M the great writer!

JulieRaven · 15/01/2025 06:26

I'd like to add that I WAS a bad mother and very selfish all my life. I DON'T think bad fathers get picked on in the same way - they're often romanticised - but I don't mind being criticised, so I'm not bothered by it and won't be sulking or challenging anyone who thinks that way. Fair enough!

Battytwatty · 15/01/2025 06:33

I was only thinking about Julie yesterday when listening to an old desert island discs - I remembered listening to Kirsty interview Julie. Julie was just so refreshingly honest. And I thought Kirsty was a rude twat!

DoNotAdjustYourSex · 15/01/2025 07:32

Hi Julie, admire you and a lot of your work, and took my daughter to see your play Making Marilyn last year, which we both loved.

I look forward to enjoying more of your writing in the years to come.

This about Julie Burchill?

yes, I know now!

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 15/01/2025 19:20

So sad to hear that. I've always loved her fearless writing. She has always been brave enough to write the truth when others were too scared.

Forcedtoresign · 15/01/2025 19:22

Not a fan after her comments on IVF!

Shortshriftandlethal · 15/01/2025 19:37

Dawninglory · 14/01/2025 12:15

I don't think motherhood is the only thing women are good for. But alot of Mums on this thread are talking about her as some kind of amazing woman to the cause of Womankind. Just saying that she's not in my opinion.

I don't think it is so much about being "an amazing woman" as much as being an interesting, challenging and unique human being.

Not a fan after her comments on IVF!

Ok but no ones asking you to declare yourself a fan. All these demands for purity!

Jeez.
