Can we have a Julie Burchill appreciation thread?

For those who don't know, she's the author of "Sugar Rush" and has written many pro sex/ anti gender op-eds over the years.

She's just posted that she has an abscess on her spine.

Sad to hear that. Julie writes articles which are both searing and darkly hilarious. I hope she gets the healthcare she needs.

Believe it's a spinal abscess, she is certainly saying she will not be walking again (there's a Facebook group set up for her)

I was so sorry to hear how ill she has been and moved by the article she wrote. I really like her, she is a very funny and honest woman.

That’s really sad- sending love and best wishes. Her columns have brought me such joy down the years - they are hilarious. No-one tells it like Julie.

I had my arse handed to me MN style when I said I loved Julie Burchill on here during the Ash whatsername row. I didn't care, loved her then, still love her now. As a young working-class Bristolian, 2 years her junior, I worshipped the ground she walked on in the NME gunslinger days. I followed her life and longed for the hedonistic, outrageous antics she always seemed to be up to. I loved that she sounded like me when no one else in the public eye did. My favourite line of hers is 'my body isn't a temple, it's an amusement arcade'. She's bloody brilliant and I hope she makes a spectacular recovery.

Sorry to hear this, and sending Julie all best wishes. I can just imagine the funny, sharp response she would make to an outpouring of sympathy and concern. She annoys a lot of people, but mostly they need annoying. Best of luck, Julie.

Quite a few have posted her articles on FWR, and yes some are quite toffy nosed about her, but generally (from memory) most comment about how they agree with many, if not every thing she says.

If you piece together what's been posted in the Julie in hospital group along with the i news article and her own page (which seems to be public), it looks as if she was taken to hospital with a spinal abscess, which was then removed under surgery. She was in intensive care for three weeks, and is now on a normal ward, where she is expected to remain for a few months. She has been told she probably won't walk again. Really terrible news, but at least she is writing again and her own posts show that she's her usual spiky self.

She's loved by many, by truthlovers and also by secret doubters of the woke religion.
Spirited and hilarious, wishing her well as she faces her ordeal.

As she accepts, regularly. Like her writing and beliefs and habits (etc) or don't, I think most people would accept she is as unflinching honest about herself as she is about everything else.

Sorry she is going through this. I wondered if there was something wrong as she normally puts out articles every week.

I've never heard of the lass but she sounds like a hero to many of you here, I shall educate myself about her work and of course wish her all the very best.
