Can we have a Julie Burchill appreciation thread?

For those who don't know, she's the author of "Sugar Rush" and has written many pro sex/ anti gender op-eds over the years.

She's just posted that she has an abscess on her spine. Flowers

This isn’t a bad place to start - it is a positive piece, but it does demonstrate why she isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

That isn't someone who has the same beliefs as me by anymeans but I'll still wish her well, but probably will not look into her further. I'm of Jewish heritage, my great grandmother was Jewish. I never met her but believe she was a fascinating woman. But I stand fully with Palestine.
But I do hope Julie makes a recovery 🙂

Papyrophile · 13/01/2025 20:51

Sending good wishes to Ms Burchill for the best possible recovery. She contradicted herself so often in print that it is difficult to know which version one might be sympathising with, but regardless, I wish her well. Clever, funny and sometimes brilliant.

She was a shit mother. Completely selfish in her "Youth"

Julie admits she made mistakes as a mother.

However, plenty of men are shit fathers, and it doesn't tend to get brought up when discussing said men's later misfortunes.

I'm not defending Julie, but at least she takes responsibility for her choices. She doesn't give it the whole "she didn't let us see the kids" rubbish. She's honest.

Yes I've been following this on Julie's page and group, it's very sad but she's not letting it stop her! She's been a hero of mine for 30 years, she's brilliant.

WhoPutTheBomp · 13/01/2025 21:03

Best wishes to Julie from me.

Oh dear - I wish I hadn't seen that.

What might have been a plausible way of thinking as a romantic adolescent certainly doesn't look rational in an older person.

But we all have our weaknesses.

In the links I posted up thread, I really enjoyed the ones on Brighton and Labour women.

But her strength is in not taking herself to seriously, and being able to see her mistakes, and admit them.

Unlike the other JB who relentlessly promotes herself in every article as infallible and somehow unique!

Julie Burchill is very much a paradox. I love so much of what she's done but some of her stuff, oh my days, I'd like to slap sense into her. Metaphorically, I'd never dream of laying a finger on her.

I spent time with her about twenty years ago and we argued about stuff to do with Iraq and blah and blah. But. I think that at heart she is a very kind person and she is unbelievably generous so despite not agreeing with her on some really important things and wishing that she could see grey areas a bit more clearly, I think she's a decent human being. Even if I didn't I wouldn't wish what she's going through on my worse enemy. I do hope she can walk again but love how she talks about all the joys she's had in her life and continues to have. Good on her. Good woman yourself, Julie.

Floisme · 13/01/2025 22:22

Oh Julie.
All my good wishes to her.

Didn't she get sued for Islamophobia and lose?

I will always remember her laughing at married women, telling us that our husbands preferred women who stayed "on the pill and off the rails" in the late 80s.

Legendary? Depends on your perspective.

I knew her son in his youth. And seeing as this is Mums Net. I had to say something, she is a good writer, maybe, but a terrible mother. And now I am a mum, I could never treat my DS that way. So I don't share the love for the woman.

DontStopMe · 14/01/2025 10:07

Best wishes to Julie. I first read her stuff way back in her NME days.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 14/01/2025 10:42

I’m really sorry to hear this about Julie. Been a huge fan of her straight-talking, non-pandering-to-anyone writing style for decades. She sees through all BS. ❤️ to Julie.

So? Many human beings perform badly in one aspect of a complex life. It does not make the person a failure. Unless, obviously, you think motherhood is the only thing women are good for.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 14/01/2025 11:04

Agree @battairzeedurgzome

I don't think motherhood is the only thing women are good for. But alot of Mums on this thread are talking about her as some kind of amazing woman to the cause of Womankind. Just saying that she's not in my opinion.

JulieRaven · 14/01/2025 12:40

Hello! Thank you so much. Looks like my dancing days are over! X

JulieRaven · 14/01/2025 12:40

Thank you!

ArabellaScott · 14/01/2025 13:42

I was reading you in NME, Julie, back in the day. Always loved how much you made me think.

Sending you all my best healing wishes.

duc748 · 14/01/2025 14:05

Weren't we all! So long ago!

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 14/01/2025 14:13

Oh I'm sorry to read this, it must be awful to be told you won't walk again.

I've long admired Julie's writing even though I don't always agree with her (I'm not sure she even agrees with herself all the time). I loved her book on Diana, old as it is. I'm really sorry about her son too, that was a tragedy. If you're reading Julie, I'm sending you good wishes and courage.
