Depressing indeed 😔

WhoPutTheBomp · 10/01/2025 22:13

Ruth Hunt to the fore, I see. Ugh.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 10/01/2025 23:41

This is a good article focussed on exploitation of women. Hopefully Janice will do more,.covering the wrongs of gifting or selling babies and the dangers (to babies and society generally) of diminishing the importance of motherhood and the mother/baby dyad.

Hoardasurass · 11/01/2025 00:21

Yet another Labour attack on women and our rights then I see

I hope so.

While I agree surrogacy is problematic for women, it's much more fundamentally a crime against children.

I think it's really worrying that isn't more obvious to people.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 11/01/2025 08:18

Yes, I find the fact that people can’t see that it’s a trade in humans puzzling. Just because they’re small humans it doesn’t really make a difference.

And of course paying women to undertake a risky activity will result in exploitation. How could it not?

Janice Turner nails it, as per

Agree. There seems to be a tacit assumption that it's fine to buy babies.

duc748 · 11/01/2025 11:45

Strange that the same liberals who worry about veal calves or if their coffee is ethically sourced see commercial surrogacy as the next progressive frontier.

Well, quite.

RoyalCorgi · 11/01/2025 12:06

Excellent piece as ever from Janice. Pleased she's highlighting the issue.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/01/2025 12:31

Another excellent article from Janice with the comments being well informed and as usual, adding information to the issue.
The Times coverage of surrogacy has until recently been very supportive (a number of journalists involved in purchasing babies) so it's good to see more balanced coverage.

WhoPutTheBomp · 10/01/2025 22:13

Ruth Hunt to the fore, I see. Ugh.

Hunt, based on the policies she’s supported, doesn’t seem to feel much commonality or empathy with other women.

HPFA · 11/01/2025 14:53

If anyone you know supports commercial surrogacy I suggest you also ask them if they're in favour of people being allowed to sell their own kidneys.

GC5 · 11/01/2025 15:32

Great article. Thanks for sharing, OP.

JANetChick · 11/01/2025 15:37

Janice nails it as per.

fabricstash · 12/01/2025 10:12

This looks like it will be an interesting series and covers amongst other topics the ethics of surrogacy or even discussing the principle of deliberately having a motherless baby, even though some mothers are not great and some fathers are great
