Now posting without the link. We should try to get this to 10,000 signatures.

I think Labour will change things for the better in that regard, for sure. Racism and Islamophobia in this country isn’t taken anywhere near serious enough, they should carry a tariff at minimum of at least 10 years but there’s no way we have enough prison spaces to lock up another 100,000 people. It’s going to be a tough proposition for this government to tackle so I hope they are up to the task.

Seriously? You'd lock people up for 10 years for doing what, exactly? Murder, violence, vicious attacks, sure. But you can't be suggesting 10 years in prison for verbal abuse or online ranting?

I found an archive version. https://archive.ph/JVlK3

Yeah I dunno what happened there. I read an archived version too, but when I pasted the address in, it was just the original link, for some reason.

I get the impression your estimate is off by a couple of 00's, you're probably looking at a minimum of 10,000,000 put in prison for 10 years. So you are hoping in vain because this government is 'not up to the task'.

You better buckle up because I fear you're in for a world of 'hurt', if you give other people's words so much power over you.

If you had any idea of the true insidiousness that comes with things like racism and Islamophobia, you’d be calling for longer sentences than that. At least with crimes like assault and murder, they happen once and can be over in seconds, with racism that is something that permeates society for even longer, and cuts deeply into communities. It’s time we take these matters seriously as a country, before it’s too late.

And, part of that, is surely that Government need to listen to the electorate, and to communities, and get on top of unfettered immigration.

You agree?

lcakethereforeIam · 12/01/2025 15:44

True dat! You can only murder someone once. Although implying that racism is only a problem in this country is a little racist. I'll hold off reporting it as a NCHI this time 👀

No I think they should just keep immigration to the Uk at a consistent rate. And, as time goes on, without a dominant culture imposing on everyone else, racism should fall by the wayside.

Yeah, that’s the answer.

Plus the implied assumption that you can only be assulted once. The poor sods who are assulted for a prolonged period of time or more than once, or that the poor sods that are assulted or tortured before being murdered don't really count because assults and murder 'can be over on seconds'.

Does this poster feel that <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/JVlK3/www.economist.com/obituary/2020/10/22/samuel-paty-was-killed-on-october-16th" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Samuel Paty had it easy becuse he was 'only' beheaded, where as the people who were offended by the cartoons that showed had it far worse?

What about if one is murdered, and then racially abused, post mortem.

Presumably the worse element of the two, is the latter?

Following the PP’s fuzzy logic.

I'm not condoning racism, Islamophobia or any kind of hate crime, but neither do I support locking people up for 10 years for something they've said. Should be even longer than that, you say? Unbelievable.

It's a Monty Python sketch set in a dungeon where the rack, hot irons or the breaking wheel is low level torture, but 'people say horrible things to you' is the worst of the worst.

Out of interest, is sexism - the direct physical and sexual abuse, the regular low level verbal or online abuse, the belittling stereotypes, the dismissive silencing and political marginalisation, that is faced by physically female people simply because of our sex - one of the "things like" racism and Islamaphobia?

@Seainasive

The petition states this: 'The term 'non-crime hate incident' describes an incident which involves an act by a person which is perceived by another person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards people with a particular characteristic, i.e. race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, transgender identity.'

So I'm not misunderstanding you, you want the freedom to be as racist/disablist/etc. as you like without any repercussions?

You are misunderstanding her, and probably deliberately so.
