Fantastic work by Sex Matters. This is the sort of thing they're really good at.

Hoardasurass · 07/01/2025 18:00

Oh dear it would seem that operation Let them Speak is working wonders.
Now all we need to do is get uk politicians to pay attention to the direction of movement

duc748 · 07/01/2025 18:03

Only 21% of Labour voters 'strongly support', though. Was hoping for a bit better than that.

ellenback21 · 07/01/2025 18:45

This is why I give Sex Matters financial support. I hope every politician and progressive liberal reads this survey and then makes a big effort to remember how a liberal democracy is supposed to work. You tried to impose these ideas in a #NoDebate darkness when you should have made your (frankly batshit) case in the open so we could have had a proper free-speech discussion.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 07/01/2025 18:54

Really good, but still worrying how many people think it is ok for men to be in women's spaces or who don't understand/are nervous about the question.

I suppose given the extreme bullying of younger people in Universities and others in the work place we shouldn't be surprised. Just look at the attempted intimidation of DEFRA civil servants in their SEEN network (see the DEFRA thread on here). #NODEBATE put a stranglehold on democratic debate and it's taking an age to remove the totalitarian bullies from their positions of power.

Thank heavens for Sex Matters.

DuesToTheDirt · 07/01/2025 19:56

I'm very surprised that the "should be allowed" figures are as high as they are. So 11% of those surveyed think it's ok for transwomen to take part in women's sport, and 27-33% think it's ok for them to use women's toilets, changing rooms and refuges.

User37482 · 07/01/2025 19:59

Thats heartening to see, I’m interested in why a significant minority of Reform voters would be strongly opposed to clarification though. That surprised me, thought they would be more in-line with conservative voters polling on that. I mean it’s not really significant just a bit surprising.

I said this before but I think people are losing patience with obfuscation from leaders. I wonder if we are about to experience a massive cultural shift.

Im heartened by the continuing downward trend.

You’re assuming that those respondents a) read and b) understood the (very clear) definitions given.
Years of experience teaching adults has shown me that lots of perfectly intelligent, sensible people have difficulties with this sort of thing, for what seems to be a range of reasons.
The terminology is easy for me to understand because I’ve already thought about it. This may not always be the case.

I would really like to see the data on this to compare properly. I was actually looking for an update for this data last week!! So I am glad to see we have something.

Just for comparison, I know that they have only provided the totals and no break downs but compared to May 2022 here is the following:

In the following questions a transgender woman is someone who was biologically male at birth, but now identifies as a woman. A transgender man is someone who was biologically female at birth, but now identifies as a man.

Do you think transgender women should or should not be allowed to…

Take part in women's sporting events? 2022 in brackets vs 2024
Should be allowed [16] 11% this is decrease by 5%
Should not be allowed [61] 74% this is increase by 13%
Don't know [22] 15%. this is decrease by 7%

Use women's changing rooms? 2022 in brackets vs 2024
Should be allowed [34] 27%. this is decrease by 7%
Should not be allowed [43] 56%. this is increase by 13%
Don't know [23] 17%. this is decrease by 6%

Use women's toilets? 2022 in brackets vs 2024
Should be allowed [38] 33%. this is decrease by 5%
Should not be allowed [41] 51%. this is increase by 10%
Don't know [21] 16%. this is decrease by 5%

Use women's refuges? 2022 in brackets vs 2024
Should be allowed [39] 31%. this is decrease by 8%
Should not be allowed [36] 47%. this is increase by 11%
Don't know [25] 22%. this is decrease by 3%

It looks to me that not only have some people who were positive are now saying 'no' but some of the 'don't knows' have become 'no thank yous'.

And the specific non surgical question:

Do you think a transgender woman who has not had gender reassignment surgery should or should not be allowed to...

Use women's changing rooms?
Should be allowed [25] 20%. this is decrease by 5%
Should not be allowed [48] 62%. this is increase by 14%
Don't know [27] 18%. this is decrease by 9%

Use women's toilets?
Should be allowed [29] 26%. this is decrease by 3%
Should not be allowed [46] 58%. this is increase by 12%
Don't know [25] 16%. this is decrease by 9%

This is a pretty significant swing

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/01/2025 21:19

Presumably YouGov will grudgingly put it up on their site eventually. I was looking for it too but couldn't find it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/01/2025 21:21

Brilliant that you've crunched all the numbers @Helleofabore Star

Helleofabore · 07/01/2025 21:23

Comparing 2018 answers too.

I love numbers ...

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 21:26

Thanks, Helle.

Like others, I'm surprised at how many are happy for men to use women's spaces, regardless of their penis operation status.

Helleofabore · 07/01/2025 21:31

And the specific non surgical question from 2020:

Do you think a transgender woman who has not had gender reassignment surgery should or should not be allowed to...

Use women's changing rooms? 2020 in italics, 2022 in [brackets] vs 2024

Should be allowed 26 [25] 20%. 2020 - 2024 this is decrease by 6%

Should not be allowed 41 [46] 58%. 2020 - 2024 this is increase by 17%
Don't know 27 [25] 16%. 2020 - 2024 this is decrease by 11%

Operation : Let them speak has done wonders.

I was looking a week or so ago and there was nothing. I guess they are doing the final checks before publishing.

It is a very definitive swing since 2018.

ellenback21 · 07/01/2025 21:38

NET scores are calculated by subtracting % disagree from % agree. All scores are resoundingly negative now. Negative scores mean more people disagreeing than agreeing that transgender women should have access

2024 (with 2022 in brackets):

sport: -63 (-45)
changing rooms : -29 (-9)
toilets : -18 (-2)
refuges : -16 (+2)

without surgery:
changing rooms: -42 (-24)
toilets: -32 (-17)

I'm pleasantly surprised by the Lab and Lib Dem data. For Labour, overall 48% tend to be in favour of clarifying that sex in the EQ Act means biological sex with 26% tending to oppose. For the Lib Dems it is 46% vs 26%

Wish they had done the Green Party too😁

Helleofabore · 07/01/2025 21:55

ArabellaScott · 07/01/2025 21:42

2018 was peak batshit.

Good to know.

I suspect so much has been publicised since then. Plus we have had Thomas / Hubbard and then Bryant and others and Wadhwa.

And the schools guidance and toilets and the Cass Report… and quite a lot else.

#NoDebate really working out well isn't it.
