Secret signals

I bought a mug a few years ago which I like to think is simultaneously entirely innocent and also a bit of a signal to those ‘in the know’ that they are not alone.

it’s a mug in green and white and purple (scandalous)

I’d quite like to add to my collection of ‘secret signals’ but not quite brave enough to get the scarf.

Any suggestions?

I have a dinosaur pin and HP top.
i was going to buy a suffragette lanyard but then realised that the colours have also been stolen by the genderqueer flag 🤬

I was super happy to find out at our Xmas do a few weeks ago that two colleagues are GC. I had absolutely no idea.

BathTangle · 29/12/2024 20:04

I have a pair of Dinny Hall earrings in suffragette colours, where the profits from the sales go to Women's Aid. Feels like a pretty act of rebellion!

Commonly known on MN FWR as Operation Let Them Speak.

That's all very well, if it means TRAs exposing themselves, but what happens to the person suddenly the subject of their ire and potentially having to deal with their captured organisation HR department?

They're not going to believe 'I just like dinosaurs' if it's then possible for screenshots of FWR discussing the secret symbols to be presented in a disciplinary - if they've been employed for over two years, before that they could just be terminated without ever knowing why.

Dinosaurs are popular They'd have to show that only TERFs like them - which is plainly nonsense. And if they then use it as reason for dismissal they're bang to rights for discrimination.

I also wear my woman adult human female sweatshirt all the time on Zoom work meetings (work from home full time) - particularly if the other person (s) have pronouns after their name .

I'm enjoying the thought of A&E visits for aneurysms after your meetings!

Oh I so want to go to that MC battle!!

teentantrums · 30/12/2024 09:00

@IamAporcupine I wouldn't worry about that. Everyone recognises them as suffragette colours whereas ime they have so many different flags they can't keep track!

Wow, overreact much, a person who like dino's enough to put one on their desk will be able to convince even the most dim witted HR officer that they genuinely like dino's because they will be able to reel off a long list of dino specie's eg T Rex, Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus. They might even be able to show them a picture of a wall clock they brought from the Natural History Museum. 😁🦖

RoyalCorgi · 30/12/2024 10:46

What we're talking about here is what the TRAs term "dog-whistles", right?

The one problem with dog whistles is that if everyone can hear them, they're not really a dog whistle. And if no one can hear them, they're pointless. How you reach a stage where the dog whistle is only identifiable to people on the same team, but not anyone else, is a conundrum it's probably beyond me to solve.

RunoroundTheChristmasTree · 30/12/2024 11:05

I think it’s not so much about non-terfs not being able to recognise the signs, as plausible deniability if the shit hits the fan!

RunoroundTheChristmasTree · 30/12/2024 11:06

Definitely going to get some dinosaur jewellery in 2025 - links appreciated 😁

Other dinosaurs had vocal structures that are similar to those found in modern birds. The Vegavis, a bird-like dinosaur, had a vocal organ known as a syrinx that is responsible for bird songs and calls. This suggests that the Vegavis may have made sounds that were similar to those made by modern birds.

I’m a child of the 70s, I can’t get my head around feathered, colourful, whistling dinosaurs. Or that brontosaurus isn’t a name we use any more 😭😭

On the other hand, I love dinosaurs and I love Terfing so I see some little pins and badges in my future to add to my key ring and mug.

AstonsGerbil · 31/12/2024 11:52

Can anyone remember the name of the artist that made jewellery in shape of fallopian tubes? Sounds odd but it was beautifully made. She wrote a blog post over the rainbow (I think, not 💯 sure). I think I will save and get something like that for myself. If I can find her website again!

Have you heard of the Forstater judgment that declared GC views to be worthy of respect in a democratic society? That's why. You can't fire someone because they hold GC views/ beliefs. And if you say that they can't display any indication of their beliefs then every cross and other religious symbol and every flag would also have to go.

Edited

Yes, I've heard of them. I'm also aware of employment law.

But that's the point - I have, but that doesn't mean somebody else has, so could be singled out by a particularly militant individual as committing literal violence against them for having a Harry Potter keyring, a couple of plastic dinosaurs or wearing a purple dress and a green jumper.

And in a captured organisation, HR might be 'smart' enough to realise that sacking a middleaged woman for being a Terf could potentially cause them issues, but deciding not to make her contract permanent or 'The needs of the organisation have changed and your role is no longer required' would be a way to get rid of an entirely innocent party without ever mentioning that it's actually due to a TRA spotting something on Mumsnet that's described as a Secret Signal on her desk or person.

I’m due a few treats. I don’t really have anywhere to wear them, but I do like knowing I have them.

That was Jess De Wahl, @AstonsGerbil . I've got one of those lovely little items, it's currently gracing my favourite jacket along with one of her 'Heretic' embroidered patches. She is primarily a textile artist, and you might remember her as the woman whose work was removed (temporarily, she sued and won - yay!) from the V and A shop on account of her horrifying GC views. I absolutely love her stuff.

Beaten to it, but Jess de Wahl. I bought my daughter a patch to sew and Jess included a postcard in the box - both my wife and daughter thought it was a sheep!

I have one of Jess De Wahl’s little uterus & fallopian tubes badges and it’s so cute (and well made).

If I buy all the Terfy pins and badges that I like then I may as well give in and buy a black bomber jacket to go full throttle into reliving the fashion of the 80s (for covering bomber jackets in badges). It would be very retro at my age lol

I take your point that most people might not want to risk it, but it's still covered under the Equality Act in the same way other protected characteristics are. It's possible to "not extend contracts" because of other PCs too. And it's exactly what happened to Maya.
