Secret signals

I bought a mug a few years ago which I like to think is simultaneously entirely innocent and also a bit of a signal to those ‘in the know’ that they are not alone.

it’s a mug in green and white and purple (scandalous)

I’d quite like to add to my collection of ‘secret signals’ but not quite brave enough to get the scarf.

Any suggestions?

Please be as specific or nebulous as you like with an understanding that not all those who read this thread are friendly forces.

I find your post a bit unclear.
What do you mean by "those in the know"? Women's rights supporters? T*rfs?
Why the need to be secret? Do you mean at work?

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 29/12/2024 12:51

I have a dinosaur necklace and dinosaur studs. I have a beaded bracelet in suffragette colours.

One of my DS1's teachers wears suffragette colours alot. When she wore a dinosaur scarf once DS asked her if she was a terfosaurus, because his mum is. Apparently she roared with laughter and nodded.

I've not met her yet. But I think she's marvellous.

Love that! 😂

I think a little dinosaur somewhere - a keyring, perhaps? - would be a good addition to the green/white/purple mug.

'To display one such symbol may be regarded as accidental, to display two looks like terfiness' as Oscar Wilde never said - his niece Dolly Wilde might well have said it, though, if she was around now and not in 1920s Paris.

It's daft that in nearly-2025 we need 'secret signals' but in some work situations, they are needed. God it sounds like the old days when lesbians were looking out for secret signals because they'd be outed and suffer the consequences if they made the wrong assumption about another woman. One step forward, two steps back, eh?😕

But back to the topic of dinosaurs, mugs, nods and becks and wreathed smiles - hope you find another terf or two in your surroundings😉

I assume an I♥️JKR mug isn't secret enough 😁 I did get a dinosaur Christmas bauble this year. Not sure anyone I know understands secret messages though.

Nods to Harry Potter work. Lots of kids and adults still like HP or have HP souvenirs from when they were younger. Was genuinely relieved when a group of staff at DC's school did HP for a dress up day. They may do some batty woke stuff at least on paper but that shows they're not activists and it's probably naivety not malice.

"When she wore a dinosaur scarf once DS asked her if she was a terfosaurus" 😂

I'm pinching that, even my tinsel had dino's on this Christmas. 🦖

At work

A lot of us work in ‘captured organisations’ but a little bit of gentle solidarity can inspire confidence and small little acts of rebellion.

Dinosaurs, brilliant!

There is a MNetter who is called Terfosauraus. I really loved her user name and said that is what I am.

Fatface last year at least had gorgeous little felt and beaded dino tree decorations. I bought loads in the Jan sales and distributed them widely.

I work in local government where it is not acceptable to raise any concerns or questions about gender ID.

I was in a meeting once with a colleague I barely knew, and realised she had Suffragette colours pinned to her work bag. I took a risk and asked her if she was GC. She then introduced me to other colleagues who were also GC.

I've now got a Suffragette badge pinned to my laptop bag.

Talkinpeace · 29/12/2024 15:17

A small suffragette flag should be allowable anywhere.
I saw one on a Uni branded progress pride lanyard.

The phrase "hoarding rights" often works as a door opener

Francesgumm · 29/12/2024 15:20

I wear suffragette colour scarf and gloves - all the time out and about.
I also wear my woman adult human female sweatshirt all the time on Zoom work meetings (work from home full time) - particularly if the other person (s) have pronouns after their name .
I also have a bright orange Female sweatshirt so it’s either one or the other . I’m a few years off retirement and don’t care if I ruffle feathers - I think at least if there is a GC woman in work they can see that I’ll be of the same viewpoint - occasionally I do get the odd comment or nod of recognition .

I comment on how much I am looking forward to the next Cormoran Strike book.

hesitsupallday · 29/12/2024 15:24

This is a bit subtle, but every time I wear it, I feel I'm doing my bit......

I haven't quite dared to wear my SEEN lanyard yet, but I wear a beautiful beaded one in suffragette colours ☺️

NoBinturongsHereMate · 29/12/2024 17:11

I have a selection of enamel pins in suffragette colours with suffragette quotes on.

ArabellaScott · 29/12/2024 17:14

I find identifying myself as a feminist is usually enough.

Swamphag · 29/12/2024 17:18

I have a "Deeds not Words" tattoo

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/12/2024 17:18

Might be a bit shit for other employees that just happen to like dinosaurs/wear green or purple dresses if the TRAs in the workplace round on them for 'displaying secret symbols of Terfdom'.

JellySaurus · 29/12/2024 17:19

I've been looking at these. Forgot to put them on my list, and can't really justify buying them so soon after Christmas. Next birthday...

People look twice when you wear mismatched earrings, sometimes they ask about them...oh, they're suffragette colours...conversation develops.
