Fantastic.

Yes. This seems very fair to me.

Excellent news - but how the hell did we get to this point that this is even necessary?

I know. If you'd told me 10 yrs ago that we even needed to debate this, I wouldn't have believed you.

This.

Snowypeaks · 12/12/2024 22:32

It's not fair.
Males who haven't gone through puberty for whatever reason nevertheless have an advantage over women and girls. It's an irrational rule and while it may reduce the number of males, it still brings male advantage into the category created to exclude it.

Not a great deal to celebrate here.

Snowypeaks · 12/12/2024 22:37

And it only applies to elite level golf. Joke of a policy. A compromise which is almost as unfair as the original free for all.

I'm not sure this is correct. Isn't puberty when testosterone kicks in and the advantages appear? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right, but I suspect that this will stop men entering the women's game. I can't recall seeing any men who haven't been through male puberty trying to enter women's sport.

I admit that I missed the fact that it only applied to elite golf, so the AGPs will still try to interfere with women's golf...but perhaps the lack of cash prizes will dissuade most.

Puberty supercharges the male physiology but the male athletic performance advantage exists from birth, it's just less dramatic. Prepubescent boys significantly outperform girls across a range of performance indicators like jumping, leaping, speed etc, with the exception of balance and flexibility, which girls are better at.
Males with a DSD which prevents them from benefiting from puberty, or boys who have had puberty blockers look more like women. But they are all male and dominate sports they are in.

There are puberty-blocked athletes outperforming girls in American middle schools.
They have the added incentive of college scholarships, I suppose.

Snowypeaks · 12/12/2024 23:00

The injustice will be as great, but less obvious because the males will be more feminine looking and not as dramatically advantaged as males who have gone through puberty.
So much harder to fight against.
This is the practical side of it, but I am also angry that the principle of the category is not thought to be worth upholding, that the degree of unfairness doesn't matter because it is only women's golf - not proper golf like men play.

SidhuVicious · 12/12/2024 23:09

I think boys have more testosterone high points than puberty; one when they are very young and another at around four? (Though my memory may be wrong)
This statement about 'undergoing puberty' (as if it's a medical surgical procedure) is cult speech.

stanleypops66 · 12/12/2024 23:26

Excellent news we just need all other sports, regardless of level to follow suit.

Snowypeaks · 12/12/2024 23:29

What we need is for all sports to respect and protect the female category.

Edited

I didn't realise that. (I knew about males competing against girls, but didn't realise that some had been on puberty blockers.) I stand corrected.
