Are they trying to say there wasn't a problem with the census?

Yes the inference is that it is the lack of skills in English that caused the issue. Not their nonsense question.

But the whole point of these major national surveys is that they should be accessible to the 8 year old translating for her mum 🤦‍♀️

This, and also any number of people who dont bother with the media, main stream or otherwise, and have not really have any notion of the word gender and why it is even appearing on a census.

I cant remember what the figure is but a very large % of the country just doesn't bother with "news".
